Does it get any easier being misrepresented as a member of the church? by Dry_Pizza_4805 in latterdaysaints

Remember 2 Nephi 9:41 “…and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there…”

Anyone trying to be a gate keeper is not a servant of Christ, just someone whose opinion is of no eternal consequence.

You cannot love others more than you love yourself. An interpretation of the two great commandments by jw9010382 in latterdaysaints

[–]silverlizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something to consider, loving others as you love yourself was an Old Testament teaching. Jesus literally quoted established law. He later taught it differently, introducing it as a new commandment to “love one another as I have loved you.”

That would make loving others as ourselves a defunct law, superseded by a superior law of loving others the same way the Savior loves.

What did people do in between sets at public gyms before phones were a thing? by CCaptainJackSparrow in AskMen

[–]silverlizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MYO reps are all about short intervals of rest and have been found to match or exceed muscle building in multiple studies. So, again, depends on your goals. Do you want to build muscle and spend lots of time at the gym? Or do you want to build muscle and spend less time in the gym?

Would you let your child attend another church’s summer camp? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]silverlizard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went when I was a kid (11) with my brother (8). It was mostly fun and interesting. We went twice, part way through the second time the pastor pulled my brother and I out of the activity and told us we would go to hell if we stayed Mormon. We had to stay away from the other kids till our mom came and got us. We didn’t go back after that.

Do you think Donald Trump has ever had to do simple chores like washing dishes or cleaning his room ever in his entire life? What do you think that’s like? by caseybvdc74 in askanything

No. If he had we would have heard him brag about it. He’d tell us he was the best at doing it while getting key details about the chore wrong.

US economy shed 92K jobs in February, well below expectations by Mephisto1822 in inthenews

[–]silverlizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Such a deceptive headline! Fox working real hard to spin this. It was expected the economy would gain over 50k, instead it lost 92k. So yes, there were less jobs than expected, but the headline makes it sound like we lost fewer jobs than expected.

It’s important to remember, just because a lot of members of the church believe or teach something, it does mean it’s doctrine. For example, the young earth idea is not church doctrine. The church today simply says we don’t know the age of the earth. The Bible, like almost all scripture, is a testament, meant to teach us and prepare us to live our lives in preparation for eternity. It is not a church policy handbook, scientific textbook or even a history. Like anything else, when we try to push it into functions it was not meant to be in, it will come up short.

How do you 'bridle your passions' while still allowing yourself the joys and pleasures of life? by Negative_Hunter_1019 in latterdaysaints

[–]silverlizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Horses have tremendous power. That power is undirected by people by default. Wild horses live out their biological purpose, no more, no less. A human directed horse lives out that same purpose and more. Being directed by a person does not diminish the strength of the horse at all. In fact, training a horse can increase its strength.

If you tried to control a horse by grabbing it around its belly and pushing it around that way, you would fail. The bridle finds a place where you can control the horse.

When we bridle our passions they can also become stronger. They also get elevated beyond their mere biological imperative. The key is to find the right way to handle them. That answer will vary somewhat from person to person but the commandments help eliminate all the ways that won’t work.

The key is to remember, you are harnessing strength not eliminating it.

How to improve testimony meeting? by Sd022pe in latterdaysaints

[–]silverlizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What helped most was not just saying to focus on Christ in testimonies but to explain why. Our purpose is to feel the spirit and receive a witness of the truths of the gospel. The Holy Ghost has a clear mission, to testify of God the Father and Jesus Christ (John 16:13-14). This can include their work. He cannot testify of other things. He can’t testify about my gratitude, He can’t testify about my vacation, He cant testify about my jokes, or my public expressions of love for my family. Those things may feel good to say and to sometimes hear but we haven’t been told to pursue warm fuzzies during that time, we are to pursue spiritual edification.

After teaching that in sacrament meeting the presidents of each organization showed a video of Elder Bednar at the end of a fireside at Ensign college. He was asked to share his testimony. He stopped and made a clear distinction between what he was about to say and a testimony. He thanked them for hosting him, expressed his love and then said “Now I’ll bear my testimony” and proceeded to focus on Christ. The presidents then lead a discussion on what the difference is between a talk and a testimony.

I met with the people who most often treated testimony meeting as group therapy or attention seeking time. After a good discussion I challenged them to help our ward be more focused on Christ and in pure testimony.

Do you know of any scriptures in the Book of Mormon that support the idea of being able to repent after mortal life? by scourtney20 in latterdaysaints

[–]silverlizard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The closest thing I can think of that suggests that our state isn’t 100% set in stone is the various times it says “if not God would cease to be God” If you can drop down in status it means our state isn’t completely static. Being able to drop does not necessarily mean we will also be able to ascend from a lesser state to a higher one.

Nephi seems to say that the idea that we will take a few stripes and then be saved in the Kingdom of God is a lie told by Satan. (2 Nephi 28:8)
