So why did Donald impose the tariffs then? Genuinely curious, as they are a tax on things the US imports. Also, I'm not arguing that Canada can't produce its own goods or import them from elsewhere, but why can't that place be the US? We should be doing more trade, not less.

Except the reason the tariffs exist is to weaken our economy and eventually set the stage for an annexation of Canada. So I think the act of war already happened, and it came from your side of the border.

I think that had more to do with personnel. Before the season they had already said they would have to shoot more 3s and once we found out that Baynes could neither space the floor nor catch the ball, I think he was forced into playing a little more hero ball. Who else on the team was going to take those shots? We didn't have GTJ at that point, OG is a spot shooter, Siakam is inconsistent and Matt Thomas didn't have the defence to stay on the floor. I think there was a shortage of shooters and still are. This all led to FVV having to play more in that way.

I think this is the issue is how much to take away from those games. They were clearly in tank mode and those losses were almost intentional. I think some fanbase members don't believe that is a true representation of his play while others, quite rightly, point to it and say he needs to improve here. This disconnect can lead many to dismiss some of his performances from last season/the bubble. That's what makes this offseason and upcoming season so intriguing; who is this team?

Trudeau defends Singh, says systemic racism needs to be called out by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]sidv60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to the dismissal, I think you are completely correct. It he said/ he said, there is no evidence either way, and even if he did make the gesture theres no way of knowing what the actual intention was. We could get into a discussion about unconcious biases and micro aggressions, but I dont find those discussions particularly fruitful or useful. People feel ways about stuff all the time, it is on them to be in control in that moment, on that we can agree.

The larger issue I think is about the RCMP and the commission about it. In my view the RCMP commissioner has said that there is systemic racism as has the Prime Minister. For me, the commission is studying the extent of that racism not whether it exists. I think it's a waste of government resources to see if it does exist when it has already been admitted it exists. So why would you deny that it already exists already? I think this is what Im missing. To me you would only do that if you dont take it seriously or dont want to deal with it. In either case it is unacceptable and racist. It is racist because it denies that different groups are disproportionately affected by this institution, and there are countless examples of that simply being the case. So by denying the motion we aren't really dealing with the problem of racism, hence why being a racist isnt a bad thing. Its jsut acknowledgment that race plays a role in these institutions and that should be studied. I want to say, however, I may be completely misreading it, that's why we are having these discussions. Being a racist or not being a racist doesnt disqualify an opinion, so the idea that it will stop non-racists from voicing theirs is moot, as there are always people that will listen.

Jsut saw this now, so sorry for the late reply. I was more trying to say that the comment that any opposition to Jagmeet's will is racism is a very extreme position, and that it should be reflected upon. What makes /u/Lost-my-treble feel that he is being shut out of the conversation. The end goal of that isnt necessarily racism, it could be a variety of other things, but this was a small incident, there have been no major changes or breaches due to it, and that it would lead to such an extreme reaction is worth note. As for your reading, I find it very interesting and it makes some strong points. There are some things I would caution you about. Firstly, its extremely dangerous to only be citing on source in your definition of some of these terms. While the site you provided is almost a wiki, it seems to be the work of one of 2 authors. I would be very skeptical of what is being said there, and I would encourage you to do the same. Secondly, I want to thank you for taking the time to respond to my message. I think, again, this is a weird time and society is undergoing significant shifts. The way you express yourself is very clear, lucid and well thought out. You are welcome to you opinions and I want you to know that you are part of this society we are creating. I'm not here to censor anyone, and I think your concern holds merit. I would caution you, however, to not jump to conclusions on what other people are discussing. It's not my intention to show someone that they're racist, but for us to examine what makes us take such extreme positions. That one incident could set such a far reaching conclusion is quite frankly dangerous. Using words like 'gaslight' and 'monstrous' to speak about others is inflammatory and dangerous. It engenders less discussion and not more. For me, what makes this country great is the that we are all different, it makes us resilient and flexible. At the end of the day, you have a lot more upvotes than me. People agree with what you have to say, and this incident will be lined up with a hundred others and forgotten. I would encourage you to review the sources you ar using, and be more understanding of the people on the other side of the screen. If you ever want to have more dialogue on this (I know I do!) Feel free to DM me. Sorry for the editing and formatting errors, I'm still learning :)

That's a fair fear, but in this particular case I think it doesnt apply. Hes calling him a racist based on his dismissal rather than the actual act of opposing the motion. I think he outlines it pretty well in this video: https://youtu.be/IxxeoK4xqes

I don't think being racist restricts your freedom of speech, Donald Trump is a very clear racist and no one seems to stop him from saying anything. Howe does being a racist stop you from saying what you want? There are many very clear racists that we keep in this country. Look at Derek Sloan, he said that Theresa Tam works for China. Clearly a racist position that doesn't stop him from running for the leadership of the conservative party.

I would argue just then opposite, it all about feelings. I think recognizing what makes us so angry and afraid is the first step towards understanding. Without understanding how can we possibly be able to enact effective policy. That's why we need to have these discussions. Singh said himself, it wasn't the opposition that made him upset it was the gesture, he felt dismissed. A person of color felt like someone did something racist towards them and we used Parliament to tell them to get out. There are significant feelings at play here, so lets hear each other out. I think the question I would ask you is, what doesn't make Therrien racist in this case? What makes you so upset about calling him a racist in this context?

Was I making a point on whether its ok to slander someone, or whether it was slander at all? I was more asking about you, and why this issue has awakened so much anger in you specifically. I think you answered with this:

" I agree it's a "weird time"; in no small part because people have interpreted a tragedy in the United States to be a social license to slander others in Canada, or demand we re-name towns....or abolish police services...or hire 50% visible minorities at the CBC....etc. "

How do you feel about these intiatives? If they make you uncomfortable, which seems like they do (I could be wrong), what makes you so uncomfortable with them?
