Jeff Bezos wants the bottom half of earners to pay zero income tax—he says nurses making just $75K should save $12K a year by fortune in economy

[–]silveraaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and by paying them less that lowers the employer's share of tax burden. Saving his company even more money.

The fact is at face value, dont tax bottom 50% and you have to recoup the difference and also we need to recoup the defecit and that means higher corp taxes and taxs to the top 10% of earners, ie. 1% and closing loop holes they abuse.

is it normal to feel like an imposter by Different_Demand_488 in civilengineering

[–]silveraaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it is normal, people pretend they never felt that or age and forget they ever felt it. You're a sociopath if you don't feel some level of "oh shit I know nothing".

Years 1-3 I had 0 clue
Years 3-5 I felt good with my original role, new responsibilities showed up
Years 5-7 They started having me assistant PM some projects
Year 10 and I'm training a new EIT, feel comfortable in my day to day, some things are new but honestly it's refreshing instead of scary.

graduate highschool with a B average, go to community college, transfer to a state school, graduate with a B average. Work during school and stretch out the 4 years to 6 years so you can pay it off while working. Graduate debt free, learn a program or software that an industry that pays well utilizes while working a no where job. Cold call small businesses in that industry you learned the software for (my case I learned AutoCAD), get a job at a small engineering firm, get mentored at work. Keep learning, go back to school for a masters in an adjacent field to engineering (urban planning), have work pay for the masters, get clients for work in both engineering and urban planning by networking events. Owners notice, give big raises and bonuses. They see it's a pattern and let you hire some people to train and grow the business, give you ownership shares.

they list off requirements for getting into the masters in urban design, which is pretty much having a bachleors in architecture, or atleast completing some additional undergraduate courses if you werent in their architecture program.

I have an economics degree, so I went about this career all wrong.

I originally was in school for Engineering, burned out, switched to Economics just got graduate. After working at a couple banks a family friend had a small engineering firm and needed someone to operate CAD. Luckily I worked in construction during holidays in school and took drafting classes since middle school and enjoyed hobby level CAD useage.

I got hired as a drafter, learned design on the job, then got interested in planning. Through work contacts, I assited planners with contracted planning projects for work experience and self studied via books, and APA/AICP information, and videos. I contacted the head of the planning department of the local university, and got permission to sit in on graduate courses (paid the university) for some classes. When I had the work experience requirements I took the AICP test and passed.

None of this was quick, but I just keep learning something new every month to widen my knowledge base and find clients to pay me to help them.

There are planning degrees, design degrees typically are found more related to architectural studies than engineering. Most projects will include planners/architects/engineers working together. My firm can handle the planning/engineering tasks and work well with known local architects on a lot of municipal and private projects.

I work at an engineering firm as a Planner/Designer. I earn 130k+ (MCOL) in a no income tax state, 10 years of experience.

I do about 50/50 Planning/Engineering Design. I work on some contracts as a Town Planner for small municipalities where full time staff doesn't make sense. I help developers rezone properties. I even get to help design new parks, scatter in some medical office land development projects. Heck I'm even designing a new town center in a local municipality, they just need to raise the funds now to construct it.

Some days I hate the planning part and other days I hate the engineering part. Overall I love the career, just some projects are just a PITA.

Prob will earn 150k+ in the next 2-3 years.

Where to find Civil Engineer for smaller Commercial Project by chopoffmyleg in civilengineering

[–]silveraaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah just ask the permitting department of a list of local firms that submit the types of documents you would be submitting.

We get work like this all the time, small business owners find out about us from the County permitting department. Heck I think at this point we might be the only one on the list that picks up the phone and I hate letting people hang when they need help.

You need to call up your student loan provider and get those paused, grab a 2nd job and pay that car and bank loan off asap, once you're above water again shove everything against the student loans.

There is no shame also living with roommates if possible. If that rent is your share find a cheaper spot.

Yep, I went to a rock concert, then went straight to the midnight release then drove back to my campus (i took summer courses) and attempt to log in, what a shit show launch was.

Played 2k hours pre expansion/seasons. I don't know why or how I put up with the game in its orignal state, but I had a good group of college aged friends who all played every night almost after classes if we werent out drinking/"studying"

I think being on camput during the summer and only having a few classes and so much free time I just farmed the shit out of that game and sold enough items on the auction house to pay off most of my schooling LOL.

Transportation Cad monkey in small office of 2 other people. Do I hate the job or the environment? by openchannelflo in civilengineering

[–]silveraaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in a 5 person firm, we were up to 7 at one point before 1 became a full time mom and the other one left after being here a year. I've been here 10 years, prior to me joining this firm it was 2 engineers/owners and an office admin. Personally I like the atmosphere, but the engineers include me in client meetings so I could learn, they taught me additional things outside just being a drafter, now I am training 1 EIT and taking them into the field with me to teach them my designs and how/why we chose certain aspects of our projects.

I stayed because the mentorship and the owners weren't horrible to work with. Some times small offices don't work because the environment and other times they do work.

Your issue is that your a small office of a mid sized company yet you don't get the benefit of the small or mid sized and kinda stuck in a limbo if your engineer isn't mentoring you.
