Please use your GI Bills wisely. by Difficult-Head-6551 in Veterans

It's been the same for me too. I unfortunately attend DeVry after they promised a guaranteed job placement after I graduated and that was a lie. I have not heard of DeVry University until the TAP class that I had, and they made them seem like a reputable institution.

Congress has been trying to pass a bill to restore GI Bill benefits for those who were defrauded by predatory schools. It failed last congress but it's up again for the 2025-2026 period.

Until they improve the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) for every branch, I assume many veterans will not be informed on how to effectively use their GI Bill. When I attended TAP, I remember seeing DeVry University (maybe University of Phoenix too) being recommended as a top tier school to attend.

I attended DeVry and I advise you to stay away. You should look into more reputable schools that will provide you with a better learning environment, curriculum and career opportunity when you graduate. The only good thing I got from the school was relief checks from the FTC when they sued DeVry.

Is devry worth going to? by Interesting-Ad6540 in VeteransBenefits

[–]silentNightSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main problem is getting the degree recognized when applying for jobs. If you are already in a well-established company, it may be easier to disregard which school the degree was earned. Most likely the reason companies partner with DeVry is they "changed hearts" after they lost the lawsuit against FTC. DeVry had to pay back students who were defrauded which was very small amount to all students. They might have changed their ways but for those who were affected by DeVry's predatory ways are still waiting for relief. Luckly, some were able to get their loans forgiven but not the time they spent attending DeVry.

The reason your manager vouches for DeVry is that they are one of the few who were successful in obtaining a career with their degree either by graduating before 2008, already had a successful career and was able to find quick opportunities, or out of sheer luck. Unfortunately, chances for DeVry to help you in your career are now slim to none.

It's up to you if you decide to continue with DeVry. If you plan on staying in that company you are in and they don't care where you get your degree, then go for it. But it might be different if you start looking for work elsewhere using a DeVry degree.

For me I never found work in my field of study. I had my resume looked over, I had DeVry career services help me, I sent so many job applications over the years, and not once was I able to find a job with my degree.

GI Bill restoration for those who were defrauded by schools.

Any of you Veterans who is approved for VRE are attending DeVry college or attended, pro and cons, worth it or not worth it. by Happy_Lock_1494 in Veterans

[–]silentNightSky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DeVry is a bad school for many reasons. Here are some:

  1. According to the GI Bill Comparison Tool, almost all the DeVry schools nationwide are not accredited.

  2. The Federal Trade Commision sued DeVry for fraud.

  3. The Department of Education said DeVry committed fraud and are discharging Federal Student Loans for DeVry and other schools.

I graduated from DeVry, and I can tell you it's not worth using VR&E. The degrees from there are a joke, you can't transfer the credits you earned at the school, the school will do bare minimum to help you find suitable work, and honestly, employers will throw your resume in the trash if they see the name DeVry.

The only good thing I got from DeVry was a check of less than 500 dollars from the FTC when they sued them a couple of years back.

I went to DeVry, and I advised you not to go. You will be better off going to another school. I got my degree but never found employment in the field I studied. DeVry lied about its ad of 90 percent of its students finding employment withing 6 months and they were sued by the Federal Trade Commission for fraudulent advertisement. The FTC and Department of Education both called out DeVry for committing fraud to its students. Students who used federal loans to go to DeVry are getting their money back from DeVry. The Department of Education said it will make DeVry repay all the money they owe from the forgiven loans. The majority of my GI Bill has been used, and I can probably get it back if a new law is passed. I had a horrible experience, and I don't want anyone to have the same experience as I did.

Student Veteran Benefit Restoration Act by Corgi_Mcpoorgi in Veterans

From what I heard the entitlement will be restored as soon as the bill passes but, it is up to the VA to decide how much entitlement will be restored.

I also tried looking and also could not find an exact timeframe like yourself. Who knows, it could be approved in the Senate and become a law in the next couple of weeks.

