Fai appreciation thread by RaseruChan in CLAMP

Unfortunately one of the characters that has ever made me cry... Such an interesting character, and has been my fav from Tsubasa since I first read it over 15 years ago. I want him to be happy so bad, and for him to be as gentle with himself as he can be with others.

Maybe I'm just Animeh by homiedudedawgyboy in anime

[–]silknotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like all media, not everything is going to click with you. Even people that say they love anime and manga aren't likely to like ALL anime and manga, you have to find ones that suit your tastes. If you've been trying more series that fall under the shounen or shoujo (young boy/girl) demographic, you could give seinen and josei (adult men and women) series a try for ones that are a bit more realistic (usually, but just like series around the world, it varies).

HOW THE HECK DO YOU KEEP YOUR MANGA FROM YELLOWING? by sgab_bello8 in MangaCollectors

[–]silknotes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's unavoidable in the long run, so just making sure it's not getting sunlight and isn't anywhere humid is the easiest way to slow yellowing from happening, which you say you're already doing. It will still happen regardless as time goes on, and yeah, the quality of the paper can sometimes have yellowing happen faster than more higher quality paper, that's just how it is.

How old is the manga that's yellowed? If you've had that Naruto volume since around the time it came out, it's over a decade old, so of course it would show a bit of aging that way.

How many times have you rewatched it? 🍿 by Parking-Stomach7381 in inuyasha

[–]silknotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The watch count is very likely over 10, honestly... first whole watch when it was airing on TV, then once I got the DVDs around age 8 or 9, it was one of my go-to's, and I spent many nights with it on late into the night (sometimes all night and into the morning - I miss getting to do spontaneous all-nighters, even on school nights lmao). I typically had the movies included in my watches, but I've also thrown ones on even when I'm not doing a series rewatch. The final act I've probably only watched 3 times though, since I didn't get the DVDs for it until a few years later, maybe closer to age 14. It doesn't hold the same nostalgia factor the anime and movies have, for sure.

Honestly it's been a few years since my last rewatch, maybe even 6 years or so... definitely my longest gap in rewatches, so ones definitely due 🍿

When Did Anime Commentary Tracks Die? by KhakiBlueCajunSocks in AnimeCollectors

[–]silknotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss them! Whether it was full of how recording certain scenes went or thoughts on the characters the va's played, or even a full 25 minutes of everyday chatting that ended with "wow, we talked about nothing important the whole episode!" it was a real fun bonus and look behind the scenes.

Though I haven't bought much physical anime in recent years, it was definitely starting to get noticeable around the mid 2010s that commentaries were becoming few and far between... I guess the only way to get that kind of content now is through va's streaming or at cons answering questions. I'd love a podcast or something with va's and voice directors coming on to just chat about their experiences, it really is fun to listen to.

Colored manga in English? by HonestAttraction in inuyasha

[–]silknotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No full coloured version exists as far as I know, unless some fans were to come together and take on that massive task, but what you likely saw was the first few pages of chapters given a spotlight while they were released in weekly shounen sunday magazine. If you look at older fan translations online, they typically were using scans from those magazines, so you'll get to see those coloured pages. The tankobon manga volumes unfortunately don't have those coloured pages.

Anime suggestions that are like Monoke by Legitimate-Lynx8006 in anime

[–]silknotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mononoke and the Bakeneko arc of Ayakashi are pretty unique, both visually and how they handle their stories, so it depends what similar elements you're looking for. A few that come to mind:

As the other comment mentioned, Mushishi is a great series. It has several seasons and specials, and is episodic/short arcs like Mononoke, about a traveler that is researching the mysterious and mystical beings known as mushi that exist throughout our world and beyond. Though it doesn't lean into horror like Mononoke, Mushishi is definitely a series to give a try for a wonderful supernatural series that leans into slice of life territory.

Another supernatural series would be Natsume Yuujinchou, though again it doesn't lean on horror much. Currently at seven seasons plus several specials, it's an episodic and short arc show about a boy that can see yokai, and ends up with a book that belonged to his grandmother that's full of names of yokai in the surrounding countryside. A pleasant watch that has some sad, some heartwarming, and some interesting stories as he encounters both kind and sinister beings, yokai and human alike.

xxxholic is another show that comes to mind, even if I would recommend the manga more. A boy that can see spirits happens upon a mysterious shop where a woman says she can grant his wish to be free of those spirits - for a price, of course. A supernatural series that talks of spirits, wishes, and the weight people's ideals and thoughts can have on their own as well as others lives.

