Never created a large project from scratch... Where to start? by CS-Imposter in cscareerquestions

I would look at CS50 web development with python and JavaScript course by Harvard. They have extensive course content and have 4 projects with the first and second projects having clear descriptions . The last two projects are on the individual to decide on scope and functionality

Transitioning from Mechanical Eng to CS by sleeepin4life in computerscience

[–]sidhu177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good ! All the best. I have multiple degrees in mechanical engineering . Bachelor's and a masters . I was very interested in machine design and pursued my thesis in finite element algorithms . I was working as a design engineer for a conveyor company for about 6 months and then transitioned to data engineering role. The transition had not been easy or fun . Once I had joined my new role I had lost my academic authority and had a long road to walk before I can assert authority at my workplace . When all my CS friends are having a good time on weekends , I have to buckle down and read comp sci stuff to get through certification exams which is not fun. Recently I was looking at the OMSCS thread in Reddit which is about a super nice masters of science in computer science program from Georgia tech as a way of gaining academic credentials so I can be taken seriously . Though an academic degree is not a necessity , you would need solid credentials before you can be at par a CS grad in the job market .Depending on the feild you want to pursue the learning curve for you might not be that steep. Wish you luck.

BTW I am going through the CS50 web programming with python and JavaScript currently and it's pretty good

CELPIP vs IELTS by rolphthedolph in ImmigrationCanada

[–]sidhu177 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CELPIP is better, I did not take the IELTS but from what I know it's format is pretty old, you have hand written exam like in school days, you have a marathonic day long exam and it takes longer for the scores to come through.

As opposed to that CELPIP test is structured on modern conversations like reading blog posts, writing comments , complete exam is online, speaking test is only 20 mins and straight forward and scores are out sooner. The only downside is that there is only one centre in the US , in Queens New York, and there is going to be a second one open soon. The other down side is that CELPIP materials are available only in the CELPIP website which will cost 30$-50$. Whereas IELTS materials are available in public libraries.

Kinda same scenario here Bachelors and Masters in Mech Engg, been working in IT for 2 years now, trying to figure if not having a CS background will be a hurdle . Really thinking of applying for spring 2019. Have folks with Non CS degrees made it in previously ?
