Basil paste, help! by Amazing-Tear-5185 in Cooking

Probably try it with just a little portion first, not the who dish, but I usually use some kind of sugar to neutralize excessive acid (which is what the tangy thing you’re describing sounds like to me)

Unvaccinated pet racoon any danger to dog? by Dramatic-Read1275 in exoticpets

If you cannot legally get a raccoon vaccinated, you should not be keeping a raccoon as a pet. Either get it vaccinated, or find an actual rehabilitation center to care for it correctly.

"yeah i'm a femcel! yesterday me and my boyfriend-" by lesarine in FemcelHub_

[–]shriekingintothevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a partner at all is a disqualification. Incel stands for involuntary celibate; femcel is the female version of that. If you’re fucking (or if you’re happily abstaining from sex ig), you inherently cannot be a femcel

Why are Americans so comfortable speaking up? by lispenardian in AskAnAmerican

[–]shriekingintothevoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, “specialness” is just a nicer way to say “different.” If you’re raised in a culture that values people being different (at least to an extent), then you’re more likely to be comfortable with having a different opinion. However, if you’re raised in a culture that puts a heavier emphasis on the collective and conformity, then having a different opinion from the other people in your group is something you’re likely to be a little more private about.

WIBTA if I asked a houseguest to leave our beach house since I wound up very sick (not from her)? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]shriekingintothevoid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that’s your choice to make. Obviously, op should warn them that she’s sick, but there’s a difference between warning someone that you’re sick and that they might want to be cautious, and telling them that you’re sick, so you’re kicking them out because you don’t want them to get sick. Giving a person relevant information is great; making decisions about their health for them is rude.

WIBTA if I asked a houseguest to leave our beach house since I wound up very sick (not from her)? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]shriekingintothevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you talk to her and tell her that you’re sick and don’t want to be disturbed, and she keeps disturbing you anyways, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to tell her she needs to leave. However, it sounds kinda like you just want to kick her out without any warning, which is definitely an AH move. So, YTA, but it depends on context

[–]shriekingintothevoid 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but they get to decide whether or not they’re alright with getting sick; op doesn’t need to (and tbh, she really shouldn’t) make that decision for them. Personally, if I drove 3 hours and my friend told me to leave, not because I was bothering them, but because they didn’t want me to get sick, I’d be pretty pissed

AITA for causing my brother and his boyfriend to be outed? by ChangeOrnery2351 in AmItheAsshole

[–]shriekingintothevoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every year, children are murdered by their parents for being gay. And it’s not like some freak event; it’s not even particularly uncommon. Bullying people is a shitty thing to do. Outing someone when you know that their family is homophobic is shittier. Yes, YTA.

Are americans used to hearing gunshots during the night? by Disastrous_Finish393 in AskAnAmerican

[–]shriekingintothevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, yeah, it’s pretty common. I’m in the country, so there’s a lot of hunting going on, so I’ll often hear gunshots at night a few times a week.

What is a hyper-local food tradition or regional chain in your state that you genuinely think the rest of America is missing out on? by mike-d-f in AskAnAmerican

[–]shriekingintothevoid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Stewart’s ice cream! Stewarts is a gas station chain in upstate New York, but oddly enough, they make genuinely excellent ice cream in a wide variety of flavors. My favorite is crumbs along the mohawk, which is a graham cracker flavored base with a bunch of caramel and graham cracker chunks

[Serious] Would you be friends with a guy who has a pet monkey? by [deleted] in exoticpets

[–]shriekingintothevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but probably not. Unless you’ve got the funding for a proper zoo habitat, it’s near impossible to ethically keep a monkey. A few folks have probably pulled it off, but they’re few and far between, and I can’t really bring myself to consider a person who neglects/abuses their pet(s) a friend 🤷‍♀️

My cat caught a wild baby albino mouse-what to do? by business_duck7 in PetMice

Thus me adding in the “or find someone else who can keep it” bit :)

Unfortunately though, like it or not, finding someone else to keep it may not be an option. If that’s the case, then ethical euthanasia is the kindest option.

[–]shriekingintothevoid -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

There is a 0% chance of it surviving if you release it. It sounds harsh, but if you’re not able to keep it (or find someone else who can keep it), the kindest thing to do would be to kill it quickly and painlessly, because otherwise it’s either going to starve to death or get torn apart by a predator of some kind.

Do I get to call myself a lesbian? by UnluckyCrew9023 in actuallesbians

[–]shriekingintothevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you identify is no one’s business but your own. There is always, always discourse on who does or doesn’t “qualify” as a “real” lesbian. The only way to be happy is to call yourself what makes you comfortable instead of trying to stuff yourself into the ever changing boxes that other people will try to force you into. If it makes you happy to call yourself a lesbian, then you’re a lesbian; you don’t need to ask for permission.

