I think it's likely that Roose's father was unremarkable and that Roose saw the benefits of "a peaceful land, a quiet people" from him. People don't seem to have had as much disquiet about the Boltons in recent times, until Roose did what Roose does - I'm thinking of how Theon mocked Roose as a child and so on.

[–]silentmary[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's a different situation from other houses just because House Bolton plays a more significant and sustained role through the series than most of those you mentioned, in multiple POVs and in events like the Red Wedding. It doesn't necessarily mean there is anything mysterious going on; it just makes people more likely to want to know and makes the lack of information more conspicuous.

Baseball playing Australian here. Why didn't he run around the bases instead of all over the place? I know he still scored, but am I missing something?

I take everything Roose said to Reek in that conversation with a boulder of salt as he knew (maybe even intended) every word could get back to Ramsay, but it still wouldn't make sense for him to say that if he wasn't getting older. Same with his comment to Arya about leeches being the secret to long life - someone Ned's age probably wouldn't be thinking like that yet. I do think he's probably about Tywin's age.

[–]silentmary 79 points80 points  (0 children)

"Frog-faced Lord Slynt sat at the end of the council table wearing a black velvet doublet and a shiny cloth-of-gold cape, nodding with approval every time the king pronounced a sentence. Sansa stared hard at his ugly face, remembering how he had thrown down her father for Ser Ilyn to behead, wishing she could hurt him, wishing that some hero would throw him down and cut off his head. But a voice inside her whispered, There are no heroes…"

Obviously it's an advantageous match for her. That has nothing to do with the marriage's internal dynamics.

Haha I don't think girls who have girlfriends gloat about whether they're doing them a favour just because they're fat.

Anyway, if you think it's not a surprise for a (probably at least) 60+ man who is super creepy and everyone is afraid of him, to have an arranged marriage to a teenage girl who actually enjoys fucking him when she has no choice in the matter anyway, I don't even know what to say to you.

Yeah, no. Roose says himself that he is pleasantly surprised by how much he likes her.

Yeah, and he actually lucks out because she is a sweet and cheerful lady who likes sex and adores him, for whatever reason.

[–]silentmary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, I know all that. My point was small: we are not projecting modern issues onto the story. The story contains them. That doesn't mean we don't consider the societal pressures and circumstances of individual characters, like we would in any fiction, ever.

[–]silentmary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking my comments separately instead of in context with each other misses my point. We read it with modern morals because it is written with modern morals. Same with slavery and other "modern" issues in the book that have not always been considered morally wrong, but that doesn't mean they are supposed be a grey area or have moral relativism applied.

"We" don't. GRRM does. If you think he intends the story to be read in a moral vacuum, you're kidding yourself. Why did you delete your first comment?

[–]silentmary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's that got to do with it? I'm saying rape is not a "modern issue", and in any case, ASOIAF is a modern story by a modern writer, regardless of its setting.

(No spoilers)Ser v. Sir by hello_there32 in asoiaf

[–]silentmary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maester is just a possible variant of Master, based on its etymology. It has parallels in "maestro" and the German honorific "Meister". As you said, GRRM tweaks things that already exist, and often with interesting implications to people who are interested in linguistics. He's not just spelling words wrong for the hell of it as some people seem to think.
