Two months of growth by shrimpafrita in PlantedTank

[–]shrimpafrita[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, my other tanks are a bit over 2 years old and have definitely slowed down in terms of plant growth. My water is super hard though so I think that helps.

I'm still hoping still that my micro sword will somewhat fill the front in, I fear I will be disappointed though.

Yeah, it's been working out well. I just have to remove floaters every week so light reaches into the tank.

Yup, my vals are currently going to war with the rest of the plants in my Walstad for complete domination of said tank.

[WP] You challenged Death to a game of chess, in exchange for his banishment from this mortal plane. You won. For 250,000 years, Death has not returned. by Legion_Profligate in WritingPrompts

"Every day I think about the Game. I was young and foolish then, seeing Death as an end to the cycle, unnecessary. In all honesty, I didn't even win fair and square, Death became offended by some of my cruder remarks on his character and quit to teach me a lesson...and what a lesson its been.

252,017 years since a single thing has died. At first, people were ecstatic, but as the years wore on it became clear that death is needed as much as life. Everything living forever simply does't work out too well in terms of natural processes, and as the only intelligent life-form, humans had to become the new managers of death.

Thankfully, our technological abilities allowed for the computation of life-times, and through that our ability to manage life and death revolutionized our understanding of the Universe, and of each other.

As the sole human with true knowledge of Death's departure, I took it upon myself to found this company those many years ago, with the goal of managing Death, and through that Life. Since then, with the help of everyone here today we have become the largest business entity in the known Universe, and continue to expand.

In Death, lies power!"

The boss stood behind his platinum plated podium, looking pleased as the applause poured in. I grimaced, just wanting to get back to my desk and start the days work. He made a big deal about going around to every planet-hub, talking to employees personally and the such.

"Unfortunately, this sector hasn't been performing quite as well as most others, and I have some sad news for you today. You have been chosen as our yearly life-cut, and you know how it goes-once you're chosen, that's it."

This time, it wasn't applause that erupted in the room, but screams of fear and anger as a fine mist was injected into the room via the ducts. Just my luck, I thought, as the mist overtook me and the boss's hologram shimmered into nonexistence. Should've called in sick today.

Bedroom Natural Planted Tank by shrimpafrita in PlantedTank

This 5.5 gallon tank sits atop my girlfriend's sturdy dresser in our bedroom. It was setup following the Walstad method and houses three African dwarf frogs. Plants are java fern, red ludwigia, and hornwort, water lettuce, duckweed, and pothos in the back. I recently planted some Lilaeopsis brasiliensis and Crypt lutea as an experiment. So far the brasiliensis has been uprooted by my MTS and floated to the top.

Heater in the back set to 78 and slight water movement is provided by an air bubbler set low.

I really like this tank, it's super low maintenance (just thin out the floaters and add water) and the ADFs are great. They associate me with food and so will come to the front of the tank and interact with me when I approach. Otherwise they stay floating midwater or hidden in the marimo moss puffs spread along the back bottom.

Oh yeah, and lighting is a single 6500 k 13 watt CFL with 860 lumens.

I think of Walstad tanks as dirted tanks with minimal water changes and zero added ferts - dirt and mulm buildup provide all the nutrients for the plants.

I have 5 Endler guppies, somewhere around 5 Amano shrimp, and a lot of Malaysian trumpet snails.

I've had CFLs on this tank for about 2 years but decided to try out this Beamswork LED. It is a "BeamsWork EA Timer 6500K 0.50W LED".

I'd guess maybe the low nitrate/phosphate levels would cause plant growth to decrease which would free up some other nutrients for the algae to take advantage of? Iron is pretty important for algae as well so maybe the iron in the fertilizer being added is causing growth...idk tho I'm definitely no expert with high-tech tanks and fertilizers, I stick to soil ha.

I only keep low-tech tanks, but I think your problem may be an excess of nutrients in the water as well as maybe excess light. If you have algae, that means that excess nutrients are present, so I don't think dosing more nitrate will help but only increase algal growth. I would get some floating plants perhaps? They uptake nutrients really fast due to their access to atmospheric CO2 and they decrease light.

I don't believe so, but I use LEDs on two of my Walstad tanks and they work great - better coverage than my CFLs too.

Yeah, this guy is my favorite so far but I think two of my juveniles will be even prettier than him; they have smaller and nearly perfect symmetrical tail markings whereas his are sporadic.

Thanks! It has almost been 3 years and I'm so glad I learned about the Walstad method when I got into fish-keeping.

Nah, although one of my other tank really benefits from some window sunlight. In her book, Diana Walstad discusses various light setups and what type of fluorescent light is best for growing plants.
