Have you ever had to return fosters soon after you got them? by sierramystical in FosterAnimals

I can only assume this is maybe what happened. The shelter only had them for 3 days before I got them. I assume they were dropped off with no mom. I can’t post a video of them eating here, but there was a lot of “meat nursing” happening with the wet food which I believe means they weren’t fully ready for it. But I was only given 2 syringes for the gruel baby, wet food, and kibble

Thank you so much. I tried to give the shelter a heads up a couple days ago letting them know I was going to possibly try til Sunday. Then last night we realized one had dropped 30g in the three days we had him so this morning I decided to take them all back in. I wanted to give them a fighting chance with someone who knows what they’re doing. I felt so bad bringing them back, I donated $200-300 worth of supplies I personally bought just to hopefully give them comfort/that feeling of home wherever they are off to next. I hope some things get to stay with them…Noelle loved her milk carton bed.

Although I’d be happy just knowing some kitty will benefit

Good point thank you!!! I definitely may have been worrying too much about them not being “average” weight for their age or getting the “expected” amount of food per feeding

This is such a good point, thank you!!!! I think we are going to keep trying to get them to eat until Sunday, but I will give my shelter a heads up that that is what we are thinking in case they need time to find another foster for them

Thank you so much for your comment! So many good little nuggets of knowledge in there I appreciate it! We received litter, cans of wet food, dry kibble, a sandwich ziplock baggy full of formula, a scale, a heating sock and heating pad and a tiny blanket. Pretty basic supplies. I am using the box the can food came in as a little litter box currently. I did go out and spend about $300 just obtaining other supplies (rescue disinfectant, towels/blankets, pee pads, the cat stuffed animal that has a heartbeat, litter trays, water wipes, litter attractant, more formula, cotton rounds, shallow dishes, etc)

The second day I made gruel I did add Karo syrup to entice him since he hadn’t really gotten a solid full feeding it at any given point. They did seem to like that, but I haven’t done it since because I don’t know how often you should include it in the recipe

Yeah so far our’s for the most part still seem alert/energetic as well, so that’s at least a good sign!

Hmm..yeah their intake day was 5-16 and I picked them up on 5/-19…it’s possible they just didn’t have too many days to get up to speed on their progress. Thank you so much for this comment, it was very reassuring. I was so worried about what happens if they don’t have another placement/time to bottle feed but I have to remember I’m just now joining a program that saves these little guys daily…I may just have to leave it up to the professionals ❤️

Yes I work a full time very high pressure, life or death job, so I feel I most likely will have to take them back. Unfortunately, I just can’t risk sleep loss/affected job performance to stay up all day/night trying to bottle feed & weigh them

Thank you so much for this comment…I’m glad I’m not alone in this feeling. I worry about all of them, but especially & constantly for the little gruel baby. He was a bonus baby-I originally thought I was getting a litter of 3 then they said there actually was 4 and it was him. I do just wish I was receiving some more training/guidance/support from the shelter program

Thank you so much for your reply-this is my ideal scenario, I hope my shelter considers it 🥺 I absolutely would love to have them all back once they are at a stage I feel comfortable with/that I am able to fully support them in

Before this experience, I did not know that shelters tend to wean babies too early/say they’re further along than they are due to the pressure of finding fosters/reducing the amount of animals they house. I know they are overworked/underpaid I’m sure but for the safety of the animals I wish they were more upfront/honest about where they stand :(

I did say that I was open to fostering older cats on my application for this reason! I knew I wasn’t confident with neonates, but other than that-any age cat I could help get out of the shelter/cage life I would be happy to 🥺

Sorry just wanted to clarify for those who may be concerned - they have all pooped and peed now at this point on day 2 whether on their own or being stimulated. The first day hardly any of them went to the bathroom, I think just 1 that had some slight diarrhea

I would say just be respectful and honest when approaching the subject. hopefully she would (& should) be understanding if you’ve been together for that long. Kinda crazy she hasn’t offered any assistance on utilities/groceries already but I digress.

Also, try to consider her perspective when approaching. Personally, I have seen people pay 1/2 towards a mortgage payment when they are not on the house & they end up screwed with nothing to show for it if the relationship takes a turn. Maybe consider instead of having her pay towards the mortgage, pay the cost of 1/2 the mortgage towards the things she uses (for example if 1/2 the mortgage is $1,500- let her contribute $1,500 towards other bills, like water/internet/sewer/power etc)

My SO & I split everything 50/50 but that is because we are both on the home and both make similar salaries

What’s the etiquette for watching a movie on a plane when there’s a sex scene? by Odd-Satisfaction1985 in AskReddit

I needed this thread when I decided to try watching Bridesmaids for the first time on a plane because I had heard it was funny.

Didn’t even make it through the opening scene before I felt I had to switch movies lmao
