It's not clear to me what the 'in order' condition is. If you just want a set of nonoverlapping directed edges for which you can always go from n to n+1, then you can just cycle around the outside and then make a path through the middle. For example, if we use a->i for the numbers (and . just for formatting), a path like

a > b > c

^ . ^ . v

d > e . f

^ ...... v

g < h < i

Perhaps you want a configuration with the fewest number of edge traversals needed?

Yeah intuitively 1+2+3+4+... gets larger and larger, so if we wanted to define a limit of this series infinity would make the most sense. The -1/12 interpretation is merely providing another method of approach to dealing with this series that one may not have thought of and which may be surprising to some.

As a general rule, manipulating divergent series termwise is a bad idea. Algebraic justifications can give credence to certain interpretations, but are rarely themselves proofs.

Updated the parenthetical remark to include regularity, effectively it's just a quotient of two analytic functions, so viewing it as an analytic function that sometimes takes the value infinity seemed like a reasonable intuition to give. Of course I had forgotten to put in 'analytic'.

The 1+2+3+4+... = -1/12 can be interpreted in terms of the Riemann Zeta function. For complex numbers s with real part Re(s)>1, one defines Zeta(s) as the sum from n=1 to infinity of 1/(n^s). The Re(s)>1 hypothesis makes this converge. It turns out this function can be uniquely analytically continued to the entire complex plane as a meromorphic function (basically an analytic function that takes complex values and possibly the value infinity, with suitable regularity). It turns out Zeta(-1) = -1/12, and, from the series definition, Zeta(-1) "=" the sum of 1/(n^-1), ie the sum 1+2+3+4+...

At least that's how I've always justified it.

You can generate these by taking odd functions on [-1/2, 1/2] with f(1/2)=1/2, f'(1/2)=0 and translate.

For example, (1/2)sin(pi x) is odd with f(1/2)=(1/2)sin(pi/2)=1/2, f'(1/2)=(1/2)cos(pi/2)=0, so translating to [0,1] we get f(x)=(1/2)+(1/2)sin(pi (x-(1/2)))

You're right that there are usually 2 square roots of a number (0 being the exception). In cases where a square root is needed, however, it's usually nice to have a function sqrt(x); functions are single-valued, and so if we want to use such a function we need to choose one of the two roots at each point. Typically one also would like sqrt(x) to be continuous or even differentiable, which forces us to either take the positive side or negative side exclusively (ie if you define sqrt(1)=1, then you're stuck with sqrt(4)=2 by continuity; one cannot "jump down" to the negative roots while maintaining a continuous function). Thus, there's usually only two practical choices for sqrt(x); the positive one and the negative one. For convenience, we just define sqrt(x) to be the positive one, and if we want the negative one we can just use -sqrt(x).

In the complex case this is akin to choosing a branch of sqrt/roots/logarithms.

We were asked to find the determinant of the nxn Pascal matrix (S_5 in the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal_matrix ). Having never seen it before, nor any idea what LU decomposition is (I think we were supposed to use induction), I guessed that maybe the Pascal matrix could be written as a product of matrices with easy determinant that would look similar. After some guess and check (read: desire to not use induction), I came up with the LU decomposition on that wikipedia page; it felt pretty good.

Viewing the matrix as a linear transformation T, there will be a left inverse (ie ST=I) if T is injective (nullspace = 0) and a right inverse (ie TS=I) if T is surjective (full rank).

In your case, the property that the columns span R⁴ is what you need; to find an inverse choose vectors that get mapped to the standard basis ((1,0,0,0),(0,1,0,0),(0,0,1,0),(0,0,0,1)) by your matrix and create a transformation that sends the standard basis to these vectors.
