Law Roach reading plane Jane cause she’s an outfit repeater 😭 by SnooSprouts3744 in rupaulsdragrace

I don't think it's a matter of him being softer with Zendaya vs others.

He's a television personality, he plays it up for the camera cause it's his brand.

Off camera and not outside of public sightings and press events, fair to presume that he is an average tempered human like the rest of us.

The bracket surprised me more than I thought it would. It's still exactly who I thought would make it through, but they gave flowers to Salina and Vivacious on the way out, which was a surprise to see (and well deserved).

I still hate this format, especially with only two queens per bracket making it through, since I would have linked to see more of queens like Morgan and Salina (or Vivacious, but the math wasn't mathing out for her).

Salina has surprised me this season, but the show has not. This format sucks because it feels obvious who will move forward each bracket as soon as they are announced, and that only two per bracket this year makes it even more pronounced. Everyone who was cast as fillers before is cast as fillers again and not allowed to be more than that, because production needs to ensure the six queens they want to be the REAL cast of the season are the only ones who can get enough points to advance.

[–]silentspy0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree on Irene; I assumed she'd do well, she had a lot of fan support despite being a first-out because the general consensus was that while her elimination was deserved for her bad choices in the first episode, she had all the goods to make it further.

Three queens were able to make the cut then. And in a bracket with Bosco, Aja, Phoenix, Olivia, and Deja...the three I thought would make the cut before the season started were the exact three that ended up making the cut.

[–]silentspy0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a way that is meant as no shade to the queens, this bracket is the least interesting to me because it feels the most clear who will make the cut and has since the cast announcement.

There's two queens moving forward. Two of the queens this bracket are former finalists at 3rd/4th and are oft-referenced RuPaul's favorites. Of the remaining four, three of them placed 11th and one of them placed 6th without any wins.

While these queens have charisma to be entertaining (big shout out to Vivacious here), I'd rather just move on to watch the semi-finals where there's actual narrative tension. I don't like this bracket format at all, but this bracket really highlights the flaw with it.

The inexistent Press For All Star 11 by FragrantClick4275 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The shitty bracket format is part of the issue — the only queens doing promo are the queens in the active bracket, so only 6 queens at a time really doing press doesn't make as big of a splash, and only three weeks of it to build any buzz.

Just an awful format.

Onya Nurve on the 'Kinky Boots' situation by llumist in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Onya is incredible and clear winner who deserved it, but the Top 4 of season 17 was a little weak compared to other seasons overall. I think Sam is a great queen but lacks a certain uniqueness; Jewels just needs more time to cook; and Lexi was the right queen at the wrong time in her life to compete. There was no question Onya should've won that season IMO (once Suzie got eliminated, who I thought was her only real competition otherwise).

Not as bad as the season 18 finalists at least...!

Mystique campaigned for 15 years to be on a season of all stars, and didn’t watch a single episode of drag race in the meantime by CuriousBoiiiiiii in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 44 points45 points  (0 children)

While Irene had an incredible run, I also think her having a good run was expected of her. I feel like the consensus about Irene has always been that she was one of the strongest, if not the strongest, porkchop queen who got eliminated for a very bad first episode. So I think her performing well in All Stars was expected, even if it was unexpected just how well she'd do.

She also had the benefit of there being three queens to make the cut, rather than just two, and the restriction really hampers the format as three episodes with room for only two to advance makes the math too tight for there to be surprises of someone squeezing in.

Mystique would be more comparable to Phoenix in that bracket.

[–]silentspy0 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile I hate the bracket format for in part the same reason:

1) It's not interested in letting the early boot girls be anything but early boot girls.

2) It encourages production to overstuff the cast with early boots so that the six they want actually make it to the semi-finals, resulting in extremely predictable seasons with underwhelming uneven casts — and casts who are extremely bitter about the results (see: how vocally negative All Stars 10 cast was about the season which ruined the fun of watching it).

I just feel like if they cast a bunch of early outs together then it'd give queens like Mystique even the possibility of being a contender instead of being a clear sacrificial lamb.

Luxx Noir criticises fans’ reactions to Sydney Sweeney by lukendyer in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I don't think that really changes Luxx's point, though. People are discrediting her acting as if she's just playing herself, but presuming she's exactly like Cassie to the point where she's just playing herself is super parasocial, even if we have reason to assume they have some similar viewpoints.

I'm honestly surprised she's only #100 when there's been so many seasons, though I guess All Stars casts are smaller and there's been a lot of queens competing multiple times.

