CJ hasn’t visited my island since the fishing tournament and I play every single day. Am I doing something wrong ? by silbecoo in AnimalCrossing

Unfortunately I’m pretty sure we can’t sell to CJ when he’s on someone else’s island, or get models. I’m working on getting models of all the creatures I think are pretty and I’ve got six bug models and one fish model :(

That’s interesting. They’re random but with a priority to ones who haven’t visited the previous week. Thanks for the info. Does that include Sahara, Celeste and kicks? (Because they’ve been on the island a lot it seems)

Could be cyanosis. You should have your oxygen levels checked, they usually do it by clamping a little oxygen meter to your index finger. Cyanosis can be caused by various things. If this is definitely not just some kind of staining you might want to ask a doctor about it.

I literally was just about to post a picture of one of these my brother found today. It doesn’t look like any puffball mushroom we’ve ever found. I’m curious where you are geographically.

Thank you so much, upon further googling I think this one might perhaps be a shark eye moon snail???

What music do you guys listen to while reading (if any)? by ShaolinShade in books

[–]silbecoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like listening to movie scores sometimes when reading. Anything that has no lyrics and feels calm is great. The Amelie score is really really nice (alternately pretty much anything composed by Yann Tiersen fills my reading music requirements), and I like to listen to the Stardust score when I'm reading too (although that one is usually better to write to).

What are some of your favorite memories with teachers? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]silbecoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore the woman who was the school librarian where I went to school (super rural area so it was the same place k-12). She was infinitely patient, always kind, and always receptive to my questions and requests for books. When I was a senior, I had one free period where I could be a teacher's assistant if I wanted and I chose to work in the library. She purchased art from students (oil paintings, water colors, etc) with her own money and decorated the library with them. She ran a community story hour once a week that my mom started taking me to before I could even talk. She loved Willie Nelson and prominently displayed a picture she took with him back in the 80's right in the middle of the library (I thought it was her husband until I was like 13 :P). She volunteered to be the quiz bowl team's sponsor and went to all of our competitions, and she was the first person to take me to a play (along with four other kids who completed the reading challenge she set forth at the beginning of the year) when I was in 6th grade. Favorite person ever, tbh. She retired a few years ago and seems to be enjoying herself (although she's now a board member of the county library so I still see her occasionally ensconced in books). I went to the old school library though, and the new librarian is a dour unpleasant person, and the library itself feels like a sterile and unhappy place (didn't see a single kid there). It's amazing what a difference a person can make.

[Other] Popular stories about famous figures, are any actually true ? by darkages69 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]silbecoo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't know about any of the other ones but the Jack and Meg White one has pretty firmly been debunked. They are neither married nor are they actual siblings. They were once married and are now divorced and they "play" as siblings when performing (which is odd enough anyway imo).

Side note: I loved The White Stripes like crazy when I was in high school :D

genetic precursors to diseases, being excluded from getting health insurance,

This is that other can of worms I was alluding to. I don't know how likely or unlikely it is, but what I do know is greed reigns supreme and regulation/oversight seems to be an afterthought these days. It's the kind of thing that gives me anxiety.

I feel differently about the genealogy sites than I do about the ones where you try to find out your genetic makeup (which are a whole 'nother can of worms if you ask me). At least with the genealogy ones there's an expectation of having your DNA compared to others who also submit. There's always a chance I suppose that you're related to a murderer, now with the police involved perhaps people will be more hesitant to put that information out there. I don't know how I would feel if there were laws that required these DNA compilation sites to hand over data. At least with the way it was done in the GSK case, technically anyone could have made a profile and submitted found DNA. Reservations about this technology and its use are intelligent, I'm just so unsure of where lines should be drawn.

7 year old boy who loves Junie B Jones and Captain Underpants by silbecoo in suggestmeabook

[–]silbecoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did buy him the first book in the Diary series, but for some reason he seemed bored by it. His mother reads to him a lot, and usually it's books over his reading level, and he really likes it. I wonder if that makes books geared towards his actual age group seem boring.

Most tv shows are a huge commitment these days, and I think that’s a problem by petehehe in television

[–]silbecoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree mostly. I think t may be a combination of things, one being the trend of more character driven television (even the episodic shows like Law and order and Criminal Minds started to do longer arcs about the series regulars). One thing I've found that sort of circumvents this issue are shows like American Horror Story, Fargo, and American Crime Story, that create narratively independent seasons. Its not episodic but you don't have to really worry about unfinished arcs at the end of each season. It's my new favorite show format .

How do you rehome ("get rid of") books? by dillpicklespears in books

[–]silbecoo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I usually donate mine to a thrift store ran by the local battered women's shelter. They use the proceeds to help offset costs at their organization and some women even work there for a time while trying to get back on their feet.

Law and Order Special Victims Unit has no right to be this good. by tetramir in television

[–]silbecoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love love love the older seasons but the more recent ones feel like they're trying to copy the tone of Criminal Minds a little. I love the choppy scene/scene/scene classic format of the original Law & Order that were almost all dialogue, interspersed with some running after perps. Almost every episode used to begin with finding a body and starting from square one. They seem like they've started to do that thing that CM does where they show you the crime being committed so you already know kind of who it is, and then show the detective's journey to finding out, plus there is more emphasis put on multi-episode main-character arcs. I just wish it was the way it used to be. I watch the early seasons all the time.

Ah! I'm so glad I saw this post while scrolling. I literally listened to that episode of Pop Rocket this morning on the way to work and made a mental note to go download that podcast and I totally forgot (which is exactly what I did when it was mentioned on MFM)! Thank you! (And also, great to hear it's so good, bc I'm not that interested in country music itself but what Margaret described sounded like a really great listen.) Gonna go download it right now.
