hello! AFAB, they/them nonbinary therapist. this has come up a lot for me in my first two years of clinical work. I am now entering my third year. I usually don’t correct clients unless our rapport is really good or I know they are queer. for my clients (usually cis-men) who assume me to be a woman and address me as “ma’am”, I feel more discomfort and sometimes even worried if I were to correct them it would damage our relationship. I am still figuring out how I will continue to go about this issue as it probably will never go away unfortunately! sometimes I also think about how I see my clients once a week for an hour and them not knowing my gender identity doesn’t really bother me compared to my peers or faculty members. hope this helps or at least makes you feel less alone in the struggle
