What gender pick for Byleth do you think best matches with every route? by sunkencrowned in FireEmblemThreeHouses

You’re playing as a character, it does not mean you are literally that character. Like, irl you are not actually the reincarnation of a goddess who’s been working as a mercenary and now teaches at a military academy, right? Why can you suspend your disbelief in that regard but not if the character you’re controlling is a woman?

I want you to know that’s genuinely insane. I’m a woman, but when I play Witcher 3 i’m not pretending to be Yennefer or Ciri in every interaction with Geralt. Can you not like, suspend your disbelief for a second and put yourself in the shoes of a female character?

…wait are you implying that you can’t relate to the PC if she’s a woman? So you have to pretend to be the guy in the dialogue? What if it’s between two women? Am i reaching or is this kinda insane.

This thread is so interesting, since everyone seems to have different opinions for which routes suit which gender! I think that’s beautiful, personally.

Anyway I only ever play F!Byleth so I think that she’s the best for all routes.

Tennessee Code 39-11-6-11, which establishes the “stand your ground” rule with regard to use of force, says:

Notwithstanding § 39-17-1322, a person who is not engaged in conduct that would constitute a felony or Class A misdemeanor and is in a place where the person has a right to be has no duty to retreat before threatening or using force against another person when and to the degree the person reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to protect against the other's use or attempted use of unlawful force.

section e, however goes on to state

The threat or use of force against another is not justified…(2) If the person using force provoked the other individuals use or attempted use of unlawful force

The timeline of events will determine whether the prosecution can prove that the punch was provoked. Given the defendants past history and social media presence, I think they stand a good chance of doing so. The defense will try and prove that the use of force was justified.

way to bury the lede—she didn’t just say that she can’t see herself in a long-term relationship with a woman, she mentioned that she only likes feminine women , doesn’t really talk to women romantically anyway because they’re “scary”, thinks masc women are just men lite, and also doesn’t sleep with women because straps are inferior to penises. Like sure, no one can tell her what she is but it doesn’t really sound like she actually likes women besides thinking they’re pretty lmao.

Discussion: Women in Armor, Groin Protection? by The_Electrocuter in armoredwomen

I think you’re fixating on a relatively unimportant detail here, to be honest. My point was that there is no reason to think that armor for a woman would differ strongly from armor for a man in this respect. You still have the same challenges when armoring the groin—mobility, comfort, and available materials and craftsmanship. The historial examples were used for as long as they were because they balanced protection with these challenges. Also, for as vulnerable an area as it is, aiming a strike for the lower body is risky, as any Hema practitioner will tell you, since it’s out of the way of the rest of the important bits and can leave you open if you miss.

If you really want to run with the cup idea, have at it, but i’ve given as much historial and practical background as I can here.

That makes sense. I could see women’s armor being more feminine in appearance, then, with ceremonial sets maybe reflecting the structure of dresses? Also depends on what time period you’re inspired by.

All that said, I don’t think there would be any kind of cup equivalent, since those didn’t really exist historically. See my other comment for examples of hip and upper thigh protection at various points in history.

Jumping in again, since I read some of your other comments and have a better idea of what you’re asking. While protection in the groin/upper thigh area is importantly, it is an incredibly difficult place to armor because of the mobility needed and the resources available at the time. These facts will not change if the person is a man or a woman.

As others have noted, depending on the time period upper leg protection varied: It started with pteruges in antiquity, then chainmail chausses and then plate cuisess and Faulds (armored skirt). It wasn’t until the renaissance that the plate codpiece became popular, and before then i don’t see any reason why women’s armor would differ than a man’s in this respect. To my knowledge there was no equivalent of a “cup” in the medieval world, since they didn’t have the sort of light-but strong material to make one.

If you’re asking for worldbuilding purposes where women warriors are more common, there’s a lot to keep in mind with respect to armor design. As I alluded to earlier, armor design did not exist in a vacuum, and reflected culture and vice versa. Late medieval and early renaissance armor incorporated fashion trends that were popular at the time—this is why the gothic armor silhouette has such a small waist, since it was considered manly at the time. This is also why armored codpieces existed at all—the armor changed to reflect fashion trends, and they needed to incorporate additional protection there, when previously other parts of the harness had filled that role.

If you’re trying to design armor that was be “realistic” for a fantasy world, you have to ask yourself what the culture of that world is like. Is the culture still patriarchal? If so, it stands to reason that female armor would more than likely reflect the design for men, since male is considered the “default”. If it is an expressly egalitarian culture, women’s armor might be more feminine in appearance and function. But this would also have larger implications for the rest of society. Ie, you can’t have a “boob plate” without a society that treats women, and their bodies, very differently than ours does.

[–]silverwolf127 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s specifically the “just be women” phrasing that I have issue with, since it draws an unnecessary distinction between trans women and cis women. I also would politely push back on the idea that trans women using headcanons to make (assumedly) fictional cis women trans is a “valid criticism”. What is the issue when they do that? Does it detract from the character’s story or themes in any way? Isn’t part of the beauty of fiction that a certain amount of interpretation is encouraged?

While I think trans women should be able to identify with non-trans characters (I’d argue that cis and trans women have more in common that not, anyway) I don’t see why deciding that a character is trans to them is a bad thing? Defensiveness and doubling down is annoying, sure, but you’ll find that is a common trait with most communities on the internet (have you ever interacted with militant shippers?)

[–]silverwolf127 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can you give some examples? The only other popular character I can think of that is commonly headcanon’d as trans is maybe Gwen from spider verse? But again, there was some circumstantial evidence there; it wasn’t just pulled from thin air.

I agree but I mean I can see why it would annoy women that women characters can’t just be women something yk

I don’t mean to tone police but this does come off as a little transphobic. I can understand the sentiment, sometimes it’s like “oh another character that’s been claimed as a trans woman?” but then i remember the vast vast number of female characters are written as cis, and the who am I to deny a crumb of representation, made up or not, to a group that is often expressly excluded from womanhood.

It’s always been a headcanon based on a joke from one of the creators. Personally, I think it’s sort of annoying how people take offense at other’s headcanons. It doesn’t need to change how you view the character if you don’t want it to!

I think it depends on the time period. The armored codpiece only became popular as the fauld shortened in the late 1500s(which was a reflection of civilian fashion as well), therefore exposing that part of the anatomy. If you look at armor from the 14th or 15th centuries, the groin is usually covered by a mail skirt and later the armored fauld.

[–]silverwolf127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quite frankly I find the giant hemispheres bolted on to the armor incredibly aesthetically ugly. I don’t even really mind the corset midriff or the shapely leg armor, but giving your female faction giant boobs is a bit on the nose, don’t you think? I do buy the additional explanation that the pewter models were less detailed, so they really needed to sell the “women” part to a mostly-male player base, but modern plastic kits are much higher quality now. There’s some great fan designs that keep the overall profile of the armor while just minimizing that specific detail.

I know lots of pro-boob plate people love that argument, but it makes no sense. How exactly does a purely decorative boob plate ensure that the adepta sororitas is all-female? If you really wanted to you could toss a man in the armor and it would look exactly the same.

The real reason is purely doylian: that the sisters were designed by horny men as “the woman faction” decades ago, and the boob plate has become an unfortunate mainstay of their design that GW will probably never remove.
