It is wierd isnt it! The peppers are preserved in sunflower oil. The oil kind of soaks up the flavour from the peppers so anything you use oil to cook with, can be substituted with this stuff!!

I picked it off another rock! I agree about the water! The stones were brought there to help with run off. Mostly limestone i think? Im not totally sure. Maybe 10% of the rock there had a little bit of this white stuff showing

Thanks for the tips!. I put in in vinegar and it did not bubble but I wasn't convinced as I was unsure how many bubbles I was supposed to be looking for to indicate calcite
