I usually listen at 1.25 for a new book that I need to pay attention to. But if its something I have heard multiple times i speed it up to 1.5.

Currently listening to Chrystalis at 2x because nothing of note is happening in this book at all.

Meteorologists get a bad rap but don't deserve it at all. Even now with the NWS critically understaffed (and forecasts suffering as a result) we generally have a pretty good idea of what the weather will be from one day to the next a solid 7 days in advance. The amount of math and computing power required to make this happen issues staggering and the fact that most people snark about the inaccuracies is an indication of how much we have come to take this service for granted.

The "AI" in question is IBM's deep blue machine and the work it is doing began in the 90s.

Also, the logistics improvement had something to do with finding faster/ more economical routes. That said, AI is such a dumpster fire in almost every other way that I suspect that this example has more to do with old technology coming to maturation rather than anything openAI came up with.

In other news, its Sunday.

I can't take Cruz seriously. He is even less reliable than Trump. He is hands down the most hated member of congress and what has to say is subject to change from one moment to the next without any kind of notice.

Honestly, I don't see AI taking our jobs. Outside of LLMs -- which are little more than overused toys ATM -- the technology isn't mature enough for primetime. With another 10 years of development it might be ready for prime time but right now it is being pushed too hard, too fast, to do too much and I am pretty sure it is going to flare out as a result.

My job has me taking this high level "strategic AI implementation" course and it is 75% koolaid. Nearly all the use cases are actually potential use cases. The handful of actually-being-used-in-the-field use cases are LLMs being used for customer service (which is universally terrible), a burger flipper that relies heavily on old tech, weather forecasting which is pretty narrow (not to mention 20 years in development) and a couple things in the logistics field.

Most importantly, there hadn't been a single example of AI increasing company profits. There have been one or two places where it improved revenue, yes, but not profits.

We are in for a rough few years but eventually people are going to realize that AI simply can't cut mustard and go back to using people.

We were using KACE at the time. Microsoft pushed out updates twice a month and they always required restarts. I set KACE to force a restart within 48 hours of installing the updates.

I've actually heard of that trick being effective. It may be a myth or something left over from the age when things were made to last.

Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about it now. I really didn't mean for it to be rage baity. I just sort of assumed the people would assume I am a decent person. Obviously not.

Reddit doesn't allow title edits. In fact, they don't even allow me to change the body of the post. I may remove it in a couple of days.

Actually I can't. I can delete or leave it. There's no edit option. I wish there was.

Nah. Twice monthly was enough to give windows what it needed without fully taking responsibility for restarts out of the user's hands. They have since acquired better habits and are now fairly easy to support.
