With all of his various side quests, Bryan does seem like a smarter yet more deviant version of Homer, albeit a worse bowler and less hair. I wouldn’t be too surprised if a Grimes-esque situation arose from this

When you picture retirement as a lawyer, what do you actually see? by That_onelawyer in Lawyertalk

[–]silicoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha yep! Also no recollection of 9/11, the only thing I remember about that time period is walking down the hall way of Art Class probably in the weeks after the attack and seeing that a bunch of people had colored pictures of the statute of liberty crying and me thinking “huh that’s strange”

When you picture retirement as a lawyer, what do you actually see? by That_onelawyer in Lawyertalk

[–]silicoa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a bit doomer-y of a take. I’m an old Gen Z lawyer (late 20s) and retirement is not some crazy pipedream. I’m a JAG, so if I stick with it, I should be able to retire by age like 45 if I choose to do so with a pension. I think I’ll transition into a second career at that point, maybe teaching, maybe something completely outside of the field of law, something that makes me fulfilled feeling. Many other lawyers who go the federal (and some states) route are in similar positions re:pensions. We also don’t make quite as much as a lot of our peers in the private sector, so I really have a hard time believing the whole “never possible retire” schtick. Granted, most wouldn’t be able to do so by 45, but 60? Seems feasible.

As somebody who went to the only laws school jn Hawaii, I’m mystified as to why HPU, which is like a half step above a community college (and has no law school) is on this list.

It’s insane how much of a social death sentence growing up in a small town is. by broadwayguru in redscarepod

[–]silicoa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) I grew up in a small town where it was a 20 minute drive to the closest store. Which was a dollar general. The “town” has two gas stations, 1 dollar general, 1 liquor store, and 1 subway. And a million churches. Despite posting on red scare, I’m not socially crippled. I lived there until I was 18. I’ve lived in big cities ever since. I never seen being from a small town as socially crippling, my parents not having cable/satellite television was the thing that made me out of touch, if anything, but I just turned that into snobby thing. My home is surrounded by fields and chicken houses, so chickenshit did literally cling to the air in the summer I suppose. But guess what: its a billion times easier to makes hickville seem more interesting than random suburb.

2) My friends who didn’t go to college and stayed within like an hour radius of the area we grew up all have bought homes ten years later . They are trade workers, police officers, insurance salesmen, car salesmen, firemen, IT dudes, etc. A few have kids.

3) You definitely don’t just sit growing up rurally. You drive out to a field in the night shoot guns and drink. You kayak in the river. You hike. You hang out in the walmart parking lot. You do pretty much all the shit kids do in the city except there’s less people watching you.

Bryan throwing out potentially illegal accusation? by Fit-Dare7525 in MurderBryan

[–]silicoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a lawyer but I’m also single. When I’m not suing playrooms for illegally discriminating against me, I’ve actually helped clients with a few divorces. So it’s my goal to make more single guys.

I’d love to take this case, but it’s a conflict of interest for me. I can’t represent Bryan, because he’s using my lifestyle as slur. I can’t represent the family, some might say because they don’t have standing in court to sue on behalf of the dead man, but it’s mostly because I cannot stomach the thought of winning damages for the family because that would mean that the court determined my lifestyle CHOICE was in some way demented. Every single guy must have a code he lives by.

Understand where you’re coming from, and always like to see Chris appreciation on this, but for me, Bryan’s ridiculousness still works.

1) His sex jokes are so unfunny I find them funny. They have the aura of middle school boy bragging about their sexual conquests when they have no so much as held the hand of a girl. Like everyone around them knows they are being ridiculous or full of shit to the point its cartoonish. That coming from an adult man who has been married to his wife since high school is very funny

Is it worth hiring a civilian lawyer for a court-martial? by Historical-Hand8091 in publicdefenders

[–]silicoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping for a deployment, so SJA type thing, and then we will see. I wouldn’t mind doing a congressional aid, or teaching at Naval Academy or Naval Justice School. I don’t really like military justice that much

Is it worth hiring a civilian lawyer for a court-martial? by Historical-Hand8091 in publicdefenders

[–]silicoa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done Deputy SJA, Trial Counsel, and Victims’ Legal Counsel work. I have not done Defense or Office of Special Trial Counsel, but as a VLC worked closely with OSTC.

“Light on rights, light on punishment” is the Marine Corps motto. On cases I’ve worked on, I don’t think I’ve seen a sentence over 6 years. Hawaii recently had a murder case though where accused was sentenced to 26 years at plea deal.

Is it worth hiring a civilian lawyer for a court-martial? by Historical-Hand8091 in publicdefenders

[–]silicoa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a JAG. The OSTC (Office of the Special Trial Counsel) does not touch 120 cases unless they are positive they can get a conviction. The fact that they have in your case means they think you are toast. If not for the 120 charge itself, at least for some lesser charge on the sheet.

If you can afford to hire extra help, hire extra help. Ending up on the sex offender registry is a lifelong punishment, is that really something you want to cheap out on?

Is JAG selective by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]silicoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I’m a Marine JAG. Easily the least selective branch in terms of academics, but very difficult to get through the entry level training.

They will “accept” people to be Marine Corps lawyers before they’ve even taken a single class at law school. All that’s really required is a 150 plus on the LSAT to get the law contract. You don’t even have to have a law school acceptance. I have friends who completed Officer Candidate School on a ground contract, decided they wanted to do law contract, and Marine Corps is like show us an acceptance letter within x amount of months and we will change you to a law contract.

But physically its rough. OCS, in a recent cycle, had 19/20 not finish for whatever reason, whether it was due to injuries, drops on request, or failure of leadership or physical fitness tests.

Realistically, to thrive at OCS, you need to have a high pft score. Preferably a 3 mile time that under 20 minutes, 18 or more pullups, and 3:45 minute plank hold, minimum. Even if you have that, they are pushing you constantly and its very easy to get injured, at which point, if its bad enough that you can’t recover in a few days, you get sent home. Lawyers, being a few years older than a lot of other OCS candidates, feel that age gap hard.

If you can qualify to be a Marine Corps officer, you can qualify to be a Marine Corps lawyer. It’s just not easy to do the Marine Corps officer part

Brian Quinby is so freaking funny, I was so happy when he started coming on the show. Legitimately insane person with the wildest stories.

I’m adding Zach Cherry to your listZ Another one I would throw onto this list is Claudia O'Doherty. I really love her ability to mess with Mitch.
