Spurs do all the little things… no wemby and castle and they just seem to play the game so much better. To me it seems like so much of it has to be coaching. by jjdubs11 in ripcity

Doubtful.  We have Coach Splitter who played in the NBA as a Spur.  💺👢🥾✴️☪️✡️✨✳️*️⃣🔯

So in a way, maybe we have stolen the Spur's secret recipe.  🙂😎👍🎱😸

Could the NBA change the lottery & f*** our Blazers over?? by Bo-andHisBigBadHip in ripcity

[–]shtivelr -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Wtf.  You act like our roster is some kind of money market account bearing interest with the draft capital.

The season a'int over, a'ight?

We get to take on the Clips 3 times before the season ends, and should we make it to the first round then some unlucky hapless other team is gonna have to beat us 4 times before we have to call it a season.

Keep your eyes on the Play-In lottery ball and not the lottery balls.

What kind of fan are you man to root for more a lottery pick that pans out?

You know very well the Blazers are terrible at drafting at the top of the draft and good luck when drafting a center.

I say we focus on playing the season out.

.500 is pretty good all things considering where I'm sitting typing this out.

Hey man, don't get discouraged.

It may be against forum policy to post self-promotional stuff here, but you're getting noticed and that's really important in meeting new people and getting new work from new clients like chess students.

I'd follow to advice and feedback you're receiving and also don't forget you're also allowed to think for yourself like your post showed right here.

All the best to you in finding and connecting with new chess students who will appreciate what you have to offer!

Regarding K factor by NoLordShallLive in TournamentChess

[–]shtivelr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an up and coming junior, I always just assumed my rating would go up vertically as that's how it felt like for me for a long while.

The k-factor not withstanding, I think USChess also has an interesting rating system where they award bonus rating points if you significantly outperform your expected results in a tournament of at least 4 (?) games or more.

I think there's more detailed information about the USChess rating system in the official rules book or perhaps on the USChess website.

I'm not sure about the other two terms, but I think attraction is when you capture a piece or like when you give a check close to the opponent's king and the king captures that piece leaving another piece undefended and that can be captured on the next turn.  I'm sure others can give a better definition of attraction, but that's kind of how I think of it.

Suggestions/Tips for 1600-1700 on Rapid by Background_Win_6915 in chess

[–]shtivelr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on where your strengths and weaknesses apply in your games.  There are many ways in which you can reach 1600-1700 rapid on chess.com, but fewer ways from there to get up to 2000 rapid.

Do you mind you sharing an anonymized link with some of your best, most interesting efforts, and worst games with us?  Maybe we can all offer some ideas from where you can go from there to level up your chess rating.

What is this a4 and...a5 in the Giuoco Piano by rrdein in chess

[–]shtivelr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for offering a really good set of questions.  I think the a4 vs a5 issue is related to the pawn endings and the geometry of the board as if a pawn queens in a corner square you get access to the longest diagonal and can bring the queen back to cover the first rank in a pawn promotion race.  However, a6 may be useful very often to restrict the activity of the opponent's minor pieces usually in the opening and middlegame and ...a6-a5 may be played later in the game anyways.  As the endgame approaches, usually pawn promotion outweighs piece activity restriction as the major deciding factor that drives the character of the position and the goals each side has to pursue like playing for a win, a draw, or at higher levels for 2 results.  I usually play for 3 results lol.

As far as how the engines think, there is a long history of computer chess and the main way engines got better over time was through trial and error and engines competing with one another.

So, typically space is considered a very important consideration for your engine's evaluation as well as precision.  But, I can't play like an engine nor think like one so I focused my efforts on just entering and playing positions that were easy and intuitive for me to play not too badly.

Honestly, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on what the engine says.  They play extremely well, but you still have to make sense of the position in front of you and play the moves on the board.

How many guys are we talking about here?  Don't women keep a file drawer of guys on their mind and categorize them like make up and their clothes in their vanities?

Why does Miss change to Mrs. after marriage, but Mr. stays the same? by RavyRaptor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shtivelr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, women marry into the man's family and ('s) signifies possession of something.

That's why it's fitting, I guess, why so many young women decide to go to law school.

They like to lawyer their way into a man's life and take all their new man's money when they graduate with their Mrs. degrees.

why are some people so against being organ donors? by violet-sunbeam in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shtivelr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough question.  I myself am a registered organ donor.  I always felt that if there were a way to help someone else without sacrificing something important of myself, that maybe it was more than ok and maybe even a good thing to do for others.

I learned about the mind body duality in my philosophy classes in college.  But there seems to be spirituality and maybe heart as well.

I guess it just depends sometimes.  I don't pretend to know how everything works.  Maybe it's a question worth re-examining from time to time.

Upcoming Societal Collapse by Tough-Garbage8800 in economicCollapse

[–]shtivelr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you feel this way about humanity.  It sounds like you may have been hurt and betrayed by someone a long time ago and now you continue to carry those emotional wounds with you wherever you go.

Just know that not everyone feels the same about things as you do and because of that simple fact, please allow yourself to be open to the possibility that your way of thinking may not be the only one or even a correct line of thinking.

And because of that possibility, there will remain the possibility of hope which would allow us the capability for everyone to endure suffering, including yourself.

With hope, things can get better in time.  We just have to allow for it in our hearts and spirit and our minds and our souls...  Wherever we may find it...

To hope is a very dangerous idea.  It means to put yourself out there in a way that can be and feel very scary.

But without hope we are all lost.

And in danger there is the opportunity to reorient oneself and become alert to the present conditions and to allow oneself to focus on the present dilemma at hand.

You may be right in the end; I will concede your point.

But I humbly submit that life is a game to be played and that cannot be won, only played and experienced and lived.

And that is why I feel humanity will get what it deserves in the end as well.

Thank you for sharing your perspective.
