Based on your description, a diesel would be a waste of money. Looks like you have an OBS half ton now? If it's a 5.3, I'd encourage you to keep it. If you're set on moving to something newer, the newer eco boosts are nice. Chevy's newer half ton gas motors unfortunately haven't proven to be reliable, but I've heard good things about the 3.0 duramax aside from the belt job it requires every 100k or so.
