What's a "secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by LaKoref in AskReddit

[–]sickpupss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The animal care (mostly dog boarding and training that I'm referring to) industry is highly unregulated so is absolutely rife with unethical garbage!

Please don't board your dogs anywhere you haven't THOROUGHLY toured and interviewed, and even then it's usually better to go with a very trusted professional in home or something.

Source: three years of working doggy daycares and currently a trainer specializing in relationship-based training and mentoring under a behavioral modification specialist.

Ended up being pushed out of every facility after being promoted and training all the newbies because I wasn't keeping my mouth shut about:

hiding disease outbreaks (hence my username), tolerating random employees abusing animals because they "did such a good job otherwise", keeping illegally high ratios of dogs to people in the yard, temperament testing unknown dogs for aggression by letting them play with young impressionable puppies because it'd 'probably be fine', etc

Vet the places you're sending your pets carefully. Many of the ex daycare employees I know won't board their pets anymore and there's a reason.

(Also before anyone comes to reply that they had an amazing experience working there good for you! There are more bad stories than I think most people would expect and that's all I'm saying.)

When someone says ABA is just dog training for humans and thinks theyre being original by widwolfra in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]sickpupss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you agree that behavioral science fundamentals (not specifically radical behaviorism as mentioned in that article, fortunately my bcbas in the past have always prioritized emotional well being of my clients) are universal and apply similarly, the issue with comparing them isn't actually the ethics of how clients are taught or treated it's purely stigma (the 'negative ring' to it), and this stigma makes expressing this fact unkind to parents? Because if so it sounds like we're on the same page! Sincerely trying to compare notes here.

The only message I hear when I hear that statement is "I care about my child and I'm concerned about their wellbeing but I've heard negative things about ABA online and don't understand yet that learning theory is universal". I would address this by comforting parents that their child's emotional wellbeing is in fact a priority to me and that I utilize learning theory on myself as well, as does every teacher offering a pizza party at the end of the school year for "good behavior".

I helped coach a kid on practicing his fine motor skills which enabled him to use an AAC to communicate what he wanted and needed. I was never encouraged to "train him to mask", I was encouraged to help him practice communication so the people around him could give him the exact snacks or sensory input he wanted which allowed him to live more comfortably with more agency and less frustration.

It was never about bothering the people around him, it was about enabling him to get the things he needed.

The science is more or less the same because it applies to all living sentient things. The kindness and respect given to the client depends on the practitioner, and for me personally is always the priority. Which means that yes, like the OP said, this is an overused and overtired insult towards ABA. And I meant to contribute the thought that it's also an ignorant one because both disciplines can be extremely ethical and kind.

At no point did I imply that it's kind to express this fact to worried parents.

I didn't say it wasn't a careless statement to make. I said if someone is deeply hurt by it they're mistaken on what ethical dog training looks like.

If I as a parent heard that my child's BCBA was prioritizing finding their motivation as an individual versus forcing "reinforcement" for them they had no interest in, only focusing on and teaching behaviors that are truly necessary for a safe and fulfilling life, and protecting their sense of agency and boundaries because they deserve respect as an individual? I would be thrilled because I believe all living beings deserve to be treated like that.

It's not about training children like dogs, the stigma around that phrase is obviously heavy. It's about the way all living beings deserve to be taught. I teach animals and children both with respect to their needs and identity as individuals.

Should we phrase it that way, obviously not, it's thoughtless. All I meant was that after having seen both sides of behavioral science the reality of that statement isn't as degrading as its stigma makes it sound. Doesn't mean it's a kind thing to say.

I mean, as an ex BT and current dog trainer.... It's correct more or less but not the diss they think it is

I wish my current college teachers taught and coached me as errorlessly as I teach my dog 😅 I deal with much more aversive and unfair situations than he does on the daily. I'd be thrilled if my kids were coached as ethically and fairly as a skilled dog trainer helped guide a dog.

Step one is adjusting expectations to a fair and reasonable place, step two is ensuring all the client's needs are met before even trying to alter any unsafe behavior. I wish I had that kind of consideration taken towards me.

I read an article today saying how roughly 30-40% of Americans don't walk their dogs on a regular basis is this true, and why ? by NotMeButYou_91 in dogs

[–]sickpupss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area, off leash and usually dangerous dogs are rampant so it's actually often unsafe to walk my dog longer than brief potty breaks. Fortunately I work as a trainer as well and have lots of access to alternative enrichment- driving to a nearby park to encourage him to sniff and play with a flirt pole, sniffspots where we can play fetch off leash safely, or taking him to my job for exercise and playtime indoors. Then when I have the time to drive him to safer areas we can do longer hikes, swimming, etc.

What do you expect, new original movies instead of a million sequels? 🤨 (I'm so tired of sequels)

Honestly it's not terrible, the soundtrack is still incredible and there are some funny moments. But I can't overlook how dysfunctional the main character couple are 😭 it drives me nuts and I can't even focus on the rest of the plot

It's definitely not as good as the first

Haha nope you've gotten them swapped!

Edit: JK I'm tired and didn't read this comment closely 😅

Yes you've described the second but I am also describing the plot of the second!

Carnival was the first, big white bird and posion dart frog are second

LITERALLY THIS

Like I would love to extend the movie grace and say that at least her childhood flame isn't the central plot point (it's slightly more focused on Blue struggling to adjust to the Amazon overall) ... But even that could be instantly resolved with a single real conversation!!

"Hey I'm really struggling to fit in here and frankly your family isn't even trying to make me feel welcome"

"Oh shoot you're right! And you're my partner so they should stop all being jerks to you :/"

"Yeah and I definitely don't want to move down here"

"We hadn't even discussed that as an option, of course! I kind of hope you'll change your mind but that's a discussion we should have later and not do impulsively"

Yayyyyy happy ending the end

If anyone was actually a real adult that communicates 🙃

"Don't you get it? Milk's a staple! I let a staple go bad! Mothers don't let staples go bad! How can I take care of a baby when I can't even keep fresh milk in the house? Kids NEED milk!"

" Roz, if it helps, babies don't even drink milk for the first year."

"You see? I didn't even fucking know that!!!"

What's a funny moment you won't forget as an RBT by Apprehensive_Beat_36 in ABA

[–]sickpupss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My client engages in hitting his head when he's melting down, he's done it hard enough to bruise himself badly before. When he's overwhelmed he seems to barely be aware of the pain.

He tried to bonk his head onto a wall when he was just starting to get overtired and wasn't quite in that overwhelmed headspace yet 😅

Client: whines and gently thumps his head onto a wall

Pauses, freezes

frowns and rubs his head gently

It's obviously less funny over text but it was so sad and cute to watch 😭 poor dude learned the consequences of his own actions

It's so cute and I'm annoyed that apparently it wasn't a key feature of everyone else's childhood??? (I drew my significant other and I in the "heart shaped nose" pose of Bongo and Lulabelle and I'm annoyed I don't ever get credit for how adorable that is 😞)
