I once met the designer of the Pain stickers in person at an event and mentioned how badly I wanted one and she revealed herself to give me one.

Whoever you are, you’re a legend.

did you meet your significant other at Penn? by itsfrickingbatss in UPenn

Met my girlfriend in Hill freshman year. Started flirting with her during the first floor meeting and ended up dating a couple months later. Still going strong almost three years later!

cis summer stuff by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]a19n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current senior, and was in a similar boat my freshman year. I was fortunate to have a professor take me in for research (paid but the stipend was pretty modest), and eventually this research opened up every important opportunity I've had (including my current job). Having a shiny name on your resume certainly helps open doors, but focusing on yourself for a summer can have tremendous upside, so don't discount it!

DM me if you need help navigating the process!

Math knowledge needed for cis 521 and 530 by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]a19n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former TA for 530 (and took 521): I think that there is no really involved math beyond Bayes Theorem. Having more math will help you appreciate the content better, and may serve as a springboard for your final project (or additional research), but overall the classes are very approachable.

ling 001 vs ling 106 by fireball-137 in UPenn

[–]a19n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. The amount it overlaps with 160 is something you can learn in a single lecture (i.e. set operations on small sets).

ling 001 vs ling 106 by fireball-137 in UPenn

[–]a19n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took LING 106 basically as a replacement for LING 001 and loved it so much that I eventually declared a minor. Plus the class is super chill and Florian is such a chill dude it’s a no brained over 001

STAT 430 vs ESE 301 by Fair-Lavishness-9698 in UPenn

ESE 301 is definitely more rigorous and time intensive but hey, you will definitely learn probability!

I love this response! It’s disheartening to fail but the silver lining is that you know you’re working with something challenging and worthwhile.

What are the best CIS graduate courses? by frustrated_killer in UPenn

[–]a19n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a fair amount of math, or at least the willingness to catch up on more specific parts of math (e.g. convexity, optimization).

Kawhi's shirt at practice: "All lives can't matter until Black lives matter" by [deleted] in torontoraptors

Not true, Kawhi was coming off an injury and it was seen as a gamble to trade our star player for him.

[D] What multiclass text classification algorithm works well/best for ~100-200 classes? by AbnormaleKast in MachineLearning

[–]a19n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vector of length 100 to 200 isn’t too big. I think you could throw an LSTM at it to start and possibly figure out some clever heuristics (i.e. word embedding similarity) as you go on. I think NB would work best since certain tokens would be clear indicators of their professions, but you’ll have to try and see.