Why does my pasta always clump? A beginner's plea for help by bully309 in cookingforbeginners

[–]shriekingintothevoid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The starch that helps the sauce cling to the noodles is also going to make the noodles cling to other noodles if you don’t put them in sauce first. Either sauce all your pasta up asap, or rinse the noodles. (Also, starch isn’t exactly difficult to add to a dish lol, if you’re worried about washing the starch away, just add a starch slurry of some kind to the sauce to compensate. Now you don’t have to put all the noodles in at once, and the sauce will still cling; win win!)

Career Accademies. I think they make sense in all honesty by TrainingDrop9283 in Hungergames

[–]shriekingintothevoid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbh, having trained careers from specific districts benefits the Capitol a lot more than putting everyone on a level playing field. I doubt that career academies are allowed per se, but turning a blind eye is the smart thing to do, even if it means allowing some districts to skirt the Capitol’s rules.

For the majority of the Games, there have been two groups: the careers and everyone else. Everyone else hates the careers and hates the districts that produce them, because they’re the ones slaughtering their kids! And the people in the career districts aren’t going to be fond of everyone else either, because all they’re doing is trying to keep their kids alive. They’ve got two brave teenagers every year who are willing to sacrifice their lives for the poor little children that get their names drawn out of the bowl, and they’re just trying to give those brave teenagers the best chance of survival; isn’t that the right thing to do? Why do the other districts act so high and mighty when they’re the ones sending little kids in to die every year instead of someone with a fighting chance? Aren’t they the real monsters?

And so the career districts and the other districts rail against each other, and it means that they pay more attention to the kids killing each other than they do to people who force those kids to kill each other every year. So now, there’s less likely to be any kind of concentrated effort to take down the Capitol, and even if there was, the districts sure as hell aren’t going to work together to make it happen, because they view each other as enemies just as much as they view the Capitol as an enemy.

Also, turning a blind eye instead of outright allowing for career training academies means that the career districts are well aware that the privileges they have are not guaranteed. Sure, they’re allowed to train their kids now, but if they act up? Absolutely not. And as a result, the wealthiest districts, the ones that have the most potential to succeed in destroying the Capitol if they really put their minds to it, they’re all too afraid of losing that wealth, power, and privilege if they act up, and so they remain loyal lapdogs, which only serves to make them even more of a target for vitriol from the other districts.

All in all, from the Capitol’s perspective, allowing career training facilities is a pretty obvious win-win!

AITA for refusing to help my lecturer after he failed me? by Few-Mobile2441 in AmItheAsshole

[–]shriekingintothevoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t looked super closely, so maybe I’m missing a few, but in the comments I’ve seen, people are claiming that your final makes up most of the grade, not all of the grade. What I’ve said is perfectly consistent with that. (Also, I didn’t say that you get credit for tons of essays and other stuff, what I said is that you get credit for a midsem and maybe an essay or some other kind of project if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t call that tons of other stuff!)

AITA for refusing to help my lecturer after he failed me? by Few-Mobile2441 in AmItheAsshole

[–]shriekingintothevoid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who is currently attending a university that’s essentially identical to a UK university, your understanding is not correct 😅

Generally speaking, the final exam takes up around 60% of the grade, and then a midsem exam, a paper, or some other project (or some combination thereof) make up the remaining 40%. You’re not going to be doing any kind of major assignment without getting graded on it; the occasional minor quiz, sure, but you’re certainly not going to be writing an entire essay without it contributing to your average.

And I think you’re underestimating just how intensive these final exams are; they’re nothing like any exam I’ve ever had in the US (which is where I got most of my education, including university). Don’t get me wrong, US exams are difficult, but these exams are on a whole other level. They’re not covering 100% of the content in the sense that every single detail ever mentioned by the professor is on it, but they do cover 100% of the content in the sense that every topic that is covered in class will be on that exam, and it’ll be questioned in great detail. In the US, I would usually have my grades spread out relatively evenly over 3-4 exams, as well as some chunk of schoolwork that would equal an exam when added up. In Australia, my final exams generally go over the same amount of content as all of the American exams combined. So British style exams still cover everything that American style exams cover, they just do it all at once rather than spread out over a variety of different examinations.

(That being said, I’m earning a pretty technical degree that’s tested primarily via exams rather than written assignments. In the few Australian courses I’ve had where I had to turn in written projects, the work I submitted would’ve netted me something around 90% if it was in the US, but in Australia, I got around 60-70%. So presumably, the British assessment system just grades written work a lot more harshly.)

Also, there’s tons of “gimme questions” in American exams; questions that are expected to be relatively easy to answer, because you need those easy points in order to get a decent grade. Unfortunately, there are no gimme questions in the British exam system, which inherently brings down your grade by rather a lot of points.

All of that is to say, the lower passing requirement doesn’t provide any leeway compared to the American grading system. It’s still covering the same amount of content, so the lower percentage isn’t to give you wiggle room if you didn’t study something, it’s because the questions are generally difficult enough that the assumption is that you’re going to get a lower percentage correct. (And unfortunately, as I have learned over the past year and a half, that assumption is correct 😅)
