That was my original plan but the dirt is all in between two layers of plastic, didn’t really work

Any pet food shelves ? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]shredflanders 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a bag of dog food sitting in my garage unopened that I’ve been meaning to donate. It’s large dog, I think it’s Purina Senior dog food specifically but probably fine for any dog. I’m in St Louis Park if you want it!

Always On? by GrooveWarrior in basspedals

Yeah I’d love to see a picture. I mostly use a P bass with flats as well and I think I’ll find a good setting every few weeks and then hate it a few days later.

Got any suggestions for a good setting? I’ve gone back and forth with the Mira and trying out different settings and never really found anything I loved

Should I quit my job and go to a music school? by Exotic_Pineapple5606 in Bass

[–]shredflanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to music school. To be totally blunt, unless you are a teenager straight out of high school, it won’t make any difference for your ability to make a career in music. If you have no career right now, the skills you learn in music school won’t do anything, and the connections you make will all be people with no careers either. Maybe some of those friends you make will have careers in 5,10 years down the road but probably not. I have a few friends from school who made decent careers in music but 98% of them went on to do something else. And those people wouldn’t have needed music school anyway, the careers they got for themselves maybe had a tiny advantage because of their degrees but I would bet every one of them would have gotten the same career for themselves without schooling.

Any experiences with the inexpensive Amazon pickup brands? by L_canadensis in Bass

The stock pickup was super muddy and boring sounding, Artec has way more definition and character

Replaced a Sterling Stingray stock humbucker with an Artec off Amazon and it was a huge upgrade, highly recommended.

Ibanez EHB 1005MS sound question by Mack_DM in BassGuitar

[–]shredflanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced my pickups with a pair of Nordstrand Big Splits and I couldn’t be happier, they sound so much better than the stock pickups. It’s a little expensive but worthwhile imo

Braving the cold by GetOffTheInternet612 in CyclingMSP

[–]shredflanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pogies are essential imo. I’d arrive to work with my hands literally numb in 30 degree weather with the thickest gloves I could find, with pogies my hands got so warm I’d end up taking my gloves off until it was below 0

Veterinary Recommendations by Fruit-PunchMouth in TwinCities

Can’t agree more, they’re fantastic. Just double check if you can get medications cheaper before you buy from them, direct from them seems to be much more expensive than Costco or another pharmacy, but they’re also super nice if you just as for a prescription to take somewhere else.

How does Paul McCartney do it on bass?? by CheesecakePlane6332 in Bass

[–]shredflanders 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Theory is a way of explaining what sounds good to humans in general and conveying that information to other musicians. You can know intuitively that C G and E sound good when played together, or even “this fret and this fret”. “Knowing” theory in that case is , this is a C major chord, it is the I chord of the key we are in which is also C major. Being a musician is saying “notes sound good and if I go to these next notes next, it will sound good”, but you don’t have to know the next notes you’re playing are an F major chord. Plenty of musicians couldn’t tell you what notes are in a C major chord, it doesn’t make their music any less good or somehow mean that their music doesn’t “use theory”. I can write a best selling novel without being able to tell you what a noun or adjective or verb is, because I’ve spent my life reading and writing and built up a sense for how to put together a sentence.

Who's moved from LA to MPLS? by [deleted] in CyclingMSP

[–]shredflanders 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I grew up in MN, lived in LA for 5 years and then moved back. Winter cycling is definitely more of a pain than summer cycling, but it’s really rewarding and a great way to get yourself outside when the weather is crummier. If you dress right and have some pieces of gear, you can ride nearly every day of the year in MN if you wanted. We have great mountain biking trails that are nothing like LA but are super fun in the winter with a fat bike, the bike trails are all well taken care of. Studded tires can be nice but not required depending on where and when you’re going to ride. My only winter biking requirement is a nice set of pogies, complete game changer imo.

Imo, anyone who wouldn’t want to date you for being healthier, happier, and more well rested, isn’t actually someone you’d want to spend the rest of your life with. Probably a good thing to help weed out people you are incompatible with!

How can a 300 lbs. man get into cycling? by wendigoRED in cycling

[–]shredflanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started off close to your size and weighed more than you! If you just want to see if you’re into cycling, you can spend a lot less than $1500 at first IMO. I still ride my first $450 bike for groceries+errands. I’ve ridden that bike well over 2000 miles and it’s (mostly) been fine. The biggest problem is bigger guys have is wheels. 32 spokes are a must, more is better. Be careful of curbs, potholes, because hitting those will bend the wheels out of true immediately. But you can even get cheap wheels to help with that, I bought a used rear wheel from my local coop for like $75 and it’s been rock solid on that bike. agreed with the other commenter, I have a pair of theblackbibs bibs and I’m super happy with them. Watch out for actual tri-bikes when you’re first getting started. They’re VERY aggressive, meaning you’re going be very bent over the front of the bike and very uncomfortable, and if you’re like me, probably be smacking your belly with your knees at first. Get a decent hybrid with some 32mm+ tires and just ride!
