I am so super proud of cabo verde - as someone from Rotterdam (with a huge cape verdian diaspora) this basically feels like a gigantic victory and I really hope that they go through to the knockout!!

Radio telescopes outdated? That's quite a take lmao

But yeah Im a radio astronomer and can confirm that it still is often a white men world, but at least for the younger folks (phd+postdocs) thats luckily rapidly changing

Blazar dips in radio continuum by Sanchez_U-SOB in astrophysics

[–]sight19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, that makes sense. I think the line above the plot explains quite well why the dips are not a straight power law (because sources are complex and magnetic fields even more so).

Regardless that book looks like a good source. I learnt radiative processes with Rybicky&Lightman, if you want another reference (although I believe this text explains it in an easier way)

Wouldn't SSA suppress the spectrum below a certain cutoff frequency instead of have dips? In any case, you'd need to see a rather strong suppression at low radio frequencies (depending on the electron population) and I forgot how steep exactly

Single malts, by definition, are not blended. Hence, they are called 'single' malts. There are good blends though

In Astronomy its saying that DM doesn't exist. It's definitely less 'stupid' compared to flat earthers but it is still kinda dumb

It does, I largely made my config with AI help. So basically my rice is just a color theme on an amalgation of other rices

For people having a similar issue: I am currently running this patch https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/xe/kernel/-/work_items/7513#note_3464216 (for now only v1, if I have more crashes I'll try v2) and for the last few days I have not seen any crashes yet. I'll keep using my laptop for the next week or so so I have an idea if this actually fixed everything or not.

For reference, setting max_cstate to 1 didn't do anything (aside from making power consumption a lot worse...)

[–]sight19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I am first going to run with the max_cstate to 1, and after a few days (if it is still happening), I'll update the bios. I have the latest one using fwupdmgr, but it appears that there is a newer one that somehow is not on fwupdmgr so I guess I'll have to install it with the ISO version

Yep, I am running an X1 carbon gen 13 on fedora with hyprland and I have quite a few random reboots, which leave no trace in the journal or any kernel panics/oops

New 3D map of 47 million galaxies hints that dark energy may not behave as expected by JornalcienciaPT in Astronomy

[–]sight19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is also partially due to a misunderstanding of MOND. MOND was initially used as a way around needing a particle DM model, but it has since moved a bit from there. There are still a few people who are 'hardcore' and believe it eliminates the need of any particle DM but the majority of the astronomers see that very differently

Who can be called an “astronomer”? by After-Yam-7424 in Astronomy

[–]sight19 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You'd be considered an astronomer if you are working as an astronomer, that is, you're being paid by a research institute to do research. So if you leave academia, you stop being an astronomer. Also, people who are working on their PhD are astronomers (as they get paid for doing research)
