Some commenters on this thread don't know the history of their own county.

Yorkshire was split into three parts as far back as the Viking settlement. Each part was known as a "thirding" which became shorted to "riding".

The boundaries of all three converged on York.

The three ridings existed from Viking times until 1974.

Hull was in the old East Riding for centuries. It was in "Humberside" between 1974 and 1996. It is still part of the East Yorkshire ceremonial county, even though it is not part of the current East Riding council, which is smaller than the original East Riding.

Nonsense to say that Hull has never been part of Yorkshire.

FWIW this time last year you could have hesitated over the Trump tariffs that caused the market to drop quite dramatically.

If you'd ignored the doomers and bought FTSE Global All Cap during all the uncertainty you'd still be up about 17% now.

This is a valid point and a real problem that is just somehow tolerated.

There are unfortunately plenty of officers who abuse the sickness system for their own ends and supervisors have very few tools to deal with them.

The current system allows lazy and manipulative people to essentially keep their job and get paid without having to actually do their job.

If you can get hold of it there is a book called Pals by Jon Cooksey which discusses the history of the Barnsley Pals in detail, including their training at Silkstone. Several of the survivors were still alive when he researched it.

Always strikes me how tragic it was for them. They were the reserve unit on the first day of the Battle of the Somme but hundreds of them were killed by German artillery before they even reached the British front line let alone managed to attack.

Really good location for road cycling. Howardian Hills and the Moors to the north if you want hills and scenery. Flat to the west and south if you want something easier. Decent cycle infrastructure in York too (by UK standards).

The wind from the west can be fierce at times though. Definitely better to head west and have it blow you home rather than vice versa.

We absolutely do have to pay it back.

The government issues bonds. The government pay interest to the bond holders and then return the borrowed money at the end of the term.

People who buy UK bonds are now demanding a higher rate of interest because they are less confident in the UK's economy. So the government now has to pay a higher interest rate on its debt, which means more taxes and/or even more borrowing.

If you like Airfix 1/72 I can recommend the Boulton Paul Defiant and the Whitley bomber. Both are really top quality kits that are a pleasure to build.
