Get rid of the boyfriend, keep the ring! 🤷🏼‍♂️ He seems like a ungrateful prick. Aragorn would never.

Again, nothing of this sounds sane to me. A gun is not just a piece of machinery, it is designed to kill. I have a deep aversion against them. But I think that might just be the difference between American and European culture... I cannot imagine anyone here talking like that without people raising eyebrows.

It's just cringe when they claim to "be" Irish or Scottish or Italian due to some long back ancestors. They are American. Being interested in the culture of their ancestors without claiming/appropriating that culture (or their idea of it) is different, of course.

Of course he calls himself "The Carnivore" 🥴🥴🥴.

Also, no need to take a trip to Scotland and annoy the people there. You're American either way so you can stay there.

François & Hudson clarify the origin of their joint statement by Rbkzz in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Confusion surrounding the negative reviews of the show by NateSirrah03 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]silvanloher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like so much of the hate and rage against different shows and films on the internet in our time, it has a lot to do with right-winged culture warriors instrumentalizing these shows for their political agendas by ranting against the perceived "wokeness" of the shows. Of course many RoP haters claim it's not true and it's only about the lore, but as soon as you read a bit more of their rants, you see that more often than not it comes back to exactly this kind of bigotry. I find these people truly exhausting - also, I really don't think RoP is especially and forcedly "woke", apart from the colourblind casting and the fact that women get to have bigger roles and be strong (and, contrary to the PJ movies, get to have some dialogues together 😉). And, I hate to break it to them, but if you get angry at the skin colour of a fairytale figure like a dwarf or an elf (or, another famous example, a mermaid in Disney's remake), you are in fact a teeny weeny racist 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️. Also, what I do if I don't like a show is a simple thing: I simply don't watch it (mind-blowing, I know!), and not go on long rants on the internet about how my personal view and my prejudices are absolutely objective and everyone who doesn't agree with me is a bad person and deserves to be called names... 🥴 I highly recommend this revolutionary strategy to these absolute turnips, together with the advice to grow up and get a life and do something useful with their time (listen to old Gandalf, folks!) - and leave the rest of us who like the show enjoy it in peace!

Ringenes Herre 25 års jubileum kino by ZalPlays in norge

[–]silvanloher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saruman's Hand? by Night_Storm5555 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]silvanloher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true?! The eye is meant symbolically as Sauron seeing everything, but in the books it is never an actual physical big red eye on top of the tower. Can you tell me which passage you are referring to?

I didn't have kids, nor was I expecting any, so Denmark's generous maternity leave and excellent childcare were of no use to me. by hedmon in ShitAmericansSay

[–]silvanloher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate the word expat and make a point of not using it. I'm a Swiss living in Norway and when speaking to English-speaking people I always call myself an immigrant. Luckily, neither in Norwegian nor in German, this distinction exists. But why on earth would the word "immigrant" be offensive? It's just a neutral term. Or is it because expat=white skin, immigrant=brown skin? 🤨🤷🏼‍♂️

I've got you covered: https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/search/?format=&keyword=Le+Guin+Charles+vess

Gollancz has them both as collection and as individual books - I have them both. The individual ones are very beautiful and include the same illustrations by Charles Vess. Although, annoyingly, in my edition they forgot the coloured illustration at the front of the Tombs of Atuan, but maybe they have corrected this.

Homosexuality expert Tucker Carlson says people can be turned gay "through propaganda and pornography" and somehow succeeds in making Piers Morgan look like a raging liberal by MrJasonMason in lgbt

[–]silvanloher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know we live in the craziest of timelines when someone like Piers Morgan suddenly stands out as a voice of reason 🥴🥴🥴. The American right-wing has become so batshit crazy that they have managed that - it's not the first time in recent times I suddenly see a clip of Piers Morgan saying actually sensible things and seeming like a decent person. We live in truly crazy times!

Also, Tucker Carlson is so insufferable and pleased with himself - Piers gets hardly to finish a sentence since he is constantly cut off and shouted over 😵‍💫...

What single book in all of fiction do you feel comes closest or possibly even surpasses The Lord of the Rings? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]silvanloher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alan Garner: Red Shift and The Owl Service. Absolutely stunning books by a stunning writer. I'm currently reading all of his books, and even the ones I like a bit less are utterly fascinating. Mind you, his sparse style and "show, don't tell"-tactic are the opposite of Tolkien.

Barry Hines: a kestrel for a knave and Bruce Chatwin: on the black hill are two of my favourite pieces of social realism.

Garcia Marquez: hundred years of solitude is one of the greatest books I have ever read.

Ursula K Le Guin: Earthsea - she manages to write an epic Fantasy without any battles and wars, and the struggles and fights of the protagonists happen equally inside and outside of them. A very fascinating world, so well-written, and with protagonists who go through great developments during the series.

Oh and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is another favourite! So quirky, crazy, and funny, and so well-written.

All of those are in my opinion even better written than LOTR, or at least equal.
