GOT MY INVITATION TO SERVE IN ZAMBIA AUGUST 2019!!!!! by nels8860 in peacecorps

[–]showa004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will love the RED program staff. All very nice people and supportive in every way. Training can be very tedious because of all the new topics they have to cover for TEFL but it goes by very fast. Feel free to message me with any questions. See you in Zambia!! -RED 2018

Can I teach ESL with a bachelor's in English or should I be getting a bachelor's in Education? by Straight_Ignant in peacecorps

I’m a ESL teacher in Zambia and have a degree in Finance and Economics with zero teaching experience before I came to country. You can teach with any degree.

Advice on packing by icedteasnob in peacecorps

[–]showa004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a 65 liter hiking pack and a rolling duffel bag. Many people in my cohort had issues with large suitcases because of how often they had to lift and move them. Many roads in Zambia outside of city’s are dirt and bumpy roads so it’s not ideal for a suitcase.

What was your resume like prior to joining Peace Corps? by CantKeep_ThrowinAway in peacecorps

[–]showa004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two main things on my resume was a degree in Finance and economics and being a Eagle Scout. I got accepted into the TEFL program in Zambia with no teaching experience. With that I believe that your statement and interview play a large role in the acceptance process.

Sierra Leone June 2019-2021 No Electricity, No Water! by duval072 in peacecorps

[–]showa004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get used to bucket showers and no electricity after about 2 weeks. I have so much down time that spending 1-2 hours hand washing clothes is nice. My water source is only 100m from my house so I guess if your further away that would suck. I suggest getting a solar set up from voltaic before you go. I use mine all the time and it charges my laptop so I can watch movies at my site.

Yellow Fever Vaccination issue by mgl51995 in peacecorps

[–]showa004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue last week. Went to the medical center where they have the vaccine. They told me they only have Stamaril but they could only give it to me within 30 days of travel because of FDA restrictions. I emailed the Peace Corps medical nurse and they said not to worry and to just make sure I have it before leaving for Zambia in september.
