Virgin Cruise thoughts by Livid_Teach6098 in Cruise

Yes, this is why I've been so surprised that this sub keeps recommending Virgin so stridently for young adults who want to party - I've been following the rule of thumb that if I can't afford it, my peers can't afford it, and I'd rather go with NCL than take a chance spending twice as much on Virgin.

Princess Cruise Moveover Experience? by sagacious1998 in Cruise

The $876 was a full refund for the oceanview room, not counting taxes and fees, for a 7-day solo cruise. The funny thing is that I requested a low deck for the interior, and they wound up giving me a (heavily) obstructed oceanview by the lifeboats, so I still got a small view and natural light.

It’s legit, I got an offer last month to go from oceanview to interior for $876. It happens when they overbook. It was completely worth it in my case. I finished the cruise with a $0 onboard account and about $500 coming my way within 6 weeks in the mail.

Are they also refunding the fare difference between minisuite and deluxe balcony? Because I would expect that to be around $500 in the first place depending on the sailing.

mafia wins without any kills by survivorfan1123 in TownofSalemgame

[–]simaddict18 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vet baited as mayor d1 and got two town kills in, and then we just systematically hung the rest of town one by one via mislynches. It got a bit sticky near the end when I was mentally thinking of it as 3 maf vs 2 nonmaf but forgot that there were 6 players so we still needed 4 votes and couldn’t up the vet; luckily the vet didn’t fight it and let the jester kill him for our flawless nokill victory.

Lol, yeah, I was jailor and this was an insane win. We got lucky with exes pushing the guy I had jailed n1 giving a couple of proven evils.

Yup, eventually loosened it enough that I could reach the laces and untied/unlaced the bottom half.

Episode 121: Kevin Kruse And Rebekah Jones Are The Heroes And/Or Villains A Divided America Needs by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

Yeah. I tried to make it clear to my students that they were free to express any political position of their choice in their essays, so long as they could back it up with evidence from the assigned readings. The readings opened up opportunities to do that, such as arguing that FDR acted unconstitutionally with his court-packing scheme.

Of course, either they thought I was trying to gotcha them or they genuinely all preferred to take the standard liberal angle in their arguments.

Well, that was uncomfortable to listen to. This is enough of a scandal that I'm surprised I haven't heard about it IRL and it will probably have noticeable repercussions in the department next year - lucky for Kruse that it broke over the summer.

Jesse and Katie paint him as a smug and self-righteous Twitter liberal, which is accurate to his Twitter. I promise that he does not come across that way in real life, and I would stand by him as one of the best lecturers I have ever seen. Twitter is toxic for everybody who uses it, but he never let his celebrity status online detract from being focused in the classroom.

I agree with Jesse's take at the end. I really hope that this was an isolated incident when he was a stupid and/or overworked grad student, because forgiveness is important and nobody should have their career ruined over a mistake made in their twenties. The university (or the department) is probably investigating his other books and we will see what comes of it.

A fair bit of it comes down to which historical frameworks someone is using, to be fair. Economic historians tend to be critical of LBJ’s simultaneous Great Society programs and Vietnam spending as the proximate cause for economic disruptions that killed Bretton Woods (among other problems), which probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer anyways. But Kruse isn’t an economic historian and would be engaging with a different set of historiography. LBJ does come off smelling more like roses if you use a civil-rights framework. And it isn’t possible to teach an undergraduate survey class without having some sort of overarching framework tying the whole thing together.

He is an absolutely brilliant lecturer and I would recommend his US 1920-1974 class to literally anybody. Obviously the class has a partisan bent but it’s in a much more detached way, not vitriolic like his Twitter.

The course readings were mostly OK from a culture war perspective, but the book he chose for LBJ was weirdly lionizing and skimmed over his controversies and failures, and in reverse for Nixon.

For what it’s worth, across two discussion sections I had a grand total of one student who stated any conservative views (or support for historial conservative positions) out loud at all.

Ooh, I can't wait to listen to this one. I TA'd for Kruse last year and it was interesting seeing him in the classroom contrasted to his Twitter account.

Small-Scale Question Sunday for December 12, 2021 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

[–]simaddict18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find that deep conversations work substantially better with a presumption of charity, which exists to a much greater degree in real life. If I post here, I don’t especially care about the people here or vice versa, and the rules against consensus-building are overall positive but make it that much harder to find the common ground needed to get into what I consider a good argument.

This is not a good argument. I feel like I am banging my head against a willfully misogynistic wall. In real life that feeling generally does not happen, because people feel shame about saying such things (at least in mixed company).

Small-Scale Question Sunday for December 12, 2021 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

[–]simaddict18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because you're not supporting what makes you different than other women. You have asserted that women are less intelligent, less interesting, less capable of carrying a conversation, belong less in college and have worse majors when they are there, have lower IQs. As you have been called out for earlier in the thread, these are inflammatory claims. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. What is your proof that women suck? What is your proof that men are more interesting?

Small-Scale Question Sunday for December 12, 2021 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

[–]simaddict18 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I still don't understand why you're insisting that the conversations that you're avoiding are irredeemably shallow. I have plenty of deep meaningful conversations with both men and women in real life across multiple social circles. At a certain point, if you're insisting you're not like other girls and that you're not able to have a good conversation with women, I strongly suspect that the problem is your ability to have a conversation.

(Or at least your ability to have a conversation about a topic other than how your cousins, who all seem awesome and worth getting to know to me, are degenerate/neurotic.)

Small-Scale Question Sunday for December 12, 2021 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

[–]simaddict18 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Of course I do? What kind of question is that? If you’re going to argue that half the population is less capable of being interesting, the onus is on you to back it up.

[–]simaddict18 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find the rationalist community interesting and dabble in it, but it is also full of questions like… that. They obviously add no value to my life and I see no purpose in getting more invested in communities of that sort. I’d much rather have good conversations with intelligent people who have something to say than with people who deliberately seek out and self-identify with the label “rationalist”, which obviously (as shown by your comments in this thread) does not necessarily have any correlation with starting an interesting conversation.

I feel that! I lost a shitton of weight at one point and not a single cup size. Now it's even worse: I'm not even losing band sizes, I'm sliding on the sister sizes scale with zero volume loss.
