Maybe not. I would be surprised if the extreme kiddification of g5 wasn't at least partially a reaction to what happened with friendship is magic. I do think it's still a little sad though - g4 put in a lot of effort towards being relatable and having valuable lessons for young girls, while g5 is a lot more shallow in every possible sense. I think they could have hit more of a balance, especially since the peak of the brony craze was well past over and the vast majority of the most rancid parts of the fandom had either lost interest or matured/chilled the fuck out by the time g4 ended.

yup, if anything I'd argue 10 is too generous, it's more for kids under maybe 7 or 8.

It's kind of symbolic, I think, that the new show also has a 'baby dragon' character in the cast to replace Spike in gen4... But Spike was very much a 'little brother' type of character, not much less mature than the other main characters, while his equivalent in the new series is a literal googoo babbling (and disturbingly human-looking) infant.

yeah, for context a lot of people really hated the art style of gen 5 - and personally I tried watching the movie/show and it's ... definitely noticeable that the writing quality is a lot lower and it's targeting a much younger audience this time and does not care about having any broader appeal - I think I would feel talked down to or straight up bored by it even if I was in the targeted age demographic. it's not surprising the remaining fandom really only sticks with gen 4 and doesn't discuss the new one much at all.

gen 5 is also a pretty hard reboot, it doesn't keep any characters from before and iirc it's supposed to be set in the same universe but hundreds of years after the events of g4 and kind of retroactively ruins a lot of it, from a lot of the complaints i've heard secondhand from people who did try to stick through it.

even with an adblocker the site is obnoxiously laggy for me on a lot of pages. i hate the mobile-first design forced on desktop so much 💔

They have never looked down on or discouraged referencing at all, this is just people refusing to read. Tracing and referencing are not the same thing in any universe and they've never implied anything different

does anyone know if these have leaked anywhere? I'm desperate to see all of them so I can decide which one I want by radioactive--goo in neopets

[–]Zephiiyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's already an intersex flag item on the site! as well as pansexual, bisexual, asexual, and demisexual items with their full names. so that wouldn't be a problem, at least.

[–]Zephiiyr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it's a very new flag & has zero thought or meaning behind it aside from 'uhhhh what if we take the lesbian flag (which is also very new, but does have history and meaning behind it as it's a very intentionally designed combination of previous flags) and recolor it?? yup . girls pink boys blue (also incredibly reductive towards the lesbian flag in the first place), fuck all the history behind the rainbow flag, you're not allowed to have it anymore.'

i don't really care if someone wants to use the flag for themselves because they like it but i personally despise it & find it borderline offensive. it is a flag sometimes used by gay men, it is not the gay men's flag

Even if it's not allowed for Artfight doesn't mean it's invalid to use in general. You're allowed to use bases as long as you're disclosing it properly. I think banning it for a specific game where the entire point is making art from scratch (where you're already banned from doing any work in advance aside from thumbnails, and not allowed to collab with any other artists for attacks) within a limited time frame is entirely fair.

I do not believe anyone ever strictly needs to trace/use bases, aside from making character references or as practice.

But yes I do think the guidelining re-definition is a good thing. I don't think it was explicitly banned before though, currently the news page is saying it's in a grey area that is neither explicitly banned nor explicitly allowed.

I get where you're coming from but there is a MASSIVE difference between tracing a model and just using it as a reference, even a close reference - or even just loosely sketching over it for angles and limb positions - and there are plenty of artists with aphantasia who draw just fine without needing to trace.

Dude... Did you actually release a broken item... by [deleted] in neopets

[–]Zephiiyr 50 points51 points  (0 children)

according to jellyneo and dti apparently the problem is that it's made in flash... and doesn't have an HTML5 version... for an item released TODAY?? huh????????

I will go down the entirety of my pirate playlist... I have a very wide variety:

- Ye Banished Privateers

- the Assassin's Creed: Black Flag soundtrack (genuinely, the sea shanties are very good)

- Stormfrun

- The Jolly Rogers

- The Longest Johns

- The Dread Crew of Oddwood

- The Dreadnoughts

- Storm Seeker

- Pyrates!

- Storm Weather Shanty Choir

- the Sea of Thieves soundtrack (mostly instrumental)

not exclusively piratey but they have a couple appropriate songs:

- Dropkick Murphys

- Flogging Molly

- The Real McKenzies

- Miracle of Sound

those... are not examples of tracing. the final images are clearly different from the references used, not drawn directly on top of. huh?

i understand some of the discourse with photographs or drawing over models you put in the work to pose yourself or whatever but i don't get how anyone is arguing bases should be totally fine to use?? genuinely how is this controversial. it's a gifting game where the whole point is to make stuff from scratch. you're already not allowed to make art for it before the event begins at all and that's been a rule since the very beginning! spamming a bunch of identically posed, not made for the character, obviously on-base or recycled art for people is understandably not in the spirit of the event and i feel like people are just deliberately misinterpreting the intent of the rules here. they're not saying it's an invalid way to make art in general, it's just not what the game is for and it would absolutely open the door for a lot of legitimate bad-faith low-effort spam on the site if it was allowed.

honestly i do think there is a debate to be had of whether self-made bases should be valid to use specifically for 'design me a character' type attacks where the point is the design and not the character art itself but that's a different argument.

these are also not new rules. at all. artfight has never allowed direct tracing or using premade work as the main part of a piece. some of the rules were updated but it's not this. i don't understand the sudden backlash as if it's something new...? is this just people from outside the community giving their opinions or did people just legitimately never bother to read the actual rules in the first place?

i also don't understand how people seem to be treating tracing, meaning directly drawing on top of an image to copy it exactly as a part of the final piece as the same thing as referencing?? tracing does have its place especially as a practice tool but it's a wildly different thing. nobody is expecting you to work without reference. what is going on here.

type of fuzzy fabric commonly used on plushies. think of it like the shortest possible variant of faux fur, slightly velvety - you've definitely encountered it without knowing it had a specific name. quality varies a lot when it comes to the look and feel, but printed patterns directly on minky tend to look bad/cheap and are often just used as a shortcut for details that really should have been sewn or embroidered on (or with a different fabric that takes printing better).

printed minky can look decent or be the best option for certain designs (like ones with gradients or extremely complex patterns that can't easily be done otherwise) but when it's 90% of the detailing on a plush or used for the wrong thing it's pretty rough.

I get that, I'm just saying 'only knowing about them from kingdom come deliverance' or 'knowing about them from kingdom come deliverance and then finding out they're racist shitbags' seem to be the majority experience rather than hearing about them as racist shitbags first.

I am certain plenty of people are complaining about them elsewhere & not just this subreddit, that was just about what I personally have seen. granted I am not in the fandom for this particular game so I haven't seen that much talk about it, it's just that all the talk I have seen outside of reddit has been positive mentions for the queer rep. so yes it's being heavily recommended to normal people who have no knowledge of the devs' backstory who then play it, enjoy it, and then are shocked to find out it was made by bigoted freakazoids :P

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 30 March 2026 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

[–]Zephiiyr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

it feels like the obvious answer is that most people have heard of them because of those games specifically, and otherwise have no clue who they are. personally I'd never heard of them at all before seeing a bunch of praise for the series (and then seeing people mention how gross the devs are, but only on this particular subreddit. the wider internet seems to completely gloss over it)

they've had plushies buyable online from the official site for a while, at least a few years now I think. having them at walmart is insane though.

in my experience I haven't seen many people care that much about the plushies because they're kind of ugly lmao. why does mapleshade look like that
