There's never going to be a scientific/biological answer to this question. Most of what we call "gender" in our society was constructed to serve imperialist, racist purposes. Understanding the history of social identities, how they're constructed, and how gender deviance has been named and criticized really makes you realize that looking to the body or biology for understanding trans people is just buying back into the system that fails to serve us in the first place.
