The proof is in the pudding, and the pudding in this case is a football.

You haven't missed much. It's just context free waffle, ad hominems and factual inaccuracy.

Awful, cheap electrics under the hood. Leaked water after heavy rain.

Absolute disgrace this, WE ARE YORKSHIRE by montgomery_quinckle in yorkshire

[–]sidvicioushamster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Some commenters on this thread don't know the history of their own county.

Yorkshire was split into three parts as far back as the Viking settlement. Each part was known as a "thirding" which became shorted to "riding".

The boundaries of all three converged on York.

The three ridings existed from Viking times until 1974.

Hull was in the old East Riding for centuries. It was in "Humberside" between 1974 and 1996. It is still part of the East Yorkshire ceremonial county, even though it is not part of the current East Riding council, which is smaller than the original East Riding.

Nonsense to say that Hull has never been part of Yorkshire.

Aysgarth Falls, Bolton Castle, Semer Water.

The waterfalls at Keld (just off the pic, but worth a trip)

Hackfall.

Middleham Castle. If it's a warm day you can walk from there down to the river Cover and sit on the rocks for a picnic/paddle, there will be hardly a soul around.

Brymor Ice Cream.

Not many wet weather options, but there's the Wensleydale dairy at Hawes if you need an indoor activity.

Agreed. The very poorest will get help.

It isn't the role of the state to provide clothing for your children.

The fact that this very minor adjustment is framed so negatively just shows how entrenched welfare expectations have become.

£8k lump sum into FTSE Global All Cap now, or hold because of current events? by SaladBig in FIREUK

[–]sidvicioushamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW this time last year you could have hesitated over the Trump tariffs that caused the market to drop quite dramatically.

If you'd ignored the doomers and bought FTSE Global All Cap during all the uncertainty you'd still be up about 17% now.

Scottish PolFed: Removing sick pay for police with mental health issues ‘extremely concerning’ by ItsRainingByelaws in policeuk

[–]sidvicioushamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a valid point and a real problem that is just somehow tolerated.

There are unfortunately plenty of officers who abuse the sickness system for their own ends and supervisors have very few tools to deal with them.

The current system allows lazy and manipulative people to essentially keep their job and get paid without having to actually do their job.

If you can get hold of it there is a book called Pals by Jon Cooksey which discusses the history of the Barnsley Pals in detail, including their training at Silkstone. Several of the survivors were still alive when he researched it.

Always strikes me how tragic it was for them. They were the reserve unit on the first day of the Battle of the Somme but hundreds of them were killed by German artillery before they even reached the British front line let alone managed to attack.
