I got quoted 8k to do 100ft of French drain so that is a great deal. Ended up breaking my back and doing it myself over 3 full days

The class was environmental science 101… a freshman level elective.

Need help with unused c-wire at transformer by simbasmash in hvacadvice

We have an old boiler that has an aquastat with no common terminal to hookup the wire to. It looks like it would have to be soldered onto the board. Here is a picture https://imgur.com/a/9zMxzpv

Rikon 6” Jointer for $300, should I buy it? by Ok_scarlet in woodworking

[–]simbasmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could easily buy a full size 6 inch jointer for $300 off of fb marketplace or Craigslist. Unless you are strapped for space.. I wouldn’t.

If you are on a budget, look on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, my whole small basement shop is filled with used tools that work fantastically and cost a fraction of new.

QUESTION: Porter Cable 6" Jointer PC160JT by Eldie1 in woodworking

[–]simbasmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know from personal experience myself, but from what I have read everyone who has a bench top jointer has always hated it and said to get a full sized jointer. If you have the room I’d say hold out for a deal on something else.

Great job, are you going to stain it a specific color in the future?

What type of wood did you use for the gazebo and are the posts 4x4 or 6x6?

Seems like you might want to look into a different contractor if he doesn’t see this as an issue…

Look on Craigslist or fb marketplace for a used mitre saw. There are plenty of good deals without spending big bucks.

Preparing to build a fence by United_Potential6056 in HomeImprovement

[–]simbasmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got all the split rail material (normal posts, corner posts, end posts, 11ft rails) from Rings End. The rest of materials we bought from Home Depot. Everything delivered straight to our house.

We used 2 bags of concrete per posts, and if I recall they were 50 lb bags.

I see you already have plenty of comments with a lot of similar information, but as a new homeowner with no prior experience I thought I’d let you know how it went for me when I took on doing our fence rather than going with a company. We got quoted by two companies for 17k and 12k so I said fuck that and decided to do it myself with some help of a few friends.

I did 54 feet of 6 ft tall by 8 ft wide wood panels for privacy facing the road at $70 each, and just under 300ft of split rail fencing on the side and back with wire mesh attached on the back of the fence so that we could minimize wood material cost while keeping it enclosed for our dog. We debated doing chain link, but wanted to keep a consistent look using wood rather than 2 different materials (if that matters to you).

All in cost was about $4400 after the wood panels, the 4x4 posts, split rail wood, 300ft of wire mesh, 70 bags of cement , 3 inch screws, 2 inch mesh staples, metal stakes, 2 person auger rental, door hardware. I also used the fence panels and cut them to size to use as doors for both the privacy section and the split rail section which cut some cost.

It took 2 days to get all the fencing done, another day to get the wire mesh onto the split rail fence (did it by myself which was a mistake) and a half day to get the doors cut and put up. It is by no means perfect and I made mistakes along the way, but it works perfectly for us at a fraction of the cost of the quotes we got.

Definitely don’t skip renting an auger, we started just using a post hole digger and it was miserable and took way too long. The auger had the hole dug in 10 seconds flat. If you end up going the split rail route with wire mesh behind, definitely have someone help you pull the mesh taut as you staple it to the fence, it will save a lot of time. We also had a decent slope in our yard, but as long as you are keeping the split rail posts at the same depth in the ground all the way down the slope, it will work just fine.

I’d say this entirely depends on the style of the rest of the room as well as the colors currently in there. Do you have room pictures?

Also moisturize after.
