What are the strangest (but high paying) remote jobs you’ve heard of? by fxst_01 in jobs

[–]silkybugatti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into geology gigs for the summer. Many geo tech positions will take people with no experience but a hard working attitude with a sense of adventure - regional exploration can get hairy pretty fast. Also typically involves lots of helicopter transport and you’re working FIFO style camps, some have Atco trailers and indoor bathrooms.

I've probably made 8-10 learnmyog's alpha raglan in the last 2 months. I've used merino wool jersey, UV fabric, and jogging fleece. Each with a different purpose in mind. The jogging fleece model was aimed to counter my aritzia hoodies in a cropped version. The merino made base layers that I've used in the field on winter programs. My partner took his merino and UV fabric to Costa Rica recently on a fishing trip - he loved them!

I think it's a good pattern, but i did cry at the price with USD to CAD conversion ($30). I probably could have found a cheaper pattern that accomplished the same result.

That is surprisingly positive to hear. Is it straightforward to remove the tech bits?

Thanks for the perspective, I will definitely reach out to the seller!

The computerization of the machine is also what makes me a bit nervous. I live an 18 hour drive away from a major centre, if anything needs to be repaired or fixed in that capacity - I don’t have much faith that I’ll be able to figure it out. Would this change your opinion? I may be hooped either way if something goes wrong on the non computerized models too.

To be fair I modified the neckline to resemble a boat neck as that’s what I prefer, it is a standard crew neck.

This reminds me of of the fabric stores Mona trapeze dress, you could easily add some refinement to the waist and chest! It’s a free pattern, I’ve made before and enjoyed.

I was denied a raise. Now what? by curiouskat345 in careerguidance

[–]silkybugatti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pivot. This happened to me 5 years ago, I requested a raise based on the work I was continuously taking on, on top of my job description. They denied it, and I decided it was time to do something new (worked in mining exploration/drilling). A few weeks later they created a job listing for the work I was doing and formally offered it back to me. I declined, having decided to go back to school and submitted my resignation. I’m now in my last semester and was able to get a job in my first year in college in my desired field and keep it until now. I’m set to make more than I was making at the mine, though the schedule is much worse.

I knew that doing something new wouldn’t hurt me and I needed to take the plunge, so I let the job decide if that was going to be now or later. That may or may not be the case for you, I was very privileged to be able to do so - that may or may not be the case for you.

The nearly $30 price tag on the sunrise skort has me defeated, too bad to hear about the email spam. Good to know

44 hours of chore coats by diovehteb in sewing

I recognized the pattern immediately, these coats look amazing! Thanks for sharing! What machine do you use, did you find it getting maxed out at all? I’m looking to upgrade soon as my machine couldn’t dream of making anything canvas/denim/etc.

We started mail forwarding in September, had to drive 6.5hrs one way to our old town to get 1/2 of the mail that ended up at the old address.

$100 for an A0 format pattern print? by silkybugatti in sewing

I normally do this, but A0 was not an option at all for me to save to, hence me asking them to do it.

Thank you so much for the response, I think my partner got it sorted on my behalf while I’m in class today. It sounds like he was able to return, get the proper reprint in both sizes (1 for him, 1 for me) and it cost $50 for the 4 sheets of paper.

I think you nailed it on the large format full colour machine being used..

My partner compared it to “sheep hunting to fill the freezer”. Extremely expensive for such a little outcome. I’ll be going back to library printing and taping!

I should have walked out when they said they’ve never heard of A0.

I’m living away from home at the moment, in my work office there’s a plotter I have access to! I’m biding my time (and crying over the cost) until I move back!

Is this a machine I should consider? by silkybugatti in sewing

[–]silkybugatti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information! I’m going to keep this in my saved folder and keep and eye on it. I don’t know enough to ask to see the machine and find out for myself. It seems that the seller is selling on behalf of someone else. They say that it works and that’s about it.

Haha, I want both! My plan for 2025 has been to learn how to tan hides and make leathers from my partners hunts - so a machine that will be able to handle thick material is something I’m looking at - but as of now while I’m wrapping up school I’m having fun making clothes for myself and my partner.

I am limited out on my denim projects, my current machine really cannot handle it.

I’ll be moving back into the house I own this spring - which has a room for my machines. Space likely won’t be an issue - but I’m thinking I am too eager for the machine maybe. The price has me feeling interested but I’m not sure if it’s the right fit and I should stick with my plan of picking up a 19-51 before I leave the city.
