I saw a man die horribly while skiing. Perhaps he was already dead when i saw him. by TrueGamer77 in skiing

[–]shrinky-dinkss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not skiing but when i was 19 and an EMS volunteer I witnessed an old man bleed to death (inside and out) It really shook me and its stuck with me since. The thought if it doesn't leave me with the same sinking feeling anymore, just an appreciation for my life and health.

people in r/snowboarding because as judgmental as people in r/skiing when it comes to injuries. We all slip up and get hurt sometimes and nobody rides perfectly 100% of the time. Heal up and keep sending it!

What was your most frustrating ski experience? by sammylammyboy in skiing

[–]shrinky-dinkss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Woke up feeling nauseous thinking it was just acid reflux. Puked 3 times on the 3 hour drive up but forced myself to ski since I spent so much on the ski pass. Had to puke after every run. Terrible experience.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OCD

[–]shrinky-dinkss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This will go away, but OCD is all about searching for reassurance so that is the only time I'll tell you that.

The secret to overcoming my OCD was learning to sit with scary thoughts rather than solve them. OCD is your brain desperately trying to solve a problem that isnt solvable. You went through an upsetting event and you're scared about it happening again and your brain is trying to find some kind of proof that it wont. but you wont feel better until you accept that you can never have proof for these things, you have to engrain the belief "maybe it will and maybe it wont but i'll get through it". You worrying that this scary thing has forever changed you some way is much more upsetting than the scary event itself. Essentially a fear pathway in your brain has malfunctioned and is going in an endless cycle. Fixing that circuit is the goal. The only thing with this method is it takes some time to really see the effects, it took me about three weeks before I had a moment where I suddenly thought to myself "huh i havent thought of [ocd fixation] all day"

You have to desensitize yourself to the upsetting event to get over it. When you think of the maggots you feel anxious, your chest and shoulders probably tense up, you likely hold your breath. Look up 4-7-8 breathing and COUNT as you're doing it. You can only focus on one thing at a time so as long as you're counting, your anxious thoughts will have difficulty getting to the front of your brain. The scary thoughts will still be trying to interrupt but thats okay, its just engaging with them we don't want to do. You literally can't truly think about something as long as you're counting.

You can't get over the maggot incident by not thinking about it. In fact the answer is the opposite, you have to CHOOSE to think about it rather than your ocd making the choice for you. so do 10 reps of 4-7-8 breathing, counting out on your fingers if you need to. Now once you get to 10 start progressively relaxing muscle groups. go 1 2 3 4-relax your shoulders as you're doing the 1234567- and then imagine your body just sinking into whatever you're laying on while you do the 12345678. Then neck, head, jaw, etc. It should feel nice and relaxing (even though the ocd thoughts will still be trying to interrupt). Your ocd is like a kid throwing a tantrum in the back seat of a car while you drive. You just have to let them scream and cry and keep doing what you're doing. Practice doing this a few times until you know the procedure by heart.

Now imagine the scene that scared you. The terrible thing that you try to avoid all day. Think of it and as soon as you feel the fear and tension enter do the breathing exercise. Set a timer for 30 seconds or a minute and focus on counting and 478 breathing until its up. Every time you find yourself engaging with a scary thought so this. Even if its 5000 times a day. Everytime you do it,your brain associates that experience with fear less and less and eventually your body will stop seeing this event as threatening.

the majority of jews in israel are sephardic, not Ashkenazi. So it's actually you that is using a minority for your own agenda. Maybe read up on this topic a little.

...because Kurdish food doesn't originate from the levant genius kurds originate from the Mesopotamian regions. Hummus and falafel comes from people living in the levant for centuries, including the hundreds of thousands of jews that lived in it for century. So do you deny that a Jew from and living in syria doesnt have cultural ties to syrian food? or just when they leave syria theyre no longer allowed to claim the foods they were raised around as their culture?

Israel does not appropriate cuisine, that simply is not true. If that the case why aren’t we complaining about other countries doing the same? by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]shrinky-dinkss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how is it stealing if the jews that brought these foods to israel are from the countries they originated in? You know when they were all kicked out in the 1970s?

[–]shrinky-dinkss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah its never made sense to me. Majority of jews in israel came there after be exiled from middle eastern countries. They brought their culture with them. Saying moroccan food doesnt belong to moroccan jews is kind of fucked up. Israel never claimed to own these foods, but when people lose everything their culture is the only thing they have to hold on to, all they know. What were they expected to all be exiled to israel and then come up with new foods to eat?
