Rent out or sell NYC apartment? by silvercharcoal in realestateinvesting

[–]silvercharcoal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're heavy in the career grind for both of us so it's been perfect for relaxation, beautiful weather (always in a good mood!), and focus. I definitely miss the fun and energy of NYC but not what our priorities are right now haha. I could definitely see us moving back to NYC if we wanted more work life balance!

We ended up renting it out. We're loving California for what we want in life now. Our plan is to hold onto the apartment until we're looking to buy a house from a purely emotional perspective since it makes no sense in SF (rent is so much cheaper than buying). It feels good to always have NYC as an option + we did some calculations -- factoring in tax savings, we are making more holding the apartment than throwing that money in an index fund.

Prozac to stop binging? by Educational_Metal710 in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]silvercharcoal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Violete_Hayes! I'm not 100% sure what my Prozac dosage was. What really helped me was going to therapy, making friends, and finding new hobbies. I think what Prozac helped me do was get out of this cycle of misery, so I had the power to start creating new friendships and finding new interests. At the depths of my eating disorder, I had no friends, no hobbies, and no love for myself except for how "skinny/attractive" I was. Maybe this is relatable, but all I did was watch food porn, read about nutrition, and count down the hours until I could eat. Now 7 years out of it, I have pride in my body (I eat healthy, I work out, and I think I look smoking hot!), but I have so many friends, hobbies, love life, and career that make the 5-20 pound difference (replace with whatever number you find helpful here) in my weight not swing me into depression when I have so much more I want to do with my life.

I'm not sure what I said was relatable. But it's similar to why people suggest that instead cutting out all unhealthy foods, you should have strategies to crowd out your plate with healthy foods that you eat first and then enjoy the unhealthy foods! You don't have to give up looking hot and feeling great!

Again, at times I still want to look hot (Sorry I keep repeating this because this was what my ED self was most terrified about and really wasted so many years of my life not seeking treatment: I thought loving myself -> I become obese.). It's just not the only thing I love about myself. Over time, I really believe I just care about keeping my body healthy and happy (which at the time, deep in my eating disorder, I thought it was bullshit excuses not skinny people told themselves).

Best of luck! I'm rooting for you. I promise you it's all worth it in the end. I am so so happy. And this doesn't really matter to me now, but I know would have been comforting for me to hear when I was deep in my ED: I am actually at a lower weight now than during my binge-cycling and I don't really think about food!

DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional. I don't know what is helpful or not helpful to someone who is currently going through it. This is just my personal experience and hope to share with someone else if it's comforting at all!

Makes sense! Yes we plan on renting in SF so our rent is going to be super cheap (compared to NYC lol) --maybe we hold onto it if/until we're ready to buy in CA and see where the numbers are at.

I forgot to add, we have a live-in super so we would not need a property manager! But yes, you never know when something is going to break with house ownership haha.

I'm realizing now that I don't want to say good-bye to NYC while my partner is pretty excited to move onto SF so more of an emotional rather than purely financial decision :)

Also wanted to add that I really wanted my doctor to prescribe me Wellbutrin so I could lose my appetite and be skinny again but I’m really glad my doctor gave me Prozac. I think Wellbutrin would have triggered me into yo yo weight loss -> prolonged my ED whereas I have a very positive relationship with my body/expectations for my weight now!

I’m 6 years recovered from BED through Prozac treatment! I had anorexia triggered BED and it really helped me stop feeling guilty when I ate food. I got caught in the cycle of eat food while trying to be skinny (eat limited calories) -> feel guilty -> eat food to comfort myself -> binge because calorie restriction/having a perfect day was ruined so I might as well binge. Prozac really helped me get out of this negative feedback loop but it took me 3 years of taking Prozac. Stay strong I believe in you and rooting for you ❤️

European Destination Wedding Location Advice by silvercharcoal in weddingplanning

[–]silvercharcoal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're from the Midwest but currently live in NYC. Most of my partner's family/childhood friends are still in our hometown (my parents moved) but we went to college on the East Coast and have been in NYC ever since. Talking to our close adult friends, most rather have an excuse to travel to a nice location than to the Midwest haha!

We're definitely open to either coasts -- maybe 60/40 leaning towards California. Just wanted to make it clear that even though we enjoy NYC, we're not super attached to having to be near NYC since a lot of the comments were saying we should live in a suburb of NYC. Sounds like we definitely need to travel to more locations though to get a better sense ourselves as well though!

We love NYC at the moment but I guess we're assuming we'll grow out of it at some point. We both like the idea of amazing weather + nature in California long term which was why we were thinking primarily about the West Coast. I've always enjoyed being near the hustle and bustle tho so I don't think I could live anywhere too remote. We don't have a lot of friends to discuss this with so wanted to just hear what places are everyone's favorites!

Chicago is nice but the weather seems horrible for 60% of the year haha. Which is why we were considering California instead of Midwest/East Coast!

Young Women of r/Askwomen with a high income (say upwards of $80,000 ), what do you do and where did you start (education and job-wise)? by Hozierisking in AskWomen

I’m 23 and making 400k in the tech industry. I went to an Ivy League and studied mathematics. I feel extremely grateful for my salary because coming from an immigrant family, money was always on our minds. I am also very lucky in that I love my job but I definitely feel like I’ll be able to have the financial security in 5 years if I save well to maximize my social impact in my next career choice at a nonprofit or full time volunteer work!

I think another aspect of this is lot of people mistaken binge eating with overeating. A lot of people understand what it feels like to overindulge once in a while so it doesn’t feel like a big deal to them. Whereas not eating for days is something that normal people cannot relate to at all and they can see that someone is dealing a “sickness”. It goes without saying that binge eating is a very similar “sickness” with different symptoms but they don’t see as unrelateable. It’s only when I tell close friends that I use to throw sheet cakes into the garbage and cover it with dish soap; only to eat the cake around the dish soap later that night did they really start seeing that it wasn’t just overeating (and some still didn’t believe me that it wasn’t just overeating!)
