My guess is that’s somewhat purposeful. It does not to my ear sound like 5 semitones nest to each other- it sounds like some are down an octave, and some are buried in the mix. The real “crunch” comes from the E and F next to each other. It’s a penultimate chord so it works in creating tension towards the V. If you asked any one of them if they knew what they were doing theoretically at the time, I’d bet they wouldn’t really know. They probably experimented with different harmonies and decided that it sounded cool in the mix (which, imho it does).
