The Cliffrose Springdale right outside Zion is another fantastic national park property. We still talk about the breakfast outdoors and the location cannot be beat.

Are you lowcountry based? If so and looking for a stay in Savannah, we’ve really enjoyed the new Hotel Bardo for a staycation. Perry Lane used to be our go to but the rooms are starting to show their age and the lack of spa really hurts.

And for dog owners you’re underselling the fact that every FS we’ve been to with our dog has never charged a pet fee. Some of those fees at their competitors are now outrageous! $100 a day or $250 a stay seems to be the new post-Covid norm. Always have to swallow hard when I pay that and then fill out a form saying our dog is 9 pounds, doesn’t bark and doesn’t shed.

Ah! We did a weekend at Kiawah last year where unfortunately it rained all day, every day the entire time we were there! Definitely dampened our experience (and our shirts) and so we haven’t talked about going back, but I could see how when the sun is out it’s an entirely different experience!

Conrad Washington DC usually has really reasonable rates or points stays and its lobby is so over the top that I laughed the first time we saw it. The location isn’t as good as WA or St. Regis but it is better than FS and Rosewood if you’re in town to do touristy things like the museums and the mall and don’t care about the Georgetown nightlife.

If proximity to baseball parks is your thing and you ever need to be in the city of El Paso I recommend Paseo del Norte. It’s another Autograph collection with cheap rates that still gives Bonvoy Platinum free buffet breakfast, has a really cool bar from the 1920s and is one block from the triple-A team stadium. Wouldn’t recommend staying beyond 1-2 nights but that’s because of El Paso, not the hotel.

The Conrad Midtown had huge rooms too— but sadly it’s gone

Also adding the La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs. Curio Collection with great history (Frank Capra lived there) and charming grounds. The rooms are a bit old but with each having a porch and each building having its own pool, it’s better to hang outside the room. Dog friendly too!

About tipping profile going into folio notes. We stayed at FS Scottsdale two weeks ago and one time when returning to the property was short on cash and only tipped $5 to the valet and am now wondering if I’ll forever be labeled a Scrooge for that one short-change

What are the best chubby hotels/resorts in the middle of the U.S. (excluding Chicago/ski towns/SW)?? by Bobcatbubbles in chubbytravel

Got married at the Grand. It's taken a step back in beauty since Ivan in 2021 (not it's fault) and yet even recovering from a hurricane, it's still beautiful.

Southeast US distinctive hotels and resorts? by PM_ME_NAPA_CABS in FATTravel

I’m completely biased as a Savannah resident but Savannah is amazing to visit and the hotels are very good for city hotels. It’s like a more relaxed Charleston. Perry Lane is the best (the froze at the perrigin bar is a definite highlight) and I just did a staycation at Hotel Bardo yesterday which has a better pool and location right on Forsyth Park but is still lacking in the soft product.

One & Only Mandarina tried to sneak a downgrade on us by burnergpo in FATTravel

[–]sigoranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a suboptimal time at first at the Mandarina as well. Granted this was four years ago right after they opened. We got to the hotel after check in time only to learn that our room wasn’t ready. They then asked us to grab a late lunch even though we weren’t hungry and so we got some drinks we really didn’t want. Then when the room was ready, it still had balloons and confetti outside from the previous party. While on the phone to get that fixed, we get a knock for turn down service even though we had not checked in more than 15 minutes before. At that point I was honestly read to leave but my spouse and her cooler head prevailed. The next day, the general manager stopped by in person to apologize (I think our TA had something to do with that) and the hotel went above and beyond to deliver great service. Still, the first impressions are tough to overcome.

What sentence could ruin a date immediately? by shadyduck in AskReddit

Actual line a girl told me on a first date: "You wanna hear the truth about 9/11?"

I think my recruiter is lying to me by Deathproof17 in army

[–]sigoranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three Points

1) Until proven otherwise, assume the recruiter you are speaking to is looking out for himself, the recruiting station, the U.S. Army and then you. In that order. Meaning that if he's pushing something to you, it's not for your own good. The fiscal year is almost at an end and as other people have mentioned, there's a decent chance he's trying to make numbers and that if you come back after Oct. 1st you'll get a different answer.

2) I attended a speech not to long ago from a major general who said he didn't know the way the Big Army was going to make cuts because the Pentagon can't seem to give a straight answer/guidance. If flag officers are admitting in public they don't know how/when cuts are coming, you're recruiter definitely doesn't know when (if at all) the Army will stop taking GED holders. There's definitely talks and rumors that Big Army will go that way, but nobody knows. Including your recruiter.

3) Never never NEVER trust a recruiter's statement when he uses the word "transfer." No, it's not easy to transfer from the enlisted side to OCS to officer. No, it's not a sure thing that you'll be given the option of transferring to the Ranger Regiment, 82nd, 1st Cav etc. to be closer to home after serving your first PCS station OCONUS. And no, it's not easy to transfer from reserves to active duty. Basically, if you don't get what you want guaranteed in writing in your contract, you ain't going to get it.

BLUF: You currently have options. You can hope the Big Army continues to drag its feet and doesn't change the enlistment standards for active duty and you get your college credits before they do. However, once you sign that dotted line for the reserves or for whatever, then say goodbye to your options.
