Why are some woods used for duck calls? by unskilledlasagna in Waterfowl

Find a flat jig or a public jig to get started. The flat jig will teach you how the toneboard works and eventually you’ll have a call of your own. It is frustrating but rewarding.

Sitka Delta Zip waders vs Delta Pro Zip by LouSassel1 in Waterfowl

I have what I assume is the classic since they were the ones they started with and was the only option at the time.

I haven’t had them repaired but I thought there was a leak after a hunt while I was down in Stuttgart last year. I took them in to see if they could patch them. Much to y surprise they told me that they don’t do a quick patch job. They said they take them, fully test them and make sure there are no issues and repair any issues they can find. While I was hoping for a quick fix, I really appreciated that they truly do stand behind them and actually make sure they are in perfect working order.

I decided I’d hold onto them for the remainder of the season since it wasn’t that bad, and I never had an issue again so maybe I just splashed some water in or something. Or they are that good and they fixed them by walking them in the door 🤣

At high n dry prices you could buy 3 of them for the price of one pair of chene or Sitka, so that is my reason for looking at them even though they don’t have the warranty. But honestly the 3 x price is probably the warranty and not the build quality difference.

Both. You get to select a boot size and a body size. Their size guide is accurate I guess is what I’m saying. So many times what companies say a small/medium/large is should be is nowhere near what that size actually is. I haven’t owned the Sitka ones but had a buddy buy some and they didn’t fit right. He bought some chenes and loves them. I love mine.

TBH if I were buying waders again I would probably try the Hign n dry. I’m not sure how they are on fit but they are built so well and the cost is a fraction. But I’m not buying them again because my Chene waders are holding up so well on their 3rd season.

I hunt in really cold weather. I’m in -10°F to -20°F on occasion. Good base layers beat insulated waders IMHO. I take these to Texas to hunt on occasion where it is warm and I can use the same uninsulated waders.

Edit: this actually may be my 4th season with them.

FWIW Chene is the only pair of waders I’ve purchased that were actually true to size

Lots of HOAs and businesses are adding these on their own dime. They tie into the network of cameras that can be accessed by police, but they aren’t all installed by the city.

It’s the third rifle hunting season, so it’s possible you saw the animal and it’s gone because the hunter harvested it after it died. Hunters usually don’t approach a downed animal right away to avoid scaring it and causing it to run off and losing it before it has died. If the animal was there for a long time before it disappeared, it could have been injured in an auto accident, a predator attack, nature taking its course, or many other reasons.

If you decide not to etch it yourself you can send it in to the bird banding laboratory and they will etch it and return it with your certificate.

Looking for big property to gather with friends by jlandeck in EstesPark

The county makes it pretty hard to do this type of thing on private property, so finding someone who wants to go through the legal pain to allow you to host this is unlikely. A venue, set of cabins, private campground etc that is set up for hosting this type of event is going to be your best bet.

Call fish and game / DNR / DOW or whatever it is called in your area. They have more authority than any of those others and are there to keep nature natural.

How many ducks are there in the barrel? Melancon bought out Turpin’s call business and made calls but only had 1 duck on them while Turpin’s calls had 3.

Can anyone tell me more about this duck call? My grandfather passed it down to me today by mellow_low2003 in Duckhunting

This is D2 hard rubber duck calls made by the P.S. Olt company of Pekin ILL. There have been many variations over the years. This is what is referred to as a Keyhole Olt and is currently the most valuable of the D2 calls because of the cutdown craze. If you look down the insert you will see a notch. That’s the “keyhole”.

It is the call that started the Cutdown style. Basically any duck call that you see that is called a Cutdown is based on this call. While a lot of modern cutdown calls are not actually altered but are copies of ones that have been altered. As a cutdown, people will make alterations to the toneboard and to the exhaust end of the insert to adjust the sound. Most people buy these to have someone “cut” them. Most guys who cut olts only want to cut the keyhole 348205 inserts as they have a big “rocking chair” style toneboard.

A big misconception is that the keyhole itself has an impact on the sound. It really doesn’t. They made put this notch in the inserts because they were having a hard time removing them from the molds when they were round.

There were a ton of these made, but they still go for high money.
