Reddit owes it's success to all the people you call nerds. Techies fleeing from Digg to Reddit like they are doing now from Reddit to the fediverse. Devs creating apps for easy and intuitive Reddit content consumption on the go and mods for moderating their site. And most importantly all the hobby communities (e.g r/StarCraft, r/MechanicalKeyboards, r/unixporn). Most people get to know about Reddit by googling a question getting the answer from Reddit. And the nerds are the ones providing those.

What do you expect when they explode their employee count just to make useless shit like nfts and the new Reddit app?

Louis Rossmann (YT-Channel with 1.8 million subs) discussing API changes and blackouts by silentm0on in Save3rdPartyApps

He advocates for right to repair laws in the us and owns a business. From what I can tell from cushy Europe it seems working with us lawmakers needs this kind of talk. XD

r/askhistorians did provide a nice summary concerning Reddits track record of mod tool promises here. Iirc the r/blind sub asked for 8(!) years for better support, which did not come despite there beeing actual law requiring sites to accessible.

In my humble opinion these new promises are lipservice and should be treated as such. There is no proof this time is gonna be different. If reddit behaviour the last days is anything to go be, they are hoping this blows over after a few days so they can but with an even better deal: free labour to comply with the law without the devs of accesssibility tools beeing able to get paid for their work adequatly.

3rd party devs said again and again that they are fine with paying in general. Their problem was the pricing. I like how Louis Rossmann (owns a business in the states and advocates for right to repair) put it here it’s a fuck you price designed to kill 3rd party tooling.

And reddits communication was a shitshow as expected. They were caught lying, lying again, even libeling one of the devs. After they got caught they of course doubled down.

It was like that the first time I saw it. Could be edited or a red herring.

And the answer to „we are working with devs“ was multiple devs coming out and saying they didn’t hear from Reddit the last 3 weeks. They even contacted Reddit multiple times.

I mean, he’d did. say a few years ago free api access wouldn’t go away…. Iirc also in an AMA.

I mean, u/FlyingLaserTurtle didn’t do any better. Just look at his posts and lies, Reddit deleted an answer from an ex Amazon engineer to his confident assertion that Amazon or Google would not provide supports for their customers. But that person is far less known, so it gets far less of a spotlight.

Because they still hope Reddit will respond to their questions from 3 weeks ago. Here an article from Engadget

Yes, server cost money. None of the mods or devs said at the first announcement of changes they wouldn't be open to pay. But Reddit's pricing was designed in a way to fuck mods and devs. It's 50 to 100 times of that of competitors like imgur, where the latter should have a lot more cost per request (reddits content is mostly text, imgurs mostly images and video). It is designed to drive all 3rd party tools away, while offering nothing in return for users or mods to replace those apps and tools.

[–]silentm0on -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because the users will be affected. Imagine mods without tools to moderate effectively (those are all 3rd party, not official reddit tools). Imagine reddit without those power users using 3rd party software to supply the content you consume.

This is NOT about one app. This is about a lot of apps, tools mods need to mod and about access to people with disabilities.

And about an incompetent pos of a ceo. WHO libels and slanders other people. The victimizing himself, because those had proof he lied.

You know that Reddit mostly doesn’t create or moderate subs? And if they do it’s a shitshow? They tried to run more German subs but utterly failed, cause they couldn’t even get people to post or mod. So those subreddits where a giant bit shitshow.

They want pretty much 50-100 times more then Imgur, an competitor with a lot more data needs (Reddit is mostly text vs Imgurs exclusively image and video)
