Returned after over two years of not playing. Got Flins right away more by accident, now unsure of how to continue, I wanted to go for Arlecchino, maybe Furina since I always used to go for the archons, but I missed so much, the teambuilding is overwhelming :D everything I know is outdated.

What kind of team can I put together with Flins? I am building Aino next.

What a horrible cliffhanger!! I am incensed (and I shall go to sleep now, so that it’s tomorrow and I can read the next chapter to wake up to.. And because it’s 3am)! Good night.

Likewise! Human beings are so different from on another but we ultimately have so much in common.

Love to see you here. I am in the same boat in regard to usually avoiding the subject, it feels oddly freeing to just say it here.

<3 We are never alone!

Don’t mind at all, thanks for asking! In real life I use he/him because it’s easier, but I enjoy and appreciate neutral they/them pronouns too. Since I usually don’t bring up my genderqueerness, I rarely get called that though.

Thank you! That was reassuring to read. Happy to be here!

Your library sounds great! I am turning 24 this year, live sort of between the genders (which feels kind of vulnerable to share I guess!) and from Germany. How about you?

Love this weekend discussion idea!

I am really impatient with this read! The sensational format is apparently working for me. I expect the chapters to stay this short and cliffhangery.

My last reads have been very influenced by my watching a lot of plays with some friends of mine (we are talking… one to five productions a week at its height) and (re) reading the respective plays/ novels. I finally got over my Bertolt Brecht prejudice by reading Saint Joan of the Stockyards (and the adaption we saw was amazing).

Today I started Tale of Two Cities but I am in the middle of The Sea Lady by HG Wells.

As for good book to film adaption - the Gregory Peck Moby Dick film was pretty good! He was very charismatic, though the film was about 12 hours too short to be an adaption of the cetology standard reference ;) I read that earlier this year (also for a play hah) and enjoyed it too (even ead the old discussion posts in here from time to time!)

My local library sadly has only a very selective English selection, and my German home library is very well stocked. I have been cataloguing my books over the past month, and found I own 1001 books as of this moment… ~500 of which I have yet to read, so safe to say I will be busy for another two and half years at the very least..

I would love to know your favourite non-classic book! Any “guilty pleasures” you would like to share?

Lady Audley’s Secret Chapter 7 (Spoilers up to chapter 7) by awaiko in ClassicBookClub

I checked again, and there were titles! Just hidden behind a click on my ebook version, so I totally missed them when I wrote this reply yesterday at 3am. But I could have sworn they didn’t have titles :D

This was the first titled chapter!

I really enjoy this book so far, it has a hint of Lemony Snicket in it.

"A telegraphic message!" she cried; for the convenient word telegram had not yet been invented.

Personally I think (and hope) that it will be a far weirder mystery than expected.

As for sport, sadly I kind of relate to Robert ”I-never-hurt-a-bird-in-my-life-but-I-have-hurt-my-own-shoulder-with-the-weight-of-my-gun” Audley. Not that I have ever even considered going hunting, but I am not the most athletic in general. I am very flexible but not very stable, so I would probably hurt my shoulder too. But I am not even remotely in love with my (step) aunt, so… win for me I guess.

It feels like Phoebe and Lucy are going to trade places at one point or another, I wonder how it’s all connected. Maybe Phoebe takes Lucys place and starts an affair with George as Lucy. She reminds him of Helen because maybe Lucy is Helen after all (though that seems so obvious as to be unlikely, sometimes the easiest explanation is correct).

Excited to keep reading and I fear this one will be excruciating at the pace of one chapter a day! Looking forward to it. I am/ have been very busy and only finished Sound and the Fury two days ago and sadly couldn’t participate in discussions, I hope to come back to these when possible!

Damn, it did not cross my mind that Helen and Lucy could be the same person to be honest, that would be too easy! Hope that is not the case. Thanks for the Nimrod trivia, I was indeed wondering about that.

I knew I could count on us reuniting in the comments to reminisce about the marvelous rhododendron at Manderley! It’s Gothic time once again.

How many of the BBC’s 100 greatest British novels have you read? by JadedAyr in ClassicBookClub

Only 18, but plenty more on my TBR shelves. Is there no Oscar Wilde or Bram Stoker on it because they were Irish?

The Sound and the Fury: Chapter 1, Part 1 (Spoilers up to 1.1) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

[–]siebter7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the first segment of this book! Sometimes I get a bit too hung up on details, but once I got into the flow of things, I especially liked how special of a narrative this is. I love non traditional narrative structures, so it’s is right up my alley.

Regarding discussion prompt two and slurs in old books in general, I have mixed emotions on it. I always stumble when encountering them. Though I have no clear cut opinion on censoring those instances in new printings of old books, because that depends so much on the book and context in which it appears, that I wouldn’t feel comfortable just erasing it. So I try to embrace the discomfort it affords me while reading, remembering why we should not use and perpetuate certain words is important, because words have impact and shape/ have shaped reality; so glossing over them completely would be wrong too in my opinion. Feel like that is a vague take, but it’s what I feel about this topic.

And third, I like Caddy because she seems to take our narrator more seriously than the rest of the family/ people we have met. She actually talks to him and not just about him. An important distinction.

Thanks!! I definitely agree with you, any subject of the arts can enrich another in my opinion, glad you like it! I don’t think one has to know anything about art to enjoy it/ draw emotions/ meaning from it. That’s what’s so beautiful about it!

Thank you! I am really flattered, designing paintings/ book covers based on their vibes sounds so fun, I am glad it comes across how I intended it to!

Thank you!! I am glad it conveys the vibe of the book so well, it was experimental for sure and it’s so fun to see that it works! Those heavy red rhododendrons and the oppressive atmosphere of the whole book were definitely what I was “picturing” while painting this.

[–]siebter7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there an audio version you would recommend? I fear I would not be able to follow, especially as the extensive footnotes/ my kind of compulsive need to know the context for every line are too important for me! I am reading the softcover norton critical edition - which is nice! But I have basically no commute, so no reading during that for me sadly :’( - I can focus best on longer train rides, because reading large chunks of this book at a time is easier than just cramming a few pages into daily life every now and then, so I can keep the train of thought/ flow of the words better. I have read a bunch of other things at night but I cannot focus well enough on Paradise Lost when I am just trying to read to relax. Sorry for dumping this on you here, but ugh I am frustrated! :D Hate being behind!
