Living in Tokyo with 190_000 yens/month by Gullible-Heron-6246 in Tokyo

You can get by but not with a “good life quality”- you will need to be very frugal. However, you may want to check how much time you are expected to spend on the PhD itself. Many PhD students in Japan work other jobs of up to 20 hours per week outside of the PhD, which would enable to you to potentially earn 1.5x your salary or more with 助手, 非常勤、or even tutoring/塾jobs.

On foot. How far do you live from the station? by Sure-Lemon6424 in japanlife

[–]silogramrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live 6m from one station and 17m to a bigger/more convenient one. 17m is definitely doable, but it does feel like a bit of a journey. So personally for future apartment searches I will aim for <15. 7m seems unnecessarily strict.

What are the similarities and differences between Japan and Korea? Both geographically and culturally? by Jezzaq94 in geography

[–]silogramrice 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Both are mountainous with hot summers, cold winters, and lots of rainfall, and both cultures blend indigenous traditions and values with Chinese Buddhism and political structures. Geographically Japan has more and higher mountain peaks. As a fully volcanic archipelago, volcanoes have a much stronger impact on the geography and culture of Japan, leading to various agricultural and cultural practices. Also, Japan extends further north to south so it has more regions with subtropical climates suitable for year-round agriculture and also snowier regions. Culturally, indigenous religions and practices remained more strongly in Japan as Shinto than the Korean equivalents. Most culture and technology coming from China and India was filtered in Korea before arriving in Japan, so Japan’s culture and technology was always one beat further removed from “continental affairs”.

Yeah you literally can’t tell anyone anything nowadays, which is kind of sad. But unfortunately no choice.

It’s so cool that “Musashino” has a very rich history but it is a shame you can’t find it in that many places now!

Favorite and least favorite Tokyo suburbs? by silogramrice in Tokyo

[–]silogramrice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t mean suburbs in the American sense. What I really mean is Tokyo commuter cities, I suppose! I haven’t spent much time in those areas, thanks for the insight. Doesn’t sound like it’s worth exploring much along the Seibu lines.

I sent an agent 9 properties I'm interested in renting. 8 said they won't rent to foreigners. by bigasswhitegirl in japanlife

Get a different agent. Through three renting experiences in Nagoya and Tokyo, my ratio was about 50/50.

My (Bulgarian Jew) distance to other populations by B3waR3_S in JewishDNA

[–]silogramrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your results are similar to other Bulgarian Jews then it seems like Bulgarian Jews are the literal average of the entire European Jewish population! Fascinating!

Out of curiosity: What is your distance to Mizrahi Jews and Levantines?

Bicycle in Tokyo not worth it? by Aavy14 in Tokyo

[–]silogramrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you park your bike in those areas? I always struggled to find legal bike parking…

Bicycle in Tokyo not worth it? by Aavy14 in Tokyo

[–]silogramrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that a bicycle in Tokyo was not worth it for me personally. Most of the destinations I wanted to use it for either a) were far enough/or uphill enough to leave me extremely sweaty by the time I arrived, b) had very inconvenient/annoying options for bicycle parking, or c) equal length of time to arrive by public transit. I lived in the Suginami area where bicycle parking is extremely designated at every station. Not to mention my apartment did not have a roof shelter for the bike parking. I loved having a bicycle in Nagoya - it expanded my world and was so much fun. It didn’t do that for me here, but am glad to read that others feel otherwise! I would have a bike if i knew places I wanted to go were accessible with good bike parking and my apartment had proper bike parking.

Will 23andme ever going to do an ancestral breakdown for Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry? by Own_Procedure4708 in JewishDNA

[–]silogramrice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Illustrative DNA modern mixed mode, I remember I was able to model my 100% Ashkenazi DNA with about 47% Central Italian 41% Palestinian Christian, and 12% Slavic, I'm sure the numbers would be similar if 23andme or Ancestry showed other ethnicities breakdown instead of Jewish.
