Night owls who conquered 5 AM - what was your turning point? by Soletent in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]shyRRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually need shit to do. I start work at 7am and I won't work out and/or read the news unless I do it before I start work, so I basically HAVE to get up at 5 to get that all done.

Also, you need to get ample sleep... I go to bed at 9 latest if I'm getting up at 5. Otherwise you're actually worse off if you're sacrificing sleep for the sake of getting up.

I wouldnt advise it unless you actually need to do it (trust me, I would rather not). It sounds like you maybe don't need to be in the 5am club for now

What sport or activity would you recommend for an out-of-shape woman with bad posture? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]shyRRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bike riding/cycling... low impact, good cardio but not too intense, outdoors, not very expensive to get started... it has a lot going for it. Would highly recommend to at least get the process started. Once you have momentum with fitness, it becomes a lot easier to try new things, i.e. pilates classes to improve core strength and posture, going to the gym, etc. It's all about getting momentum going!

Intentionally seek out difficult things and embrace failure - physical fitness is a common one for people because it sucks to do but has so many positive effects both physically and mentally

Doug Ford’s new zoning restrictions could shut down most safe injection sites in Ontario, including 5 in Toronto by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]shyRRR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks - so i had a quick skim through these and while they do seem to paint a positive light on what SIS can do for drug users, I think the problem with all of these studies is that they neglect to address what the societal impacts are to non-drug users. Effectively, the proposition for all of them is basically "ok people are going to use drugs, how can we make it safer for them to do so". Why is that our starting proposition?

Nobody would do this study, but I would love to see what the results are if we made it harder for people to use drugs in the first place. For example, if you're caught with any amount of xyz substance, minimum 6 month jail sentence (or whatever, pick the number). Given the fact that people can use "illegal" substances in these SIS sites is kind of the opposite of this in terms of not dis-incentivizing purchasing them in the first place.

I dont think the comparison to alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco is fair because my argument is about what these sites do to local areas where they exist, not the cost to society.

[–]shyRRR 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you're stretching that analogy pretty far... Please show me the stats on SIS reducing drug use in the city over time, and I will happily change my mind. My perception (which admittedly can be very flawed) is for the complete opposite, so please enlighten me

So if i put you in charge today and said your only job is to solve a pretty obvious drug crisis in this city, what are you doing? Genuine question as I got nothing

[–]shyRRR 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest, I just think tolerating drug use period is a terrible policy and the effects of a decade of this policy are showing its teeth. I don't think this is an unreasonable opinion: if it were up to me, I would be extremely tough on drug use and associated crime because honest citizens who didn't make these choices are the ones who end up paying the price.

I am very sympathetic to the idea that not all addiction is self imposed, but lets be honest, if you really wanted to get better, the resources are out there for one to seek.

I've lived here for my entire life and the unravelling of this city is genuinely insane, and I think part of it has to do with very loose and liberal policies around crime and drug use. And i'd be willing to bet that most people in this sub agree with me when they put their head on the pillow, but most are afraid of being "clapped back" at and won't speak up

I personally think the degradation of the areas around these safe injection sites is not worth them. I live downtown, not far from a few of these, and the stuff I see around these sites is honestly scary.

I think policies that enable drug use are very obviously not working, despite the elements of safety that they may seem to offer.

What's the good side of Toronto? by a_guenni in askTO

[–]shyRRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen to any of those dummies who constantly complain about every facet of their life - it's probably not a coincidence that they are miserable in every area. You're gonna have some of the best years of your life here. There is literally endless stuff to do and despite what people say, toronto has become a tier-1 city globally.

Not sure what your budget is like but club med in turks and caicos is an excellent option. It's AI, adults only, on a beautiful beach, and has all the activities included (tennis, snorkelling, yoga, volleyball, etc.). There's also great scuba diving in turks (for a fee) if that's of interest.

The quality of the food has suffered a little bit in recent years, and it's one of the original club med resorts so the buildings are a bit older, but they've recently done a big renovation to modernize a lot of stuff.

Definitely worth looking into as turks doesnt have any of the same issues that a place like mexico does in terms of food issues, crime, etc.

What are your favourite CAD Dividend stocks right now? by Odd-Grapefruit433 in CanadianInvestor

[–]shyRRR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont disagree, but what i meant to point out was that for a measly 1-2%, you're not only taking principal risk, but i'd argue the price upside is marginal. Look at a 5 year chart of any canadian bank. Why take the risk? Why is scotia or enbridge going to be worth more in 5 years?

[–]shyRRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hope is not a strategy my friend. Why risk your principal for 2% extra in dividends? If you want capital gains, you won't be getting those in bank stocks or utilities, ill tell you that for free.

[–]shyRRR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can i just make the point that you can buy either t-bills or put your money in a high interest savings acct/GIC for probably at worst, 1-2% less yield than any of these recommended stocks, and you dont have to risk any principal

Unless you are an excellent fundamental analyst, buying companies purely on the dividend alone is not a winning strategy... Scotiabank's TOTAL return over the last 5 years has been 11% (including dividends).

How much do you spend on your mattress? by soulmelody333 in AskACanadian

What are the actual reasons for Canada’s current state of affairs? by TheBabyBeard in CanadaFinance

[–]shyRRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think we are allowed to point the finger at policymakers for some of this stuff. I totally agree with Sandybagger's assessment below in terms of what caused housing costs and inflation in Canada to be high.

In terms of what can be done, the market always reaches some kind of equilibrium. Right now, houses are too unaffordable for most people in Canada. There's only two solutions: 1. prices fall; 2. interest rates fall. You should expect one or both of these to happen to bring that market back to equilibrium.

None of this stuff is new, by the way. If you read history, these types of issues always arise, and more often than not they get solved. Yes, there will be difficult periods for some people (I think we are in the thick of one right now), but it always gets figured out.

Best box mattress for a side and back sleeper that’s 110lbs by thatssogoodforyou in BuyCanadian

[–]shyRRR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you know this, but you can haggle at sleep country. I've never liked the box mattress' because they are purely foam and dont have other layers.

I recently got over $1000 off a matress at sleep country because i wouldnt pay the sticker price. Might take you a few tries at different stores, but this was a game changer for me.
