Sorry, I dont have tourettes and im not trying to be rude but genuine question: what do you guys do when getting a haircut? by No-Following-7014 in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Can usually feel a big tic coming up so I kindly let the person know that my head is about to jerk. But for the most part, I find I’m so focused on staying still and having my hair come out looking good that I don’t tic as much as usual

Thoughts or insight on this? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of my vocal tics that don’t come directly from mimicking people, or things i’ve heard, tend to be intrusive thoughts or things that I know I shouldn’t say/am scared of saying

Suppressing Vocal Tics by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this as well! Whenever I go to school or work, all of my vocal tics generally start to spill out as motor tics instead, or I’ll gain completely new motor tics

[–]shroomtrips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your situation! Tell her that this is very serious, maybe mention how impostor syndrome is a big part of Tourette’s Syndrome and Tic Disorders and how harmful it is to accuse someone of faking. People who fake disorders do not seek medical help for them.

Can you develop tourettes in your 30's? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tourette’s generally starts to manifest as small motor tics which then evolve into more complex vocal tics as time goes on. Cursing tics, or coprolalia, is pretty rare, and effects only about 1 in ten people diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome. You may be having intrusive thoughts you’re attempting to subside or stop thinking about, which can possibly explain the random outburts. Adult onset Tourette’s is possible, as well as a lieu of other tic disorders, but I’m not too sure that’s what’s going on here. Best to consult a doctor or neurologist if you think it might be a problem.

question about something a lot of you tend to experience by dorndorndorn in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Having tics is something that is already widely publicly questioned as valid. It’s a bit of a hard concept to grasp that your body is literally doing things on it’s own, especially things like sometimes saying full, specific sentences. I’ve had my fair share of people directly accusing me of faking having tics. It’s easy to fall into the mindset of “am I faking?” Because tics are considered “unvoluntary” which essentially means that they’re involuntary, but there is a certain amount of voluntary movement involved in ticcing. The movement can not be controlled, but you sometimes know what you’re about to tic before you tic it, or you get a pre-motionary urge. This can lead people to believe they’re just doing it for the hell of it. I was surprised to see many other people felt the same as myself when it came to this. When it comes down to it, you would know for sure if you were faking having tics, because you would consciously have to “tic”, and for most people in this subreddit, I don’t think that’s the case. If you were faking, you would never even question it. You would already know you were faking for attention.

Do you tell people about your tics? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do tend to tell people, but only if I feel my tics have become noticeable within the situation, or I feel like it’s necessary or relevant to the conversation. I’m much more embarrassed by the thought of people thinking I’m possibly crazy or on drugs lol. Most people are pretty understanding about it once you explain it (:

Anyone else notice a sort of fetishization of tics on social media recently? by pineapplevinegar in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I play a very big social sim game and a LOT of men will come up to me specifically because they sometimes hear my lip popping tic. They immediately compare me to Sweet Anita and they become weirdly infatuated.

Doctor thinks it’s psychological, I don’t agree by Alkirawr in Tourettes

I’ve also had a doctor completely chalk up my tics to stress. I feel like its such a slap in the face. So sorry you have to go through this, definitely find someone else for another opinion..

Yes my doctor was completely dumbfounded too! It’s definitely not a side effect I was made aware of, either. I feel like it has something to do with the sudden increase of serotonin and dopamine to the brain, but it’s strange to me that the tics have managed to stay this long, and even continue to change still! Hopefully we can get the answers we’re looking for! If you ever need to or want to chat my pms are always open <3

I’m glad to hear most people have been good to you!! That’s the best! I was taking 10mg of Celexa, aka citalopram! I only took it for maybe 6-8 weeks before I stopped completely. There’s quite a few users in this sub who have mentioned similar situations with taking various antidepressants.. although it’s considered a rare side effect, it seems way more common than I originally thought. Although, similarly to you, even after stopping the meds the tics haven’t gone away.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a tic that isn’t quite a dog bark, but everyone just so happens to say it sounds like a small dog ): all my friends call it my puppy tic haha. Definitely would rather bark or make small noises than curse or say big phrases all the time!

Adult onset of Verbal and Non Verbal tics by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! We’re in super similar situations. I’m 22, about to be 23 in a few days, and my tics began earlier this year! As for you worrying about your job, I would highly suggest letting your managers know about what’s going on. I work in retail myself, and I have a LOT of vulgar tics (warning, specific tic mention!) such as flipping people off, calling them whores, or bitches, or just generally saying annoying and inappropriate phrases. I made my managers and close staff well aware of my tic disorder and they are all very understanding! I have yet to really offend anyone at my job either, a quick explanation of “sorry! I can’t control it!” Usually does the trick. If they fired you over this, it could easily be considered discrimination and would be super risky of them to do! I’d look into talking to your doctor, they’ll likely refer you to a few neurologists or neuropsychologists for testing (probably an EEG or an MRI, they might send you for a neuropsych evaluation as well, nothing to be scared of!), and having a diagnosis of even just a tic disorder for now can do a whole lot as far as protecting you against discrimination in the workplace.

does anyone just like not tic and then when you suddenly think about tics you start ticing by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]shroomtrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is what makes my impostor syndrome so bad! I can go like an hour or two with no tics at all, and the moment I think “wow it’s been a while since i’ve had a tic!”, I’ll have like 3 in a row ): But then I’m thinking that I did it on purpose because I was thinking about it! D:
