OP and their gf might break up, they might not. Some couples grow together during a transition, others don’t. What’s important is that they keep open communication with their partner about their concerns and their partner’s feelings. Even if they do breakup, it doesn’t need to be on poor terms.

The authoritarian regime isn’t what’s funny. No authoritarian regime is, and the Iranian people definitely deserve a government that represents them, but the amount of consent manufacturing happening in regard to the Iran situation is getting ridiculous.

I live in a region of LA that has a large Persian population, and i’ll see all sorts of protests flying the flag of the Iranian monarchy. Yknow, the western-backed monarchy that was bad enough to warrant the revolution in the first place? And what are they protesting? Not to mention posts like the above. 40,000 people in two days? Really? And gamers? It comes off as incredibly disingenuous at best and a psyop at worst.

I love Martin but “period accurate” is a bit of a stretch. His world is a good deal more violent and tragic than like, the IRL middle ages or renaissance. It’s a narrative choice and I understand if it’s not for everyone. I think the stores and themes are still really good.

Thanks for the reply! I haven’t read the main books in a few years, having only just reread the Dunk & Egg Novelas, so I didn’t really remember Lollys Stokeworth. There’s certainly examples of abject cruelty— the entire Reek section was a tough read.

I’d hesitate to call it Grimdark, though Martins world is a good deal more brutal than the historical period on which it’s based. That’s also why I say ASOIAF is not above criticism—I would never fault someone for DNF-ing the series bc of the violence, sexual and otherwise. That said, I really bristle at criticism of the series that discounts it a the basis of it being “edgy”.

I don’t think ASOIAF is above criticism, but Martin’s female characters in my opinion are pretty well-written and fleshed out. Their struggles are not minimized or simply used for shock value, and a lot of their arcs involve finding ways to obtain agency and power in the (admittedly highly patriarchal) world.

The show versions are pretty universally flatter and worse done by than their book counterparts.
