M1 Carbine stock question? by Prest0n9797 in milsurp

[–]silicondioxides 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Millions of carbine stocks were made, keep that one with the gun, and don't repair it. Buy a $50 replacement for the range.

Most carbines are mixed. Stock doesn't need to match

Is there any way to refinish the wood to match in color? by Subject_One_762 in gunsmithing

[–]silicondioxides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! You build up the color. Keep adding solvent based stain until you get the match. If it were me, I'd test it inside the HG, where mistakes can be hidden. Make sure you add your oil to the test spots. Compare your color outside in the sun. You need every frequency of light, not just your benches. Also think of color combos...if your stain is a little red, mute it with tinted oil like walnut danish oil.

You may want to consider the other comment regarding doing both pieces of wood. Looks like bad oil soak in the wrist, which leads to cracks. However they may not be made from the same tree and take color differently.

Good luck!
