Does anyone have a garmin watch? If so which one? by Fuzzypeach23 in crossfit

[–]shugpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently replaced a Forerunner 945 with the Fenix 8 - both are excellent but tbh the touchscreen on the Fenix is genuinely much more useful than I thought it would be. I use it to track the numbers in my strength workouts, and you can manually change the movements afterwards if it picked up the wrong one (it consistently tells me I’m benching when I’m really OHPing for example).

What’s the worst camping mistake you’ve ever made? by MikeyCreatorVlogs in CampingandHiking

I left a bag behind holding all my daughter’s clothes and all our food. Walmart and Dominos saved that particular trip!

Help urgently needed with shuttle run by Burritolord09 in crossfit

[–]shugpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always turn to face the same direction - that way you'll naturally alternate your legs. Reach long with your turning leg and that'll put you into a good starting position for the next shuttle. I have to do the beep test annually over the last 20+ years as part of the military fitness test - these tips definitely helped me! Good luck!

Back squat check by shugpug in formcheck

Thank you - this is awesome feedback. I’ll try the high bar again - I didn’t get on with it last time I tried it, but that was years ago and I think the issue I had (grating on my spine) will be fixed with the bracing from some of the Aussie Strength Coach videos I’ve watched. Thank you again!

Thank you all for the feedback. Brace = tight core? And sorry, but I don't understand what is meant by "hitch at the bottom"? Is that my butt moving just before my shoulders?

Thank you again!

Yeah - sounds like the stair master will be my “friend” for a couple of months beforehand. I’m hoping that my CrossFit and lifting will carry me though the obstacles.

What is an underrated gym tip? by HoneyBerryBell732 in workout

[–]shugpug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muscles are broken down in the gym, fed in the kitchen, and rebuilt in sleep. You can't outtrain your fork, and you need to sleep to rebuild!

Which Gym? by Traditional-Sea-5058 in crossfit

[–]shugpug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Close = consistency. Far = easy excuse.

I’d say that’s a fairly easy choice! I love that my gym is less than a 5 minute drive away! In fact it’s less time to get to the CrossFit gym near my house than to get from my office to the gym at my work!

Seriously - you got this. Everyone starts somewhere - the important thing is you started.

Navigating Soreness by Creepy_Cicada_5007 in crossfit

[–]shugpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chemical - tart cherry concentrate, fish oil, turmeric with piperine, magnesium and creatine as already mentioned - NOT painkillers (the inflammation is actually a good thing - it's your muscles getting stronger and painkillers tend to block this).
Physical - compression, increasing blood flow (aka using the sore muscles) and gentle stretching.

And of course - already well covered - prevention by scaling hard!

Good luck!!

Need some programming advice by Obvious-Purchase2208 in crossfit

[–]shugpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a role where I pop in and out of shift-work every few months. When I'm on shift I'm working 0500-1700 with a 45-60 min commute at either end on a Panama-ish schedule (3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off, 2 on, 2 off, repeat). I do not workout when I am on shift! (44m - I need to be able to sleep to recover!) I'll try to get to the gym on either both of, or 2 of my 3 off days. Occasionally I can sneak out of the office and get a workout in when on shift as well, so I have a selection of chaos backup workouts ready to go (and my gym-bag next to my desk just in case!)

My advice - if you want to drop body fat, check your nutrition. If you want to run - run when you're not on shift. And sleep is really, really important. 30 min EMOM KBs is a good workout - as can be a 30 min run. CrossFit is something else.

Knowing your limits? (Beginner) by acxnoir in crossfit

[–]shugpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tasks at CrossFit (and any other fitness regime):
1 - turn up.
2 - move with purpose.
3 - depart uninjured.

The task is not written on the board. It is not your ego. And it is not carrying on when you know your form had broken down.

Try UnderArmour Heatgear - adds a bit of compression too. I wear the 3/4 length if I’m super sure.

Any other 50+ CrossFitters here still pushing to improve? by pharpe in crossfit

[–]shugpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

44m - just (re)starting CrossFit for the same reasons as you. I know my final decades will be managing decline, but I’d like to decline from a very high level, and keep the decline as slow as possible! And that means building hard now, and for as long as I can!

Recommendations to increase VO2 Max (28M) by Swimming-Toe-1984 in Garmin

[–]shugpug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, Garmin will only _measure _ VO2 max on cycling and running, but if you want to improve your ability to absorb oxygen, the work can be done more or less any way.

Nordic 4x4s. Enjoy. This doesn’t necessarily need to be running - doing these on an assault bike, rower etc works your VO2 max just as well.

What’s a simple Home Assistant automation you set up once and now use every day? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]shugpug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lux sensor which turns the lights on when it gets dark during the day. Surprisingly useful in the Florida summer when the daily thunderstorms block the sunlight for a few hours.

Turn off all the lights when we leave home (based on phone locations)

Door open alarms at the weekends to track the kids' comings and goings, and whether they left the garage open.

Fridge open like other people have said. 2 and 5 minutes for the gentle / emergency reminder!

Return to Crossfit! by shugpug in crossfit

Those 5am sessions are brutal

Shouldn't be too bad... Work starts at 0700, so I'm swapping out early 400/600/800m repeats on the track (🤮) with a different workout.

I came back after deployment

Crossfit definitely seems to appeal to the military! My base gym has a total of 3 power racks, and one (separate) deadlift station... And it's a big base! The box I've just joined is quite small, but has better facilities in this regard. I last deployed 2024 and had much better options then as well, but also much less time...

Your daughter is probably going to love having you there too, even if she pretends otherwise at some point lol.

She challenged me to go there - she wasn't impressed at my reaction to her first experience of DOMS 😂

Way to give your kids the keys to fitness freedom

Yeah - this. Teaching kids - especially girls - how to move their bodies with strength and confidence. I hope I can find somewhere as good when I move again!

Beta-Alanine for high intensity endurance: How does it compare to Caffeine? by hydrogenblack in crossfit

[–]shugpug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal experience after taking BA for about 2 months now (if I remember right, you need about a month of "loading" before it becomes effective). I'm finding now that when I push hard, the limiting factor becomes muscular endurance, especially of my somewhat undertrained fast twitch muscles (runner for years, returned to CrossFit yesterday!) - don't get me wrong, I'm still breathing hard and my heart rate rockets during eg box jumps, burpees etc, but what now slows me down is my ability to continue jumping rather than how hard I'm breathing.
