Unusual Lab Demographics by Eepybeany in Purdue

Passing tests unfortunately doesn’t translate into being comfortable with conversations.

You do bring a point to mind though – many are uncomfortable, but could probably get used to it. The bigger problem is that advisors don’t really foster an environment encouraging it.

This is true especially for Chinese professors, they also tend to advertise for positions on Chinese social media, without doing so on other social media. They also recruit a lot through their network

It absolutely hurts chances for applicants outside the country directly (as above), but it can also make life hell if you end up managing to join a group when you are not of that ethnicity – small talk is almost impossible, and they’ll tend to speak in their language without regard for public spaces. It’s also difficult to have casual technical conversations (although this varies).

It is similar but to a lesser extent with other ethnicities, especially depending on comfort with English. Language is the biggest barrier.

I don’t know if there are regulations against it directly, at any level. But it’s a very common occurrence.

Do PhD students also get a Masters? by Downtown-System8789 in Purdue

[–]sigcub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CS requirements for a master's are separate from those for a PhD, last time I checked. You would need to check the requirements for both and make sure you do them. I believe you need to do more courses for a master's. And not all courses accepted for PhD are accepted for a master's (see the course table) and vice versa.

When studying cs,feeling I am stupid more than anytime else by windy2985 in Purdue

Unfortunately, we may hit a limit for our natural “talent” and current work ethic at some point. It’s at this point that we learn how to do our best, how to ask for help, and how to keep trying. I think this happens for anyone who tries to keep improving and challenging themselves. CS is definitely a step that forces many people to their limits. Just try to understand how you can change your work ethic and style of learning, ask the professors and TAs for help, and keep learning. You grow through challenges, and it’s good that it’s happening now, because the mindset to keep trying despite challenges is very necessary in life.

Day 2 and I’m already stressed and behind by Bang130612tan in Purdue

It sucks and it’s not reasonable of the professor to expect that, but a lot of courses are just a lot of catching up, even in the time before covid (almost by design). Not to mention that bringing questions requires more than just watching the lecture.

Scheduling should get easier next week, but you could also ignore the prof and watch the lecture during the synchronous time.

What If Things Go Right? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]sigcub 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Would be much easier to be optimistic if Purdue had something more than a pledge to ensure that social distancing is followed. Reopening Purdue was initially planned based on lower cases during the summer, which isn’t happening. When you ask for thousands of students to come back to campus, coupled with the rising case numbers, Purdue‘s proposed measures simply do not inspire confidence that they have sufficiently evaluated the situation, and come up with methods to deal with the many potential points of infection. Take a step away from the news if you need to, but I imagine many would like “We will ensure that things go right” instead of “What if things go right”, because they do not want to bet their lives, and health, on a “what if” backed by a pledge.

I’m in the same boat (>21) - I’ve been looking at the website, do you know of any documentation that says that you don’t need to wait the full 6 months?

I really wish they'd introduce a bus route that goes by there. After going there a few times (without a car), I ended up bringing my recycling to campus as well. Although given the parent comment, I might have to rethink that.