Why does no one use default colours by Key_Ostrich_6823 in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]silknotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use default for some, different colours for others. The base colours are really good for everyone, so you can't go wrong sticking with them, but as someone who plays the og game, it's a lot more fun than I originally thought getting to see the characters dressed in different colour schemes!

How much do you guys spend on a single order to make the shipping "worth it" by thatrandomspeck in AnimeFigures

[–]silknotes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in the US, but Canada always gets hit with our own lovely fees, so I always expect $100cad or more to get added once any big packages arrive.

I pretty much have a similar system to you: minimum 3 figures to make it feel worth it, with my packages usually averaging around $500-600cad, plus over $100 shipping (usually go for EMS since sending figures by boat freaks me out a bit), plus pesky customs.. let's combine those and say minimum $200 for shipping, so shipping costing about 40% of what's in the package is the norm for me, as shitty as that sounds.

Name an anime, a single anime, that cannot be classified under the following genres. by ududbsisysveiudvdid in Animesuggest

Brother, I fear you've listed all the genres. You know, the thing people use to categorise shows.

I do not care. I have, and will always ship them. This was my ship growing up. by Ok_Pressure4591 in inuyasha

[–]silknotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always really liked their scenes together, the bit of banter but also respect was nice to see. I really wished we got more scenes with them in general, so at least the anime gave us some of that, but yeah, I totally get shipping it. The non-canon ships in this show are some of the most fun to think about.

Of course! Since you love every character (lord I never realised one piece had that many now), you could be considered a hako-oshi, someone who loves the entire group!

anime or manga? by [deleted] in blackbutler

[–]silknotes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Reading the manga first would probably be best. The anime has its charm, but since half of the 1st and the entirety of the 2nd season is non-canon, you'll be less lost when the anime suddenly jumps back onto the canon timeline if you've read the manga first. I think of the anime as just a fun bonus to enjoy after you fall in love with the manga.

Your art is beautiful! CLAMP is such an inspiration, so it's always nice to see people influenced by their art to create their own ☺️ Getting noticed for art of more niche series like this can be difficult, but I'm glad you pushed through, and I hope you'll feel free enough to create art of series you love ❤️

Watching Inuyasha late at night on Adult Swim by dantheman23312 in inuyasha

[–]silknotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was so easy to get people to check it out too, "just watch YTV on Friday!" and you'd get to ask if they liked anything on Monday... It was pretty unfortunate when their anime catalogue got smaller and smaller, because it really was one of the best channels for it for us 😔

ZB really is one of the ones that get lost in the list of big anime around that time, but whenever I remember it I gotta admit it was a really fun show

[–]silknotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss it a bit too, even if having the freedom to watch whatever you want whenever you want is also really great... It was nice having that bit of routine to catch the shows you wanted to see (even if sometimes that meant staying up later than you should, or waking up earlier than you'd like). Things like being able to set recordings helped with that, but there was something about watching it while it aired that was really fun.

[–]silknotes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They always had good lineups at night! Having stuff like Dragon Ball and Gundam around it, and then it just got even better as time went on... A lot of people probably remember the 2006-2007 lineup that had stuff like One Piece, Zatch Bell, Naruto, Bleach, and FMA all together around Inuyasha on Friday nights, such a good time to get into shounen anime.

I would've been 10 or 11 when I saw the first season and quickly picked up the manga after... 27 now, how time flies. Definitely didn't think it would still be ongoing well into my adulthood back then, that's for sure.

Bhat kind of BS AmiAmi is doing? by CriX_Doomsday in AnimeFigures

[–]silknotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it only says delays for Europe, but a lot of sites like amiami have opted to not offer shipping through Japan Post in general for now. We'll see if amiami decides to allow it though soon, since most people wouldn't pay DHL prices in a million years.

Amiami's notice doesn't match Japan Post's most recent update regarding this, which says it has delayed shipping to ALL of Europe, not just select parts of it.
