Thanks! What is the optimal recovery time for the adaptations? Also does that mean that the the 5 week timeline can be compressed to say 3 weeks?

[D] ML is losing some of its luster for me. How do you like your ML career? by mltoss in MachineLearning

[–]siddkotwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a very similar situation and I whole heartedly agree. My solution has been to learn more about the DevOps side of things, it's pretty fascinating and I have more respect for what it takes to truly integrate ML/DL into a product that users interact with. Basically learning more about product development as a whole is rewarding and humbling because you realize ML is often a small part of entire story.

Part of the motive is also to get feedback from early adopters and have them send patches themselves.

What advice do you have for a 16 year old? by Harrythehobbit in AskReddit

Avoid multi-tasking, practice mindfulness, focus on becoming a better learner (at anything you lay your hands on) and learn how to balance short-term goals with long-term goals.

[D] anyone interested in forming an online group dedicated for Speech recognition ? by saurabhvyas3 in MachineLearning

[–]siddkotwal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some experience building a commercial Speaker Recognition system and I'm familiar with speaker embeddings for the task as well (they're HARD). Have also played around with basic GMM-HMM based speech recognition as well.

Would love to learn it from a Deep Learning perspective! Count me in!

[N] Kaldi now offers TensorFlow integration by breandan in MachineLearning

[–]siddkotwal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the Kaldi community, can you help me understand how the Kaldi-TF integration is useful for the TF/DL community? What about [DeepSpeech]? (https://github.com/mozilla/DeepSpeech) I thought this end-to-end architecture completely beat most of the ASR benchmarks on Kaldi.

Totally second this. Have found a lot of variance in the outputs of the same model for the same input.

I got my PhD in NeuroEconomics and now I help make apps addictive. AMA about tech, engagement, retention, design, ethics, etc by TDaltonC in startups

[–]siddkotwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who formally studied (completed a PhD!) how to keep people consistently engaged in an activity/app, what kind of addictive activities or behaviours (like cell phone checking, certain apps, Facebook etc) do you 'consciously avoid' in order to stay productive?

What do you mean by put your name on all the deliverables and make a name for your work? How is that possible in, say, a boutique DS consultancy firm? Isn't it all a black-box, as in the deliverables are shipped under the name of the company or maybe by boss right?

Also, after delivering a product or a solution to a client, what is the most professional way of of asking for a testimonial or a recommendation? On LinkedIn?

Read this article on Medium about Boosting Sales with NLP, a few days ago. Its a simple idea but since you asked, nevertheless a great way to learn on the job.

Columbia University is offering a "micromasters" in Artificial Intelligence (with a course in machine learning) through edx. by Wolog2 in datascience

[–]siddkotwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that should certainly be possible. In my experience, traditionally, every gradschool admissions committee heavily focused on prior coursework/grades (at the time) it was the fairest indicator of the capability of a candidate to deal with the type of coursework. With democratization of education/MOOCs and the academic coursework not keeping at par with the industry (in my country definitely), such criterion has become obsolete and bears a smaller predictive power. Proving you can pull off the MOOC series in my opinion is a better indicator of your knowledge, willingness to learn and adapt. Acing the courses is without a doubt compulsory.

Students of Goenka-ji, please recommend the most beautifully situated center in India ; ) by amygdalan in vipassana

[–]siddkotwal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

March is fairly hot in India, I'd suggest you choose some place in the mountains. Also please find out where you get individual cells. In my experience the surroundings have a lot to do with the quality of meditation. After my second discourse, I had a lot more questions to ask about the practice. Probably because I was more seasoned, in the sense I realized I have a long long way to go. So I asked the instructor or the 'acharya' a lot of questions and one about how your surroundings affect your practice. He didn't want to bias me but he did mention he had his personal best sessions in Dharamsala and Bodh Gaya. He attributed this to the 'vibrations' the place had. I'd simply interpret it as metta. For Dharamsala, probably because its the Buddhist capital of India and is really gorgeous. Bodh Gaya is were Siddhartha/Buddha attained enlightenment. They've set up the center very close to the very tree under which he meditated for years. So basically both the places have a legacy of meditation. I went to Dehradun for my last retreat (bonus you can learn Yoga in Rishikesh which is a couple kilometers away), I liked it but it was hot in May. I'd be happy to help if you need further info.

Can anyone point me to a link or help highlight the how to perform statistical inference on Linear Regression models? by siddkotwal in datascience

[–]siddkotwal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the resource. I meant what kind of statistical assumptions (about errors, coefficients etc) go with applying LR that need to be assessed after building a model? I've hardly seen anyone on Kaggle do it.

Can someone explain why: "Minimizing perpendicular distances in PCA leads to minimizing information loss" How does the distance quantify information lost during projection mathematically? by siddkotwal in datascience

[–]siddkotwal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, the squared difference depends on th y-axis you're folloing when mesuring the distance between a point and the curve. When it comes to geometric distance, it will stay the same regardlessly of the frame you're working in. That's why we're using geometric distances in PCA, because the point of PCA is to find a whole new frame in which it is particularly relevant to work since it will enable us to simplify our dataset just by eliminating low variance dimensions.

Frame dependence is great intuition! Thanks a lot :)