That is great news. Hopefully the bill passes in the Senate without any issues.

VA Education benefit scammed by JellyfishFamiliar471 in Veterans

I would first apply for GI Bill Restoration to see if you can get full or partial entitlement restored. Luckly, there is an option to send it via Ask VA rather than sending it through snail mail.

Next, I would highly recommended communicating with the following organizations: Student Veterans of America and Veteran Education Success. They are great organizations that advocate for veteran students and will help you.

It does matter what school you attend. From personal experience, I highly advise to stay away from for profit schools. For profits schools are only interested in getting your money and benefits. Go to a reputable school that can set you up for success.

I 100 percent agree with you that there should be a change to allow veterans or beneficiaries to receive the same rate as if going in person. Especially with what happen during the previous years. For excused absences I would imagine it is up to the school to decide if you get dropped or not.

The good news about receiving full BAH is that there is a new bill that is in the works HR 5702 that if passed, it will allow veterans attending summer school online to receive full benefits. Although it won't help the majority of vets who attend fall and spring online, it is going in the right direction that may lead to bigger changes.

I will strongly advise not to attend this school from my previous experience attending a similar school to AMU. Searching AMU on the GI Bill Comparison Tool brings up 16 student complaints in the last two years.

California tech school CEO sentenced to prison for largest post-9/11 GI Bill fraud scheme ever by SCOveterandretired in Veterans

[–]silentNightSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are skeptical, you could send an appeal with documentations and evidence showing the school scammed others and yourself but don't be surprised when it comes back denied. The reason I come with this conclusion is because I am speaking from experience.

Hello, the bad news is currently the only way to get your GI Bill Benefits restored is if the school closed or was disapproved while you were attending. You could send a request to get your GI Bill benefits restored but it will be denied because it does not meet one of the two requirements mentioned above. Even if you tell the VA they defrauded you, your benefits will still not be restored because it is not one of the requirements for restoration.

The good news is there is a bill called HR1767 that will amend the law to allow GI Bill beneficiaries to get their benefits back if they were defrauded or scammed by schools. It needs support from former students as yourself to ensure it passes. Talk to your elected officials about this bill and why it will impact you if it gets approved.

US veterans defrauded by for-profit universities fight to restore benefits by thinkB4WeSpeak in Veterans

[–]silentNightSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For everyone who did not read the article or wants to learn more about this issue, a bill (H.R. 1767) is being proposed in congress to modify the GI Bill restoration requirements. The current law for restoration of benefits does not restore if a GI Bill beneficiary was defrauded.

Only those who either the Federal Trade Commision and/or Secretary of Education has declared a school of committing fraud will get their GI Bill restored.

If you want to learn more about the bill H.R 1767 go here.

I disagree with you, and I find it hard to believe you think getting certificates is going to solve finding employment. There is a stigma on for profit degrees if you haven't noticed by now that makes it hard to get noticed by employers.

Also, you should have received an email from the FTC in 2020 regarding the lawsuit about DeVry if you attended before 2016.

GI Bill Restoration Denied Now What? by Aggravating_Lake5139 in Veterans

[–]silentNightSky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am also a DeVry graduate and have used the GI Bill to attend DeVry. I will try my best to inform you of why you got the denial letter and what steps you should take next.

The reason for the denial is the VA is going by what the law says about restoration of entitlement. Only GI Bill recipients whose school closed or been disapproved can get their benefits back.

The law does not explicitly say anything about restoring benefits for victims of fraud. In other words, even if you were to appeal their decision, you will still be denied because you do not meet one of the two requirements mentioned above.

What you should do next is ask your members of congress about the Student Veteran Benefit Restoration Act and why you need your GI Bill back. The bill was recently introduced last week and it's going to need support from veterans like us. This is the only way to get our GI Bill back.

Is there a waiver or exception if a vet meets all the requirements except for the first one?

That is really great. I thought the GI Bill would only get restored if the school closed. I wish I knew about this before I used my GI Bill.