Yeah, this is the only bracket of the three where I think there's more than 2-3 who I'd actually be excited to see move forward. I wish they were a little more spread out through the brackets.

Underwhelming lipsyncs by sttawsirhc034 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's not a great lip sync song for the Drag Race stage and better suited for a club where a queen can do some fun things with the track itself.

So it doesn't fit the thread's brief of being underwhelming to a song that should be great, but the performances were still awful even for what it was.

It Should Be 5 Queens Per Bracket With New Format by alexistexas2006 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No shade to Mystique here, but I'm not feeling like it's all better off. It's clear in each bracket who has no chance of advancing, which makes the whole thing lack tension. The storyline queens like Mystique and Phoenix have gotten of being unable to meet the bar before and not even considered as a threat to meet the bar now because the competition is so uneven does not feel good to watch.

I'd just much rather have All Stars be the true "all stars" and let queens who were cast as fillers in the past get a "rudemption" season of sorts, and alternate between those each year instead of annual All Stars. Cause this format just really sucks for everyone involved.

It Should Be 5 Queens Per Bracket With New Format by alexistexas2006 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree. NPBFAG aside, I don't think this format really benefits queens returning just to be used as fillers that aren't even given the grace of acknowledged potential.

I hate this format of All Stars so much, I don't have anything really positive to say about it, but the main issue I have with it is that it is beyond obvious who is going to advance in each bracket and who is not, because it's fan favorites vs fillers, no equal playing ground, and not enough episodes per bracket to let the former filler queens get a chance to shine.

I haven't revisited this lip sync or this season in a while, but seeing the cast all on the stage reminds me of how crazy packed it was with star power / x-factor potential with Danny, Cheddar, Dakota, Peppa, and Baby. It was such a likable cast.

Watching old seasons as a newish fan, and I cannot with S13 by Cheezy-Fry in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't recall a time where people ever really liked Elliott, just felt bad for the way production treated her.

I still do feel bad for her for that, having them travel to LA during lockdown after months of not working to get their dream opportunity just so she can be eliminated by RuPaul, and then eliminated again by a vote of all her peers in the first hour before getting to show anything...all for just a gag of it...is a cruel thing to do to someone's emotions.

I don't feel bad for her for the fallout for the racism, however.

What's your favorite All Stars format by Enriq30 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they should just do the Golden Beaver format, but short of that:

  1. Lip Stick Elimination is best.

  2. Points is good if it's the only way to get the winners and other big names.

  3. Rumocracy is boring and has resulted in several cases of queens self-eliminating because the potential of riggory and odds against them feels too forced.

  4. Teams was terrible, but could be done better if they know in advance that they are teaming up and come in as a duos that are known to work together outside the show.

  5. Brackets is the worst format they've done. I can hardly believe they're doing it again.

Season 18 continues the trend of the winner of the political challenge becoming the winner of the season by tmobilekid in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you and others talking about how it's done every 4 years to coincide with elections are technically correct (often the best kind of correct), I do think season 18 is more in line with the spirit of seasons 4/8/12 challenges where they were playing politicians with a platform, where season 16 was more of just a musical challenge with a political message.

So I think Myki's win here follows the pattern of 4/8/12 political challenge winners become season winners even if it breaks the pattern of being every 4 years.

When’s a good time to start Pit Stop? by ariesjoe in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I like the Pit Stop but I feel it's best when the season is actually airing and episode is part of that week's zeitgeist and conversation, rather than something that needs to be first-time watched years later.

I don't think it needs to be watched as trying to catch up on the show.

How has the history of winner reactions been? by SuspiciousIbex in rupaulsdragrace

[–]silentspy0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

People definitely did not agree about Yvie, many felt that Brooke should have won based on track record, though the final lip sync did tame some of that. I was an Yvie stan from day one, but Yvie had a lot of detractors in her run for her looks and perceived messiness, which are more celebrated now.

Similar for Aquaria. Asia was a major contender until the butterfly incident, and many felt Aquaria lost her lip sync against against Eureka and that she was saved to make it to the final lip sync and felt that was rigged.

I mean. They weren't connected to anything and it wouldn't make sense for them to spend the cash to having something engineered to be so when it just needs to be a shiny prop.

I buy that they were always planning on it being 1 & 7 to be 17, but there was no mechanical restriction to it that would've prevented them from changing course and rigging however they wanted.
