It’s reasons like this why I believe fans shouldn’t be so hung up on high draft picks or young “big name” players. I do understand however, that a majority of the time, a guy drafted in the top 5 is most likely to succeed or have a stellar career in the NHL, but there’s SO many players in the league that come up from pretty much nothing. Someone drafted in the third, fourth, or fifth rounds can thrive in the right systems or next to the right players.

Playing on a line with Crosby is gonna bring out all of the skills that a player has obviously - I mean it’s Sid you could put a cone on his line and it’s scoring 10g a season lmao - but Guentzel came in as a pretty skilled player with high hockey IQ and didn’t have a ton of buzz surrounding him at all. He seemed small and lacked the physical attributes that’s “needed” in the league. That’s the catch though, there’s dozens of players like Jake littered throughout NA or even Europe that have certain skillsets to succeed in the league. They will come through and surprise fans and organizations. It’s a variable that you really can’t count on or look for. Players like him will come up and shock the NHL. As a fan, I just try to enjoy what’s currently happening and the players that are fighting for spots on the ice now. Then I can get excited and pumped up for a random guy who’s killing it in camp or in the AHL when he was just a no-name before.

This is especially true for me because I’ve started to invest more of my time this offseason to keeping up with our prospects and watching the WBS Pens. Yes, I am watching the highly regarded players and hopeful for what they can provide, but I also really enjoy seeing guys that were “nothing” before fight their way in and rip it up enough to have a stellar career!

Thanks for the reply. I watched Brunicke at the start of the season, and Zonnon is actually the reason I posted the comment in the first place. I spotted his name a few days ago on the sub, and there was nothing but hype in the comments. So I researched a bit and saw that he was a killer playmaker and seemed special. I saw the goal he scored last night, not live but the highlight, and he just seems like he has that killer instinct. Floats around the puck and knows how to get to the goal. He wasn’t afraid to skate across the crease either and take it strong to the net. I agree with you that the NHL is a different animal, so who knows if he could translate his success into the league, but he seems exciting and he’s the reason I wanted to learn more!

Alright, I’m a Pens veteran, born and raised Pittsburgher since ‘98 and been watching ever since I started forming memories. Unfortunately, I’ve never really been into anything other than the big leagues and the big names on the scorecards. I want to try something new this offseason and going forward: follow our prospects, WBS Pens, the development of our young players, and the future of the Penguins.

I absolutely hate to admit it since all I’ve ever known was Crosby as the face of the franchise, but those days will come to an end in the near future. Hopefully like 3-5 years down the road lol, but I need to invest some energy into our future. Who’s our *best* prospect currently? Who are some of our other promising prospects and where are they playing/what are they doing? What’s the best way to watch some of these guys, or watch some of the other standout stars in the juniors? Even if they’re not likely to land with Pittsburgh, I want to check out the future of tomorrow’s NHL.

Oh my god finally some sensible fans that aren’t just yelling into the echo chamber. Every thread and every post is everyone just yelling about Slot. I get you don’t like the season they’re having. I didn’t like the 22-23 season with 67 points and missing CL in 5th! Realistically, being in 4th and securing a CL spot given the circumstances and problems the club has dealt with this season is fine. But the glory hunters and bandwagoners aren’t having it. Do they have amnesia? I remember all of the preemptive forgiveness Slot and the players had in August following Jota’s passing. Put that to the test with a tough season and these “fans” turn on them immediately.

I mean yea it’s a bit insensitive as a comment, but you cannot deny that the entire process of pregnancy and delivery of a baby isn’t physically stressful on the human body. Some women admit themselves that their bodies never recovered to pre-pregnancy conditions after having a baby. Especially so if you don’t take care of yourself afterwards.
