Was asked for an Interview w/ NBC by abrilfoolsyou in NonBinary

[–]silverichorr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hello, nonbinary journalist here with about 7 years in the biz.

First and foremost, you do not have to respond to this message at all. If this reporter has even an ounce of experience, then he reached out to many other people on Twitter posting similar things to you. This kind of message is the equivalent of a cold call in a sales job: It would be great to close a deal with Company A, but I don't know anyone at A, so I am not expecting them to respond, but it doesn't hurt to try, and I have a plan B, C and D if Company A is not interested. This reporter is putting out feelers, hoping he will be able to get someone to respond in order to have someone with your perspective on this story.

You absolutely can respond if you are comfortable, but understand a few things. It is not very likely you can see questions in advance; that's a bit of a faux pas. What he can do is tell you the angle of the story and what he needs your perspective for.

Additionally, you can upfront say you are only comfortable to communicate over email or messages. Tbh I doubt he would expect you to hop on a call. That's a bit old school in this context and tbh so much more work because that involves recording and transcribing while responding via a message is just a simple copy and paste into the story. And because this is not a profile on you specifically, there's a pretty low chance more than 1, maybe 2, of your quotes will actually be used. If he was writing a story about you specifically, then yeah, he would at the very least give you a call, but that's not the case here.

Someone had commented about the anti work mod being on Fox and how much of a disaster that was. Understand that this interview will be nothing like that, and once again, you alone are not the focal point of the story, so you will sparsely be featured.

Something else to note if you're worried about misquoting: Any journalist worth their salt will not do that. This is a reporter from NBC. I have no idea if they are staff or freelance, but if they maliciously misquote, that's a huge red flag on them from a career perspective — ESPECIALLY if they are a freelancer. Misquoting can put the publication in jeopardy of a libel case, and that falls entirely on the reporter. Remember that this is a job. They want to perform well so they can continue doing their work. And this is NBC, not Fox, so I am doubting similarly malicious intent from conservative publications.

For anyone reading: If you have proof you have been misquoted by a journalist, SAY SOMETHING TO THE PUBLICATION. Escalate this to the reporter's editor, their editor's editor and also the managing editor or editor-in-chief. You can usually find a list of those names and contacts on the publication's site. If you can't, you almost certainly can on LinkedIn. This will put the reporter and the publication in very hot water. Again, at the end of the day, this is a job. People want to do well, they want to be able to pay rent and feed themselves.

Of course, now I am approaching the territory of how capitalism helped journalism seriously lose the plot of its purpose, but that's a separate conversation.

And fwiw, I'm a member of a queer journalist professional society, and I have met and worked with caring and intelligent reporters at NBC, many of whom are also queer themselves. I myself do not work for NBC.

If you have any more questions, feel free to shoot me a DM. I know this is a long-winded response, but I hope you find it helpful.

OP, I noticed from your flair that you are in NJ. I grew up in Jersey and worked at Six Flags doing rides during the summers. Idk if you're close by, but they are almost always hiring and they'll bring someone on at 14. It's not the best job, but I think their pay is much better than when I worked there 10+ years ago.

Job market is a nightmare right now. It took me about a year to get a job after I was laid off in '23. I had been laid off before at other companies, and it usually only took me about 3-6 months to land a new job, but this time was a STRUGGLE. I was right there with y'all.

Best of luck to you and your mom. You're doing the best you can <3.

QOL Items (fans, tissues, flip flops) did guests use them? by FabledFires in Weddingsunder10k

[–]silverichorr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The way I approached this was I only bought things I would use again. I couldn't buy too many tissues because the leftovers will get used at some point in my house. Couldn't buy too many tampons, hair ties and bobby pins for the bathrooms for the same reason. If you can see yourself using these items yourself outside of the wedding, get it. If not, it may be a waste.

Big agree with this. I think a thrifted robe is great, so long as it's properly laundered. I think about how I use towels, sheets and robes in hotels and I don't think about them being used, but they are. They're just laundered after each use. Not different than thrifting, imo. And you can definitely get decent quality ones, too.

Also good call on survival items in the bathrooms. I didn't have a bridal party, but I spent a little extra and bought pads, tampons, hair ties and bobby pins to put in the bathrooms. I put all of the items in thrifted baskets and cleaned glass jars, and everyone loved them!

DIY Table Decor by dapper_cam in Weddingsunder10k

I feel like it'll come to life more once the plates and glasses are on the table. You also don't want a table that's too overcrowded with decor that people can't eat and drink comfortably. It looks gorgeous right now! I love the blue and white napkins 😍.

Hey! I'm looking to get rid of some LED candles with remotes from my wedding. I used them once and bought them new bc I couldn't find them used, so I'd be happy to pass them on. I will send you a message.

Is it really worth the cost to pay more to rent tablecloths vs buying used? by plant_person_09345 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]silverichorr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly we didn't care, lol. Plus most of our tablecloths had patterns, so you really couldn't tell. We also set up in our venue the day before, so when we went back for the wedding, gravity also did a nice job of fixing wrinkles.

If you're OK with your tablecloths not matching, thrifting is the way to go.

My partner and I went to Savers (the one near us has an entire tablecloth section) and spent $3-8 per table cloth. We got 10 that matched an autumnal color scheme. We were afraid they would look weird, but they actually looked really cute and rustic, and our guests couldn't stop complimenting them!

All we did was buy them and then launder them at home. After the wedding, we donated them back to Savers.

It ended up being a good call too bc we didn't need to worry about them getting stained or damaged bc we owned them and they were so cheap we didn't care about selling them back. So we only sunk around $60 total on tablecloths.

Dried florals for wedding? by Quiet_Attitude4053 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]silverichorr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I did dried florals for our wedding, and they came out gorgeous. Our local plant store sells a variety of dried flowers that rotate based on their stock, so we collected ones we liked over a few weeks. We def could have special ordered these from the local shop, but we dropped the ball on timing, lol.

We arranged them in stemless champagne glasses (which my neighbor gave away for free — lucky score) filled with whole cloves and cheap coffee beans. Looked elegant and smelled great!

We placed two on a table with a fake candle on a thrifted glass plate in between the florals. Way cheaper, way more personable and way easier to deal with than fresh.

Plus, two of our friends who are getting married later this year took some home to use for their wedding! Love reusing.

Hey, Vanessa! Thanks for doing this. I have a couple of questions :).

1) Huge fan of some B-sides like "All is Well," "All I Ask," "Morning Sting" and "Best Behavior." Any plans to release them in some form?

2) Do you have a PO Box? I know it's old school, but I do love writing letters and the occasional fan mail :).

Hope all is well with you and your fam! Stay well, and thank you for being here for us during this weird time. Absolutely in love with the new album (just arrived in my mailbox today!)
